Just an add on note, I grabbed this from CNN-

"Turner said the devices have been in place for two or three weeks in Boston; New York City; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; Atlanta, Georgia; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Austin, Texas; San Francisco, California; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

However, only in Boston did the light boards create such a furor. In Seattle and several suburbs, the signs were removed without fuss, according to The Associated Press."

and..

"It had a very sinister appearance," Coakley told reporters. "It had a battery behind it, and wires."

He also should have added "and a little cartoon character giving the finger"

Okay, this is getting even crazier. They've actually started arresting people:
Ok, now it's ridiculous. First they overreacted and caused everybody to panic, when they should have been doing everything they could to prevent mass panic, and now they're making it worse by arresting them. Doesn't help them any, and goes more towards that whole "culture of fear" thing that makes us want to blame the authorities who overreacted than the idiots who got paid but didn't get a permit.

$5 says he doesn't get convicted.
Worst they'll get is a fine. If they get convicted, this really is becoming a police state. I can't even see them getting charged with anything that could stick.

this country is getting more pathetic by the day...

Don´t wanna be an American idiot.
Don´t want a nation under the new mania.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind**** America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn´t meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We´re not the ones who´re meant to follow.
For that´s enough to argue.

Well maybe I´m the ****** America.
I´m not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alienation.
Everything isn´t meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We´re not the ones who´re meant to follow.
For that´s enough to argue.

Don´t wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It´s calling out to idiot America.

This stories reminds me a lot of another stunt.

Especially this bit:
"One of Fried and Torrone's biggest worries was that the police would show up and arrest them. But as the Roomba rolls from lane to lane, two cops ride by on bicycles. They don't stop to bust anyone. Instead, they beep their horns. Everyone laughs."

Which is a little surprising, as that stunt actually was dangerous - if anyone had veered to avoid the robot they could have started a pile-up pretty darn quick!

Yes, these light boards are the usual way terrorists attack... bright flashing lights that have been hanging around for weeks. And given their size, they could have done almost as much damage as a flash-bang or an M80.

Boston overreaction to Aqua Teen Hunger Force promotion

That’s Not a Hair Question…

two guys (Peter Berdovsky and Sean Stevens) were hanging up blinking electronic signs to promote the new Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie in Boston - and caused a city-wide terrorism-fueled panic.

The two were arrested, spent a night in jail and gave the most hilarious press conference in the history of humankind. Check out how freaking IRATE these b-hole reporters get when all the suspects want to talk about is “Famous Hairstyles of the 1970s.”
Seriously, this is the funniest a guy wearing dreadlocks has ever been.

You Tube video of press conference

Edit: Yea I did a search and the thread did not show up. Hilarious anyway

Boston Did Not Overreact

Press conference was funny, I agree.

But what I do not agree with at all is that Boston or any of the other large urban cities overreacted to the absolutely moronic stunt this show and the PR firm pulled. One thing would have been placing these things around malls or store areas where people might at least be in a mindset that this thing was an advertisement. But top place anything that even gives a hint of suspicious activity around bridges, subways, and other mass transit areas in major cities is completely unacceptable and they (TV station and people who put them up, but mostly TV station) deserve every fine and penalty. This was really bad and the reality is that when suspicious objects are placed in such areas our law enforcement community must respond, it is not possible to wave anything off as just a maybe or a joke when items, of a suspicious nature, are placed in public and vulnerable locations.

Any publicity is good publicity. Now a whole legion of people know what Aqua Teen Hunger Force is. I say its a victory for advertisers. And Boston thinks its sooooo special, like it deserves to be bombed or something. Trust me, the only people that want to bomb Boston are the English, to get back for that damned tea party. And I say, let them, and let me be the first to welcome our new colonial masters.

Yeah, but they can do so without bringing the whole city to a standstill, panicking everyone when they should have been keeping things calm. Especially considering they had been up for a few weeks, and in several other cities that didn't freak out. If this was real, they would have made it worse. Reacting is good, overreacting is bad.

Now the head of CN has resigned.

Err rulez!!!

this whole thing's too funny. it must sucked to be in the city when it happened though. i was really surprised that no one knew that they were Err and Ignignokt...

aniej:

i.) it wasn't a stunt and it wasn't moronic. however, i did find the officials and the media moronic as they both caused chaos in the city.

ii.) how are "malls and store areas" not "public and vulnerable locations?"
