After rip off eBay fees and rip off paypal fees, you will be negative if you paid full price for your phone.

Yea I heard of the fees but didn't pay close attention to it until I sold my IP5 and and got hit with about 30+ bucks in fees.

Thank you for all of your respones. I had the phone listed on eBay as a non working for parts . The phone works but has several issues (menu button sticks, sleep button does not work' back glass is cracked and the screen is cloudy from being in a bag when a can of sunscreen exploded). With all this being bad would something like swappa still work.

Ebay is the best place to offload non-working/for parts iPhones and people pay good money for them. Non-paying bidders are just part of selling on ebay (really no different from no-shows when selling on Craigslist) so notify them to let you know by the morning if they plan on paying or you'll send them the cancellation request and relist it.

I tried to sell mine on eBay. Someone utilized buy it now. Was a Nigerian scam. Very first sale. Notified eBay and reported the buyer. Trying swappa now. :( figured an unlocked 128gb would go fast, but to an actual person.

I've used eBay for years without any problems, but recently I tried to sell a MacBook and 2 separate people attempted a scam. I eventually gave up and pulled the listing. The ridiculously high fees and increasing number of scams have made eBay not worth the hassle for me.

Be very careful of newly created accounts or anyone with low amounts of feedback. Also, if someone sends payment through PayPal via echeck, there's a good chance it's a scam.

eBay isn't a bad place, in general. That said, popular electronics, especially smartphones, are a place where scamming is likely the highest.

I wouldn't necessarily avoid eBay, but I would try and sell it locally anyway. After eBay fees, PayPal fees, and shipping fees, you are likely to make the same amount, or damn near it, locally.

Keep in mind, too, that you wont have access to your funds immediately, unless you are a somewhat frequent eBay seller. I don't know what that number is (I am sure it can be looked up), but if you sell things once in a while, eBay holds the funds for a set amount of time or until the buyer has left positive feedback.

As far as eBay siding with the buyer 100% of the time, that is untrue. I will say that if the buyer has hundreds or thousands of good ratings and you have something like three, and the buyer isn't prone to opening cases with eBay, you likely have a lesser chance.

I always video tape the act of packaging and dropping off higher value items. I have been told (on these forums) that eBay and paypal don;t take video evidence. All I can say is I used it once on an iPhone 3GS sale. I have no idea if it helped (the don't tell you why they ruled in your favor), but I uploaded the video to youtube and attached a private link, among the general information such as shipping date, tracking, receipt for the product, etc.

For a while I was a powerseller and actually sold quite a few ATT unlimited plans, used/new sims, etc. Never had an issue with any of that, which is funny, because I never added tracking to any of it (obviously not for an unlimited plan, and a sim I just dropped in an envelope with a stamp). People could have claimed they never got the data and there was nothing I could have done.

I got my Verizon space grey 6 plus 128gb for 995 last week. Brand new looking but with screen protector and two cases. Great deal given the plus is out of order. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Then what is swappa boneyard for ??? Sounds like you really screwed up by talking about something you know nothing about !

All you have to do on eBay is have buyer restrictions of the highest level. In my case, if you have not paid for any item in the last 6 months, have a feedback scores less than 1 etc, don't have PayPal, don't have your address in the US, you can't bid from me.

----------

eBay worst place to sell phone. Between shipping cost, ebay's cut, paypal's cut and then hassles with buyer, more pain than worth.

Thats your experience. Millions sell successfully on eBay daily. You are right about the fees though. Then again why would you be selling an item that's readily available everywhere on ebay to make a profit? That wont work.

I wouldn't say eBay is a bad place to sell, but definitely not the best. I would try CL or if you're on Facebook there's tons of local garage and tech sales groups in a lot of areas. I've sold some stuff there as well as the wife.

I do the same but it doesn't help with non-paying bidders who have scores higher than 1. Nevertheless, the two times I got them I relisted and successfully sold.

Yeah but you weed out a lot of the non paying bidders. The most important thing is to weed out bad buyers. There is money to be made on eBay, it all depends how you got the item you are selling. If you got it at market value ebay is pointless. If you got it way below market value, ebay will give you high returns. I always load up with electronics on black Friday and sell on eBay. Last year I made $800+ after fees and shipping.

Would you guys mind sharing what the scam was? Good to know for future reference. Thanks!

Basically they emailed me saying they paid an extra $100 for the inconvenience of asking me to send the phone to Nigeria (my page said US only). Googled the address and found out it was a scam and that the eBay account that tried to buy from me was hacked.

Basically, if it says they need you to send it to x family member because they're on a business trip and then ask you to check spam for proof of payment, it's bogus. PayPal never shows up in spam and the fake email they sent didn't look close to what I normally get from them. Just use common sense and you should be fine. eBay refunded my fees the following day and cancelled everything.

I'd relist it now and like said above use a buy it now.
I wasted so much time with bidders never paying or responding to messages.
Then I had buyers trying to pull many various scams on me. I had to fight and prove my case in order to finally get my money.
Ebay is not worth the hassle, wasted time, aggravation and risk to me any more. I'll buy things there but never again will sell anything.
I had better experiences selling on amazon and swappa instead.
And paid far less fees than ebay and paypal.

These no payments are typically done by competing sellers. They drive up your price to make their auction look better and more affordable. All listings that end near their end date are usually the targets. Typical eBay scam. Make a note that you will only sell to those with history counts of >10. This doesn't stop it %100 but it helps deter some.

Basically anything Nigeria is a scam. Only thing real that came out of there is Ebola and good Vice documentaries.

I buy and sell iPhone's on eBay all the time. I'm picky on who I purchase a phone from on there, so I haven't been screwed over yet. I usually sell all of my old iPhone's on there as well. I always run into "buyers" who bid at the last minute, then never pay. It doesn't discourage me from not selling on eBay though.
