Chances are, you will probably have to put down some deposit without SSN.

So I would suggest pay and go, and that's it.

Disney employee you get discount with AT&T.

GoPhoneSim
I do not think the FAN discount work with prepaid plans.
EDGE tends to run about 200 kbps. 3G varies a lot, but in Orlando I think you'll find it's between 1,200 and 1,700 most of the time.

So yeah...a slight difference! It's only about 6 or 7 times as fast!

Edge is more like 60-90kbps average while 3G can get to 1100kbps quite often. So 7 times is an understatement, 3G is more like 14 times faster on the low-end and over 20 times faster when you get good speeds.

Also it should be noted that AT&T's 3G frequencies works better in buildings than T-mobiles.

Ebay AT&T sim cars. Unlimited talk and internet for $30-40$ but only good for one month. Rinse, repeat every month. Your phone number will change but oh well

UPDATE

Ok so I have arrived in Orlando, FL. Going to start work at Walt Disney World this weekend. Spoke to a Disney AT&T rep who has been so helpful. And he got me the best plan he could with discount without a contract. So I'll get:

  • 450 Anytime Minutes
  • Free Evening and Weekend Calls
  • Free AT&T to AT&T Calls
  • Unlimited iPhone Data
  • Unlimited Text
  • Discounted International Dialing
  • No Activation Fee & Free Simcard
  • $77 per Month.

Does that sounds reasonable?

I would say yes, although international calling will cost you an arm and a leg. I use Skype for that.

Yeah, I just installed Skype about 20minutes ago, so I think I'm all setup for that.

Read about the WorldConenct (international discount). its $.08 per minute to landlines. $.28 per minute to landlines. Which isn't that bad, so I told them to remove it the now its ($5) and if I wanted it later I would add it. But I can see me using Skype for calling home.

I want to thank HelixOmnimedia and all of the other forum members who provided feedback to this topic.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as HelixOmnimedia, the only difference being that I'll be arriving in the States from Japan rather than the UK.

This thread has answered nearly all of my questions regarding my own options.

Kudos to the Macrumors community for providing excellent information!

You got scammed too. Every corporate store will give it to you for free and half of the authorized stores will give it to you for free as well if you mention the corporate store's policy.

I wasn't scammed, the $25 I payed for it was credited in my SIM card so I didn't even need to top it up.

Mobile numbers are issued out of a separate pool.
But they are both fully integrated into the North American Numbering Plan. Mobile numbers and landline numbers both take their numbers from the same area code (dialling prefix).

It is important to contrast this against the system in the UK, where (anecdotally) there really are different pools for landlines than for cellular phones. The caller pays more to place a call to a wireless phone than she would pay to place the same call to a wired phone. (This is the price that's paid for the so-called "free" incoming calls -- the extra cost incurred in completing the wireless call is borne by the caller instead of the receiver.)

Amongst carriers that still make a distinction between long distance and local, calls between any two numbers within the same local calling area are treated as local calls, and charged at your carrier's local rate regardless of whether either or both participants are on landlines or mobile phones.

HelixOmnimedia seeing as i couldnt PM you, i thought id post in this topic....
did you ever get your epson D88 printer to work with airport?

Moving company rates vary from one country to another and also it depends on your specific needs and what country you are moving to. An online search can help you to take advantage of free service quotes offered by some moving companies, you can compare these quotes and select a company that will provide you with quality service within your budget.

So you'd say "Are Toyota coming out with a cheaper model next year?"

I'd have thought I'd have heard that in a TV show or movie from over there, but I never have.

"Are they coming out with a cheaper model next year?"
"Is it coming out with a cheaper model next year?"
Would you refer to Toyota as They or It? I feel that the British form is more syntactically consistent, but I'll continue to use the Yank form out of habit.

Back on topic, US carrier charges assume that they are providing a significant subsidy to the handset. With the $400 iPhone subsidy this comes out to $22 to $33 a month if you upgrade as soon as you are eligible (12-18 months, depending on your contract).
Unfortunately contracts w/o hardware subsidies aren't any cheaper.

The title of this thread should read as follows:

"Is AT&T ripping me off"

Much better isn't it?

"We (speakers of the Queen's) tend to use "Are" for companies as they are groups of people."

That was posted about 10 posts up. It would be much better if you read the thread.
