the opening they thought could be a door to a 'fourth' chamber was apparently only the footprint a missing marble stanchion.
there is no apparent additional passage, so the third chamber could be the final one.
this is the room where they found the head and the fragments from the wings of the sphinxes, and the two (broken) massive marble doors.

this would make the third chamber the burial chamber, and in this case it would be obviously completely looted.

the excavations are not complete, and there could still be some sealed area, particularly under the floor of the third chamber. or so we ca hope ;)

i find it very puzzling (and disappointing) that it would end here, without anything significant to mark the burial chamber (apart from broken pieces from the entrance).
it would also send my theory of the complex proceeding all the way to the geometrical center of the tumulus (post #71) crumbling down :D

even if this is all there is, still a very exciting find, which will keep archeologists discussing who was buried there for ages.

... but I still hope they find a "secret passage" :D

here are some fragments of the wings

amazing

YouTube: video

I can't be the only one who watching this thinking "Be careful! Stop scraping / hammering it!!!".

Looks amazing. On the mosaic at the end of that video, the headwear of the man on the left is a bit strange, I hadn't before seen hats like that from that era. I thought at first it was a tricorne hat but obviously it isn't.

What an incredible find. The quality of the stonework and near-total lack of weathering is mind-blowing. You just don't find architecture this old in such wonderful condition.

I don't see any mention of whether the team thinks this tomb has been disturbed or not..

Love the conveyor. Wish I had that for some of the excavations I've done.

I've been following this story, let's keep our fingers crossed that the looters missed some really cool stuff.

Off topic.. but that Sphinx head gives me the total creeps! Bet she makes into a horror movie soon :)

What are these artifacts? They found a complete skeleton beneath the dirt shown in the photo, or was it removed before the photo was taken? The lid had been removed by looters and left open after they stole whatever was in there? The looters could be expected to steal gold and stuff, but would they normally bother with the containers, spears (dime a dozen in those days?) and personal items? In those days items of archaeological significance could not have been sold for all that much at the local stolen goods outlet.

There may have been collectors back then, but how would you prove the vase or spear belonged to an important person and get top dollar? It almost looks like the local juvenile delinquents of the day broke in there for fun and just messed stuff up. Did they find graffiti? It wouldn't seem likely that that professional thieves would spend the time to knock off heads and noses, break the doors up and all that.

I know

I do know that the Guardian UK links that were present in this thread no longer work. Have to do some digging to get more information, but this is the best find in my lifetime to watch. I am thrilled at the art and architecture that is being discovered. And most modern people think our ancestors where just dumb with stick and stones.....just look at what they created and it is obvious we underestimate all of them.
