The 3GS was not a minor upgrade from the 3G. It was actually the biggest generation gap of any new iPhone model in terms of hardware/performance.

I was basically saying that the designs stayed the same for the 3G & 3GS

I think we're all in for a surprise.

I'd be pleased if the leaked shell was what was intended for the 4S, but abandoned for whatever reasons. That would fit with everyone expecting a larger screen last year. It would also fit with Tim Cook's 'doubled down secrecy' comment (the leaked shell being an abandoned project)
