There is a magic price point. In consumer electronics it is $200. Over $200 your sales are limited, under $200 the market explodes.

I think on iOS it is $5. Especially since you can't return it or resell it if you don't like it. With a Wii or XBox disk - I can trade it in or sell it if I don't like it. With downloadable content I can't. So since there is no physical media and associated cost - they can make it cheaper, and since there is less risk to me I might buy it for $5 or less...

Just my opinion though.

If a game company wants, sell a basic version for $5 with in-app upgrades for a couple bucks each...
Uhh, you can't return your purchases on WiiWare or Steam. They are both digital downloads.

Sure you can. You just tip your Wii or XBox or computer or whatever and dump the bits out of the disc slot into an envelope and mail them back. I haven't tried it, but I hear they stick a bit in the XBox so you really have to give it a good shake.

I actually think that iOS games need to INCREASE in price. It's far to expensive to produce complex games so the sub $5 mental barrier is limiting the quality of software on the platform. It's simply not cost effective to spend money on a reasonably large team required to produce a higher tier of game.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

This Aralon game is actually really cool and I think us iDevice owners should try to support efforts like this. The graphics would be top notch if not for the Unreal Engine recently being displayed. But, a few very minor UI and control issues aside, this is a tremendous achievement for iOS.

And, like someone previously mentioned, it would be great to get some kind of progress syncing with games.

If it's $5 with additional "DLC" (like buying Fallout 3 Broken Steel), that's fine. As long as it's not $1 for that super cool sword in game...

Infinity Blade is a very recent and very successful counter-example. I have probably spent around $200 on apps for my phone over the last 3 years. If the prices were over $10, I wouldn't have bought anything.

Companies can make just as much money (or in some cases much more) by selling a lot of something at a cheaper price than selling a few of something at a higher price. This is especially true with the App Store since Apple foots the distribution costs.

I agree. I paid $25 for the PSP Kingdom Hearts game, and I'd pay a lot more than $5 for the same game on iP4. The quality has to be there, though. I still want my $13 back for Chaos Rings.

Not so much a counter example. While very fun, Infinity Blade is a pretty simple game and on the expensive side for the platform. In the end it feels like a $6 game. I would have liked to see more exploration options and variety of opponents, but instead it's limited in scope to that of a $6 game. I want games to feel like $60 games.
IB also serves a larger goal as a 'proof of concept' for the iOS U3 SDK, so it would have been a success for chair/epic even if it was a net financial loss.

I'm not suggesting that games prices should go anywhere near as high as retail distributed console games, but I think $10-$15 for a meaty high quailty game is fair.

BTW - Your willing to pay $10 for a quality game. I was talking about the users who get offended when a developer charges even $5.

zzzzzZZzzz.... What? Oh! Sorry. I fell asleep watching that trailer. They spent about five seconds showing combat (one of the more important parts of an RPG), so I have my doubts about how compelling that system is. Graphics certainly aren't very impressive. Certainly worse than Elder Scrolls: Morrowind which was namechecked in the article. Frankly, doing Warcraft-style grinding (aka "crafting") on a mobile device is not really my idea of a good time.

I'm picturing some fool actually trying this, and it's quite a sight.

To be fair :

:D

True and likewise, remember this is "Mac"rumors.com :D

This hilights my desire for some form of progress syncing between iOS devices, like iBooks does.

It's not all that much fun to progress on your iPad to a certain point in a game, and then find yourself at Whataburger the next day with only your iPhone, and have to start all over on the game.

Whataburger mmmmmmm

not that grinding should be ever used but....

grinding is WAY better on a mobile device then a desktop device! because grinding is boring yet rewarding, so on a mobile device you can play in the car or bus, or waiting for a meeting, or going to the bathroom, or during class.

which is why Pokemon was so successful, but I agree the trailer was sooo dumb!!

Suprised that Lara Croft & the guardian of light didn't make the list as Square Enix almost released the full game for both the iPad and iPhone, multiplayer options, just a few levels are missing from this app along with water-down textures

I don't mind combat grinding so much, as long as the tactics don't get stale, but crafting is just ridiculous. Harvest this to build this, to make this to upgrade this. I have plenty of tedium in my life without that hamster wheel.

If anything it's not an Add for the games but an AD for TouchArcade. Arn own and runs both sites. By posting it here some users might come there and start browsing making him money on that site as well.

It's a business hes not in it for your sake. Just sayin..

I was searching for an good RPG game for the iPhone will definitely try this one out.

Since when is MacRumors posting gaming related news on the front page?

Our game iRequiem is also released today, why not post that news on the front page too?

, No offense but your game is not doing anything ground breaking enough to warrant an inclusion to the high quality games in these articles. Better luck next time?

Also to all the people claiming this article is an ad, use some logic. Millions of iPod Touches and iPhones are bought during Q4, especially during the holiday season, it's only natural some people would want to play games on their new device. This article is not ad but news to those people of what games might be a good purchase for them.

Tis the season to be jolly, seems like people are just making up reasons to Troll and vote an article as negative.

What's bad about a groundbreaking new RPG and games that push iOS Devices to the limit?

A sync system for game saves/app data is definitely needed. Firemint, the developer of the Real Racing series has it's own syncing service that allows players to sync their progress and game data to their online server so that if they ever uninstall the app or for some reason have their data wiped from their device they can then recall their data from the server with no problems. This is something that Apple should certainly look into implementing through Gamecenter or at least provide some kind of option to manually back-up app data.

this post should have two negative ratings: one for the ads masked as news, and the other is for 10 bucks for the world of poo. way too much.

Really what? It's $14.99 on WiiWare and $9.99 on Steam for Mac/PC and you are getting the definitive version on iPad. No one should be complaining about the price.

That's just it.
I bought it on the PC and Mac for around $2 each.
Never would touch it on WiiWare for that price.

It's an indie game, I'm not saying it isn't worth it, just what the sweet spot is.

I don't think I am that far off since I haven't heard a single person in this thread claim they bought and played it.

Look at it this way...

I would pay $9.99 for Bejeweled 3 for the iPad, but how about Bejeweled 2 HD? No way.
