Agreed. My motto has always been to only upgrade when the new model offers triple the performance and features. So, upgrading from an iPad1 > iPad 3 would be good, but upgrading from the iPad 2 might be pushing it, unless one were to get a decent resell price (which would be pretty hard now that Apple dropped the price!).

So, just use what you got and be happy with it for a while. errr...

To own Apple stuff is to suffer. :p

The screen itself is well worth the upgrade from iPad 1 to the New iPad. This is a fantastic update :)

No. you just don't like it because it doesn't fit your standards. Something being "Major" anything is subjective.

Then a debate over whether it's a major upgrade or not is pointless. Your standard for 'major upgrade' would be if the subsequent iteration of a device compelled all owners of the previous version to upgrade. Virtually nothing can satisfy this standard.

I also think it's a huge upgrade!

When jumping from the 3Gs to the 4, it made the 3Gs' screen look 8-bit! I can't imagine the crispness of the iPad retina screen, it must go bonkers!

How can some people say this is not a MAJOR upgrade?! The technology that went into mass producing the iPad's retina display is INSANE! If you don't want to buy one, fine, but don't dismiss it as a major upgrade because it is. The screen alone is the reason to spend the extra $100 over an iPad2.

Who cares what others think? If you like it, buy it. If you don't, then don't.

1080p video is not a new feature, it's an improvement of an existing feature, much like the specs.

And voice dictation? Wow I'm sold!!!

Do you know what 'moving goalposts' are?

Your criteria for what would satisfy you on this device are vague and ill-formed. When they manage to coalesce into something meaningful it's clear they are unreasonable standards.

Not sure why you think my criteria is unreasonable when other devices have had the technology I wish for for over a year.

And my other wish, Siri, is already on the iPhone. Apple could port that to the iPad in a day.. :p

Because you think "Better camera. Better screen. More processing cores. Faster Internet" at the same price a year later is a 'minor upgrade'.

Not only Crazy but Haters!!! :D
Probably because they couldn't get through the preorder page. >.<

Ahhh, got it.

I agree, 2048x1536 resolution is a revolution... :apple:

This technology was not available at this scale or price 3-6 months ago. Sure you could get high-res displays but not in the huge yields necessary for this type of rollout. So it's nowhere near ho-hum. Add to that the beefier processor necessary to take advantage of the display and the battery technology to make it hum without a hit in battery life -- oh, and you get your foot in the door for $499. All great advances.

It may not inspire everyone to clamor to get one but to an armchair quarterback such as myself - this one was well-played.

Definitely a major upgrade.
Seems like the only reason people would think this is a minor upgrade is:

1. They have an iPad 2 and want to justify that theirs is "just as good" or can do everything the iPad 3 can.

2. Vain people who wanted the case to look different so that when they tout around the iPad 3 it has more of a "look at me, I'm special factor" over the iPad

I don't care if the case looks the same, virtually everything inside is an upgrade.

The best thing about the new iPad: Retina Display

The worst thing about the new (and old) iPad: iOS = prison.

Come Apple, please give touch screen for a REAL computer with REAL OS.

Why is touch screen devices only for TOYS???

Because you think "Better camera. Better screen. More processing cores. Faster Internet" at the same price a year later is a 'minor upgrade'.

Because it is...in my opinion.

Better camera - I only use the iPad for quick snaps. It's not a serious photography device.
Better screen - iPad 2 screen is fine. I can read books and photo clarity is great.
More processing cores - not a gamer and the iPad 2 is fluid. Difficult to see what benefit this would have for me.
Faster Internet - uk doesn't have 4G so technically this isn't an upgrade for us. Also, I use wifi the vast majority of the time.

I'm not going to call it a major upgrade when I have no use for most of the new features. I'm sure you wouldn't either!

Except for the iPhone 3G, I can't remember a iOS device that a large group here didn't grouse about an update, yet they all outsold the previous model and became the standard bearer for their product category. This is the kind of update Apple does. It never just throws every new tech into a box. It picks one or two. It's drip, drip, not splish, splash.

The new screen looks stunning. I can't wait to see it in person. All I can say is that it got me to bump up to the 64GB model b/c I think I'll be editing a lot more casual pictures and movie clips on the iPad now instead of my Mac. I don't think I'm alone. It's a solid upgrade from iPad 2 and makes the original iPad look archaic.

The only thing I do regret, and I understand it was a necessity, is the backtracking on weight and thickness. But I suspect that gives Apple something to sell us next year. HA!

Let me just say I am very picky about Apple products. When the iPhone 4S was nothing but iPhone 4 with Siri, I was deeply disappointed. But this iPad 3 is a true iPad 3 because of the gorgeous Retina display. This is indeed a new device, not just an upgrade.

I have seen some articles claiming its just an "iPad 2S" are plain ignorant.

While I'm sure you think that way (and there's nothing wrong with that), thinking that others think the same way as you do is, well, wrong. :D

Lots of people here think that it is a major upgrade. Are there people here, like you, who aren't impressed by the new iPad? Sure, but there's a metric *ssload of people here who'll disagree.
