It worked for me too!

I had the same problem after upgrading to Mavericks. I called up the Apple store, and this was the fix that was given me:

* Go to Finder.

* On the Finder menu, click on "Go", then on "Go to Folder". A box should come up.

* On the box, type in "~/Library/Keychains/" and click on "Go". It should lead you to the Keychains folder where you will find three items: (1) a folder with a name mixed with letters and numbers, (2) login.keychain, and (3) metadata.keychain.

* Delete the folder with a name mixed with letters and numbers.

* Restart your computer. Check to see if the problem has been solved.

It worked for me. Hope it works for you too!

So far so good, time will tell but thanks in advance. Strangely, the apple store "Genii" were my next move. Thanks for short circuiting that option. :apple: Guru.

Many thanks, similarly to others, I created an account just to say THANKS !

There is but one thought left on this. After the procedure worked for me, I left the Finder window open, where I deleted the folder with a long name of characters and numbers. Upon re-start, the same finder window showed up AGAIN with the folder with characters and numbers in its name.

I guess, this folder is generated automatically and the original problem was caused by some uncontrolled changes in its contents. Let's hope, this won't happen again.

Reset iCloud keychain

I'm having the same problem, which started after my MBP battery died and I restarted it, and I've tried a lot of different things and neither of them are working. It looks like there must have been a 'Local Items.keychain' file that was deleted somehow.

But the system keeps nagging me for a password for it. I can't use Safari, iCloud etc. b/c apparently Local Items is where all those passwords were stored ...

In my case, after the first time I rebooted my MacBook Pro I kept getting these pop ups asking for the "Local Items" password and I couldn't get it right and therefore couldn't access to any app or webpage that had stored any of my passwords.

Apparently the error comes from the fact that the iCloud keychain needed to be verified by another of my iDevices, so what worked for me was:

1.- Resetting the iCloud keychain on my iPhone to gain control over it (Settings>iCloud>Keychain>On). The only reason I reset it, is because it hadn't been properly activated before, and perhaps that's why this whole mess happened in the first place.
2.- Asking for permission from my MBP's iCloud settings to access the iCloud keychain. This will lead to a pop up on the iPhone's screen asking for confirmation.
3.- That's all. Before this, If I checked the Keychain app on my MBP I had a 'Local Items' keychain, now it's been replaced by my iCloud keychain and everything works just fine.

This may not work for those who don't want to store passwords on iCloud though.

Just tried that and still getting the odd spurious pop up.

Mismatch iCloud keychain and local keychain?

I was suffering with this same problem, I followed these steps and everything returned to normality:

1.- I opened KeyChain app and run the FirstAid (from the KeyChain app Menu)with my user Password (this do work) because the problem is not with your password. If there is any trouble with your keychain file this will fix it.

2.- Opened Disk Aid and run Fix Persmissions just in case there was left some wrong file permissions during the upgrade.

3.- Went back to the Key Chain App and Locked and Unlocked the Keychain using the Lock in the top left corner of the app. When asked for my password I simply typed my User password.

After this everything worked fine. These are the steps that I followed but I really think that #3 did the trick here. You could try to do only #3 directly and it might fix your problem, but fixing the Keychain and fixing OS permissions is never a bad Idea.

Good Luck friends.:apple:

I tried this steps; (Maverick 10.9 installed) locking and unlocking wasn't working at all. What I did:
- Switch to another login profile on my Mac that seems to be not hit by the problem
- Disabled in iCloud the 'keychain' option
- Shutdown this login profile, switched to the problem profile and logout
- Restart, and it seems to be working now...

But: keychain-AID still leads to a crash of Keychain app; it bothers me. Not everything is perfect?

Before this steps I reinstalled Maverick again (not a fresh install); that wasn't working either.

Strange problem; especially because it appears instantly, without any installations or something doing like that.

Hmmmm, maybe, maybe not.

