not completely dark (you can see light in the office from the doorway) but pretty dark and was amazed at how accurate the colors turned out. my co-worker's s10 made the carpet and chair fabric a shade of blue

I used long shutter apps on my previous phones and they never came close to what nightmode does. Night mode artificially calculates colours even when it cannot see them accurately.

see, this is a good comment. I really do think that because Apple can work with the iOS a bit more and not just via API’s, they probably are able to maximize their capabilities. Just how much , I don’t know.

You’d be surprised how opposed to third party apps some people can be. It’s also a question of convenience. Downloading an app, knowing the jargon and changing settings/aperture speeds/etc is stuff most people just don’t want to have to worry about.

So no, you’re not missing anything. It’s just more convenient that it’s built into the stock camera app with no necessary input to get great results.
My biggest issue with 3rd party apps is there’s no refund period. If I could buy an app and have 24hours to try it out, but if I delete it within that period and be refunded, I would be FAR more likely to try different apps. Many of the apps I’ve tried don’t meet my expectations and I don’t like taking a gamble with each app I purchase.

I’m with you here. It’s unbelievable that this still isn’t possible given how good Apple’s in-store return policy is.

I can tell you don’t have it, because it does work by extending the exposure time :)
There is more to it than that. It is using optical and digital stabilization, is taking multiple shots at different exposures (likely ISO too), and using computational algorithms to combine all the data into a single image. Quite similar to how the Pixel does this, however the iPhone has far more CPU / GPU horse power behind it and does all of this faster (often better) in my personal tests. I have had decent results doing long exposure in Pro Cam and similar tools with my Xs Max over the last year, however the Pixel's Night Sight typically took a sharper image with less effort overall.

Working on posting some results from the Pixel 3 and Pro Max later today.

I would love to see what you come up with. Such a great reply btw.
