Remember that IUP qualifies as cash and is unlocked out of the box.

But they still need to activate it with a number so you can't use a T-Mobile one to do IUP if you're on Verizon and vice versa if you're on T-Mobile you can't use a Verizon to do IUP ;)

That website has inaccurate information because it claims that A1660 (Verizon/Sprint) won't work with at&t or T-Mobile and doesn't even mention that it supports GSM.

From https://www.techwalls.com/iphone-7-plus-model-differences/

1. A1660: The iPhone 7 A1660 is considered the global phone as it is compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks. This model is available in the United States, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong and China. In the US, you can get the A1660 on Sprint and Verizon, or when you buy the SIM-free version.

Cellular bands:

  • FDD-LTE bands 1 (2100 MHz), 2 (1900 MHz), 3 (1800 MHz), 4 (AWS), 5 (850 MHz), 7 (2600 MHz), 8 (900 MHz), 12 (700 a MHz), 13 (700c MHz), 17 (700b MHz), 18 (800 MHz), 19 (800 MHz), 20 (800 DD), 25 (1900 MHz), 26 (800 MHz), 27 (800 SMR), 28 (700 APT MHz), 29 (700 de MHz), 30 (2300 WCS)
  • TD-LTE bands 38 (TD 2600 MHz), 39 (TD 1900 MHz), 40 (TD 2300 MHz), 41 (TD 2500 MHz)
  • TD-SCDMA 1900 (F), 2000 (A)
  • CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz)
  • GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
  • UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz)
Which basically means it will support Brazil and maybe Japan. Japan is getting their own model thouhh

Once it's activated you can switch to any carrier with it. Though you would still not be able to use the ATT or T-Mobile version with a cdma network.

But you have to activate with a number on it meaning you have to have an account with that carrier to begin with.

I guess this is more of, that thread where someone had a Tmoblie account and ranted about how his phone wouldn't be really a world phone and therefore "unlocked" because it is only GSM. To get a GSM/CDMA phone, he would have to sign up for sprint/Verizon, purchase the phone, and then cancel on them once the IUP is done, and pop his tmoblie SIM card in.

So theoretically you're correct. If one chooses to take the extra steps, they can ensure they have an "unlocked phone" that can work with any carrier; and still be on an installment plan (IUP).

He has to activate on a phone number. Once it's activated on that carrier all you have to do is use a sim from a different carrier and it would work perfectly. Did that a couple of times last year with the 6s+. Of course it supported both cdma and GSM though.

I know,

I'm not arguing with that, I stated that

The problem is he has to get a number to begin with, with that carrier...did you read my reply throughly?

I suppose if he wants to pay for a number temporarily with another carrier, be it a regular line that's cut short or prepaid (if prepaid works) then yes, I acknowledge that works. It's extra work. Not everyone wants the hassle.

Sprint is actually the best one.

I still don't understand why Apple didn't make the 7 a world phone...but usually sprint is the model apple employees recommend to any tourists.

It pretty much covers all the LTE bands so you're good.

Lots of tourists from China and HK buy the sprint model...same for the Europeans, that's why when the SE was first released, the sprint version was always out of stock.

*ETA, When you come back to the US, you should be fine with any of the prepaids...I've seen them with even cricket in it and it works.

The 4s came to Verizon. It wouldn't of mattered on either the 4s or 5 neither of them had a GSM chip on it.
The 4s is not LTE capable. Thus it was not unlocked.

Verzion went back a while ago and unlocked all the iPhones before the 5 however.

And it would have mattered if you had an unlocked iPhone 5 and wanted to go to Sprint.

If you had an unlocked iPhone 5 on Verizon the only other carrier you could use was Sprint and Sprint at that time would never allow any phone that wasn't bought from Sprint on their network. The difference with the 7 is that the Verizon and Sprint have both GSM and CDMA radios the ATT and T-Mobile don't.

Having been a Sprint customer for 16 years and investigating what I could about unlocking - you're right.

My point was that the whole unlock thing with the FCC started much earlier than the poster I responded to implied.

I would argue now however, that an unlocked iPhone 5 could be used on Sprint, but I'm probably wrong on that.

No. Last I heard, Sprint phones are still locked. Sprint is pretty good about providing unlock codes as long as you're a customer in good standing and have been so for six months.

I bought a sprint phone full price from my local apple store.

The phone is 100% unlocked. I activated it using my att sim.

I wonder if the Sprint iPhones bought at Sprint stores are also unlocked. They *should* be, but this is Sprint we're talking about. :D
