Good to see AppShopper back, though I had it on my phone all along and didn't need to rely on Apple to have it available for download - I didn't even know it was removed until I read something about just that in the AppGratis news. But things like this always make me keep copys of important apps or app versions just before they stop being awesome on my hard drive.

So how do you guys deal with IAP/ads in this version? If I paid for the ad-free IAP, will I be spared with ads in the new app? I haven't seen any so far.

BTW: Great you guys found a way without being forced to go with a web version, although a web version wouldn't hurt, too. In the early days after Twitter bought Tweetie, they were still awesome and had a web version for some time which pretty much imitated the iOS app version in a successful way (not the way it does now, whether be it their app or their mobile version)... maybe a hint of where to go.
If you are testing a web version, I would pretty much like to beta-test if (and let that be a big 'if' since you didn't even point into the direction of a possibility for a web version) you are planning on releasing such a thing, maybe as a fall-back safety measure if Apple pulls another string or when issues occur within the app. ;)

edit: Since Apple messed up its iOS 6 App Store with the bad preview system they call a list (they obviously only built it in since they bought the license for that impractical layout and didn't want the money to be wasted) and since they never had an actual solution for really discovering rather that finding specific apps, Discovery Apps are imo very much needed. A long time ago, I chose AppShopper for its great layout and platform-wide features (please polish the Mac Apps section, maybe embed them into the app as well?) and I still believe it to be the one with the most suitable algorithm for me.

The problem with web apps is that you need to reload the interface elements every time. It's bound to be slower than native apps.

Search for apps instead of getting a clean result you get game "x" lite, pro, lite HD, Pro HD why not just have one and "HD" as an in app purchase so that your scores are the same thru all devices (but with these multiple apps apple can say look how many apps we have! lol)

I believe that is whey he mentioned using IAP (In App Purchases) instead of having multiple versions.

And how about apps that are not games? Like utilities where you want to test full functionality to see if it fits your needs not a limited version with missing functions that can't be tested..

Paper and others have done the limited functionality model well. It would be interesting for the Apps to have a time limit and an IAP to remove this restriction.

Actually a good app idea. :) The social aspect is sorely missing, unless you include the App Store's "popularity" rankings that is a system so gamed that it's not really funny.

I really like this app/service and use A LOT!

I've got both the old version and the new one too. Frankly, the old looked better.

Where's the "What's new" section? Are you going to introduce it back in the future update?

And the screenshots of apps are smaller too.

Apple are on a serious powertrip, shouldn't have removed the old version.

Here is my take on what is going on with "App Discovery" apps. The big stink was over AppGratis, and people have been wondering why some apps are removed and some stay. Apple claims it is about "confusion" but it isn't. They are using that as a way to get rid of them because it's a convenient excuse.

What Apple doesn't want is any apps that can "Game the system." By that I mean an app that does something like charge the developer to feature them. That's why apps that simply highlight apps that have gone free or are discounted are left alone. This revised app is likely being allowed because it is based on the opinions of real users. So, I don't anticipate this app being removed again, because it is not designed to allow gaming of the system.

Add Me! Larrybeo

As you can tell from Macrumors I'm rather opinionated. I started with the first iPod Touch then bought the iPhone 3G. I've downloaded over 3,000 apps myself! It wasn't until recently I had 100 Gigabits of .ipa files in my iTunes folder!! Just type in larrybeo into the appshopper add box!

Could that explain why the "What's new" tab is gone?

I don't understand why Apple removed an app that leads directly to app sales.

It's like you own a business and there's a guy outside telling everyone about your specials and pointing folks to your restaurant. For free... and telling him to leave.

WTF? Anyway, good to see the app is back.

Easy.. Apple doesn't need that guy.

I almost cannot sync it, then via iFile I realized they have the same name so I had to remove the old version.

Anyway, this one looks great, if not sort of the same, but I miss the "Sort By" on my Wish List (where I could for instance, sort by price, to check which apps went free on the week in case I haven't checked in days.. now I have to scroll through them all chronologically).

Welcome back. I always check AppShopper for new games. Good thing the app is back. :)
