I dont know about those various websites selling sim cards with cheaper rates or whatever.
I would go directly to the company instead to make sure you dont fall for a scam.

I think that you'll want an Orlando number if you're mainly going to be called by people in Orlando. As far as I'm aware, US mobile numbers come from the same pool as landlines and will be a free call for local callers (from landline to mobile, although you'll still pay to receive the call).

Somebody actually from the US can correct me if I'm wrong :)

Are you still able to use the iPhone on the Sidekick plan? I thought T-Mobile stopped allowing that last year.

Could I possible charm my way into getting a free card and no activation fee.. That would make going with AT&T a little bit better easier.

You can but it might be more trouble than it's worth. When I went to NY the first AT&T store I went to they tried to charge me $100 for a SIM card. I got it for $25 in another store. I would just buy it from eBay if I were you.

You got scammed too. Every corporate store will give it to you for free and half of the authorized stores will give it to you for free as well if you mention the corporate store's policy.

The USA is about 5 years behind the UK in terms of cellphone technology..., and about twice the price !
Really?? So they UK is on Rev. 2 LTE???

They have the exact same tech found in the USA.

Mobile numbers are issued out of a separate pool.
Many carriers treat all local and long distance calls in the USA the same though. Very few carriers charge extra for a long distance call anymore.

Also, there is no such thing as a "free call".
Minutes are used regardless of the number you dial.
Some carriers offer unlimited night and weekend calling on larger plans, but technically you still pay for it in higher monthly fees.

Hey HelixOmnimedia,

Firstly, Curious, are you about to head out there to do the Walt Disney World International Program, if so you're about to have the best year of your life, Did it Sept 06 - Nov 07 best year of my life :)

Anyway, I dont think anyone has mentioned this, have you already got an established credit score in the US? I'm making the assumption you're going to be working for the mouse, it's probably going to be 2-3 months before you get your social (unless you already have one?) which you'd need to apply for a contract (I don't know this 100% maybe a US resident could confirm?). A friend of mine whilst I was there purchased an Original iPhone, and on top of the cost of the handset (which if I understand correctly as the customer already covered the cost of the handset back then was on an open ended contract a bit like you're looking for) and had to pay a $500 (refundable) deposit just to connect the new line because she did not have an established credit score.

If you go down the T-Mobile route, they have the prepaid options that work a little like contracts and no credit check is required and they have the data option, the only issue being you won't have 3G as others have previously advised. This would probably be the best route for you? I travel to the US regularly with my job, I have an AT&T GoPhone SIM in my iPhone when over there and just buy the 100mb Data Feature Pack which works for me, though if you're there the whole month would probably not be enough for what you'd need.

One thing worth noting with the MrSimCard thing (I've looked into that) is that every month you have to pay a monthly fee to them to keep the internet, it is on the website, but its hidden deep in the FAQs somewhere, it's not a 1 off fee as I thought it appeared.

Anyway just a couple thoughts of mine, if you're not working for the mouse ignore my assumptions lol, it's just cos you're going for 12mo and from Scotland so I just put 2 and 2 together lol :)

I would assume optophobia was referring to handsets as opposed to network technology. This has changed recently (since the iPhone actually), but it used to be the case that US handsets always used to look so dated. I had friends in the US who'd look at what options we had in the UK and would be jealous they couldn't get hold of them. Thankfully we seem to be on a level playing field on the whole nowadays :) If optophobia didn't mean handsets then I don't know what they were referring to lol :)

No, sidekick data wont work.

i was in ny 2 weeks ago and bought a t-mobile pay as you go card. I also had the guy activate the sidekick option (1$ per day) which gave me edge on the iphone.
The only problem is that t-mobile is blocking traffic through port 80, so I had to use VPN. But it worked :)

Hey Colin,

You are correct, I am going to work for that mouse called Mickey once again. I love it out there, so happy I get to go back for a year this time. I already have my social security, so I don't need to deal with that headache again. After speaking to both T-Mobile and AT&T I was 100% set going with T-Mobile as it was cheaper, and where I am right now, I don't get great 3G coverage. So it wasn't really bothering me.

But after speaking to a few friends out there, Edge is really slow there and they prefer 3G - so that threw me again. Then I logged onto The WDW Hub (you'll know what that is) and found out that as a Disney employee you get discount with AT&T. So as of right now, I'm about to email the Disney/AT&T rep to see what they say.

It will probably be GoPhoneSim, that I'll go onto, just have been told by multiple sources that you NEED the iPhone Data plan at $30 - I just wish that included texts. Silly US Cellular Network

You yanks get totally ripped off by your providers! And I thought Telstra was bad

So...you just thought we spent all our time complaining about AT&T around here 'cause we think its fun?

No...we're being totally serious.

But after speaking to a few friends out there, Edge is really slow there and they prefer 3G - so that threw me again.

EDGE tends to run about 200 kbps. 3G varies a lot, but in Orlando I think you'll find it's between 1,200 and 1,700 most of the time.

So yeah...a slight difference! It's only about 6 or 7 times as fast!

Then I logged onto The WDW Hub (you'll know what that is) and found out that as a Disney employee you get discount with AT&T.

I get a pretty good discount because of my job too. It takes me down from 'too expensive' to just 'kind of expensive.'

Holy snappin duck ****.

You yanks get totally ripped off by your providers! And I thought Telstra was bad, who the hell suggested making you pay for outgoing AND incoming calls and SMS? That just makes absolutely no sense to me, especially since I'm pretty sure SMS costs the telco nothing.

sources: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/28/business/28digi.html?_r=2&partner=rss&emc=rss http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/12/text-messages-c/

you have to pay for the bandwidth of the control channel. only reason they put SMS on there was because it was so much bandwidth for very little traffic and they found a use for it.

We (speakers of the Queen's) tend to use "Are" for companies as they are groups of people.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Neither is incorrect.

So you'd say "Are Toyota coming out with a cheaper model next year?"

I'd have thought I'd have heard that in a TV show or movie from over there, but I never have.

Could I possible charm my way into getting a free card and no activation fee.. That would make going with AT&T a little bit better easier.

I believe you probably can charm your way... being Scottish you've got to be pretty damn charming... and Helix don't forget that the iPhone kicks arse on wi-fi, I'm assuming WDW is way connected... any coffee shop, fast food restaurant, and the such will have wi-fi... wouldn't be overly worried about Edge verses 3G...

So...you just thought we spent all our time complaining about AT&T around here 'cause we think its fun?

No...we're being totally serious.

To be fair, us UKers expect to pay twice the price for most American products (especially Apple). So when we go to the US we expect everything to be a lot cheaper, especially when the exchange rates are taken into account. I know it's not really comparable (check Apple websites for direct comparisons), but here a box of Lucky Charms will set you back about £10, which is what, $18 or so?

I did that and got 3 phones activated for free. My mother in law also lost her phone. So she went to the at&t store and they gave her a free SIM card and told her it was cheaper to buy a Go Phone and put the SIM card in that (She doesn't have an iPhone and lost her phone at work).

SIM cards should be free on postpaid accounts... at Att corporate stores. Indirect Agents more than likely will charge
