This is a well known fact (unless you were just being sarcastic), the 9600 series was just a die shrink of the 8600.

Hahaha, I just KNEW you would respond with the old 'It's a well known fact' response.

Some test results:

Yeap, they share the same number of stream processors but that's about it. But it could just be imagination it's about twice the performance of the 8600 eh?

I am guessing Apple would charge around $200 for BluRay, and thats at the bare minimum, they will probably charge a lot more. For $90 you can get a slim, external USB powered bluray drive. You decide.

Where can I find one of these for $90? I just had to rebuy an external DVD for my MBA after original broke. I specifically tried to find a Blu Ray thinking Apple may soon adopt it, and the DVD compatibility would work in mean time. I couldn't find an external Blu Ray for less than $300, and that wasn't "slim" either.

Yes I want one of these 90$ Blu Ray drives too please let me know where to get one ... waiting with bated breath for the info.

Well your head is telling right if the notion of new Macbook Pro's are in the wild next month, because they most certainly will be. Expect anything new tomorrow until either January or Feb. Dude, a whole new set of MBP's were just released in June but they intentionally missed out key components like blu-ray and the new chip arandale. Despite what other try to tell you Apple have upgraded lines in under 6 months.

Why are you so certain? Do you have this from sources inside Apple?

It sounds like you are just guessing, but you make it sound as if it's a certainty.

How much do you want to bet that there will be no new MBPs out next month?

isn't there almost always a refresh before a new OS is introduced, meaning you still have to pay Apple to get the operating system separately?

Fixed, but no chips exist, so any update would be later.

How much do you want to bet that there will be no new MBPs out next month?

I'd bet dual 30" Cinema Displays that there won't be a new MacBook Pro next month, given the release of a new model two months ago.

Go look on Amazon you sarcastic tools. http://www.amazon.com/colour-Extern...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1250973146&sr=8-16

My god people here are ridiculous. Just because you can't find one means it doesn't exist right? Ugh.

FastMac also has a line of slim external Blu-ray drives. I use the basic "combo" drive that reads BDs and reads and writes DVDs and CDs. Currently selling for $109 at http://store.fastmac.com/product_info.php?cPath=10_2_52&products_id=406 . Works well enough -- can watch Blu-rays under Windows with the right software, and runs on AC or USB power. The drives that can write BDs obviously cost more.

Edit: FWIW, I also wrote a tutorial on playing Blu-rays on a MacBook Pro using this drive awhile back: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/647170/