Just tried something and at the moment the usual pop ups after restart haven't appeared. (still early yet though)
In Keychain Access, having gone through the Edit >>> Change Password for keychain "login" process I went into File >>> Delete Keychain "login" and clicked "Delete References" I didn't choose the "references & Files" as I wasn't sure what issues this might cause. So far all seems to be working again (although while typing this I just heard the padlock sound in the background. Once again, fingers crossed.:(

All of the above

I've tried all of the above solutions and I've re-installed OSX Mavericks having used super duper to save my entire disc, just in case. and still it does it. Could be selecting a window to throw the damn thing out soon:mad:
Don't know where to go from here except an expensive trip to an Apple 'Genius' :apple::rolleyes:

Shush!

Whisper it quietly but I've gone a full 3 hours without a pop up appearing. Having done the above mentioned remedies I once again did a keychain reset.
Keychain Access >>> Preferences >>> Reset my Default Keychain and so far all working again fine.
As I've said many times, watch this space.;)

Worked for me. Thanks so much! This is outlined in this Apple Support article too: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5362

That fixed my problem. I have 3 Macs and this is the first time I've ever encountered this.

Worked for Me!

Hi everyone

I suddenly had the same problem after awhile of no issues with mavericks.
so naturally I went to google to look for sites to find a solution and I stumbled across this one (second on the list i think)

I tried a few things without success
then I tried locking the "login" keychain and unlocking it again with the user password (the user password was not working with "local items" keychain)

After unlocking "login" again a box appeared asking me to change the password for "local items" but I needed the old password
however if you click the "reset password" button on the bottom left of the box it tells you that you won't be able to access your "iCloud" keychain and accepting that seemed to sort it all out "local items" became unlocked, the annoying boxes stopped popping up and I still have access to everything

Sorry for the long winded post

I tried this and the computer beach-balled for about 3 minutes, then
everything worked. I had previously gone into keychain firstaid and unchecked the "sync password" box as well. Good luck!

My problem was a little different. I installed Mavericks right after it came out and didn't have any problems. This morning I found my laptop completely locked up when I opened it. A restart brought it back up. Then Keychain kept asking for a password for various apps. It didn't like my log in password and I didn't remember creating one for keychain.

I followed the advice given here about locking and unlocking access to keychain. It locked fine, but hung on the unlock. A number of apps were hanging at the same time. I restarted again and was able to unlock it. It then brought up a dialog to enter a new keychain password, but it wanted the old one as well. The log in password didn't work so I just left the old password blank and it took it. It hung again so I just force killed it and restarted it and everything was fine.

Same problem more details

Hello, as many i started having this problem put of the blue with Mavericks.

I tried every solution you indicated here.

I deleted the weird folder in ~library&keychain, reset the password in the keychain app, completely logged out from icloud...

What is happening now is this:
if I start the computer and log in WITH internet connection on. I immediately receive all the messages and I have all the folders in my account locked and inaccessible. Plus if I try to get into icloud in system configuration, the panel never appear and the system configuration freeze

If I start and log in WITHOUT internet connection on... everything works perfectly for 4-5 hours, then suddenly the problem rises again.

If I log in and leave the compuer without internet I can work as log as I like without problem

What can I do?

iCloud Keychain Passwords need a total overhaul

What a piece of rubbish this new “secure” password generation and recall is on iCloud/Mavericks. Its behaviour is completely inconsistent. Sometimes it will remember a generated secure password in Keychain, sometimes it will not, so unless you have written down the password it is lost forever. I have taken to writing down these secure random passwords and checking in Keychain every time after it has generated a new password.

Sometimes in Safari it will fill in the previously generated password but sometimes it suggests another new one, which is totally useless and you have to to back to Keychain to find the original one, copy and paste it. The lists of internet passwords on iCloud in Keychain should be included in the list in Safari preferences but only seems partially to be so.

I have done all the usual first aid and reset up iCloud Keychain on my various devices but it seems no better. For the time being, I think I am going to give up using it altogether and go back to my previous system of password generation, where I write the pw down in a little book, so if Keychain does not remember it, I can find it elsewhere.
