When it comes to iPhones, all warranties are a waste of money if you feel there's a reasonable chance you'll never need it.

You see, Apple will replace any iPhone for $200, as long as you can provide them with the (broken) phone. Applecare+ with 1 replacement is $150, so you save $50. BUT, you pay $100 even if you never break your phone. Similar warranties are around the same price, with some being hugely overpriced (verizons deductibles are highway robbery).

Imagine there's a 40% chance you break your phone. This leaves you with a 40% chance to save $50 if you buy Applecare+, but a 60% chance of saving $100 if you don't. Even with these relatively high odds of breaking your phone, not having applecare+ still is the better bet.

There's only 2 situations where ANY kind of warranty makes sense: you're almost sure you're going to damage your phone at least once, or you're concerned with theft. For people who are moderately careful and aren't in an area where theft is a concern, warranties just don't make sense

I also buy most electronics with Amex, but as far as I understand, they extend the regular warranty, that means that their protection only kicks in once the regular warranty has expired (after the first year) and since it is an extension of the regular warranty, they should not cover accidental damage, only whatever is covered by the regular warranty, I've never gotten apple care+, but given the fact that the black might show silver once scratched, I just might do it this time, so if it does get bad, I just drive over it and take it apple for a replacement...

I have never used Applecare before but would highly recommend SquareTrade. I bought the 2 year insurance when I purchased my iPhone 4 originally. About 1 year and 9 months after, the front home button on my iPhone decided to stop working. Took it to Apple and they weren't much help, but called SquareTrade and placed a claim. Went back to Apple, paid $150, sent that receipt over to SquareTrade, and they sent out a reimbursement check in the full amount that week.

Except AC+ doesn't cover theft... and AC+ extends warranty coverage to 2 years (in case there are any bugs 13 months down the road), plus gives battery replacement if you're less than 50% of capacity ($80 value service).

Check out this great comparison of Applecare+, SquareTrade, Asurion insurance (through carrier), and Best Buy plan...

Doing AC+. Have always upgraded every yr in the past so never felt it was worth it... but for me it's worth it now for the 2nd year of coverage.

$100... seems like its just a waste of money imo

Not buying it is d u m b. No offense. I got TWO new iPhones with my last apple care plan to address defects that appeared over time. That's apple care paid for itself easily.

Can someone please link me to an AMEX URL which explains the warranty if I buy with my credit card? My google-fu is coming up short :(

Ordering though AMX gives you that? Sweet, gonna be ordering though AMX then :D

yup. make sure to read the benefit guide; all sorts of swank benefits.

Damn! Amex's rewards site is down, so they are not linking to Apple (Or any other site) for the X3 points right now...
