To be fair, posts with gifs/memes with little to no contextual content are posted all the time,
Perhaps, but once they're reported the moderation team acts on them.

Image only, and meme type posts are not permitted as per our rules, and if the moderation team is made aware of them by way of the report post function, or in our normal viewing of threads, we'll act on them

Fair point, it's likely the post was reported and whether or not it's acted upon is really up to the moderator who dealt with the report. It's really just subject to that person's take on it, in the end that's all it is. The headphone jack is a sore subject here so it's no surprise. That said, I appreciate the mods letting me air my reverences with this post. I've always found them to be fair that way.
It seems like in a case like this the subject (or its potential soreness or lack of it) doesn't really have much to do with it one way or another, just the type of post it is, not so much of what it's about or in relation to (although in general what it's about can certainly play a role in it as far as that topic alrsdy being discussed in other places, or something else of that nature).

They are benevolent overlords :p

Seriously though, I don't think they get enough credit for keeping this place humming along.

So a comment has less weight than a topic?

I don't think that is the issue. Like maflynn mentioned above, it would be a rule violation either way. I just think a meme/image only post in the middle of a long thread is much less likely to get either reported to or noticed by a moderator than the same post in a new thread.

To be fair, it wasn't just a meme, it had context both in the title and body. It's one thing to not agree with the post, but technically speaking it did follow the rules.

You can't fight city hall.
If the MR moderators were unreasonable, someone would be better off moving on.

They are not in the least, so why would someone fight city hall rather than enjoy the forum and be thankful for its existence? The forum is largely what someone makes of it.

True, or they wouldn't allow me to stand outside with my protest sign, you've got to give them that. :D

His post was removed. He is attempting to justify why it wasn't a violation of the rules. I am telling him that it doesn't matter what he thinks, he can't win here. That is what the saying means. You can argue your point all you want, but it won't matter in the end. You can't fight city hall.

LOL. Okay..... It's like nobody understands the saying! City Halls also have a way that a citizen can fight against them...but does it work? No. Does one person have the resources to fight it on a large scale? No. Cities are run by boards of PEOPLE. That is the flaw...people. It doesn't matter what is written down, what matters is how it is interpreted. If a board doesn't agree with you...there really isn't much you can do...unless you have money and time. That is the origin of the saying. Google it.

How is my simple comment turning into this giant thing with links and opinions? It is a simple saying! It doesn't need all this interaction. LOL

You can in an existing thread, posting a GIF isn't a way to start a new thread that plenty of others are already covering.

Actually, you can't. If a mod saw that same post in a comment, they'd remove it too based on their frivolous rule. If Eric had given context, wrote a complete thought about it, or given his opinion, his post would still be here.

Eric.

You're normally quite reasonable on here. But if you started a thread that was just a GIF, with no actual conversation behind hit, why couldn't that have gone as just another post in the dozens of headphone jack threads spanning hundreds of pages at this point?

I was a little shocked at who the OP was, definitely strange coming from one of the more reasonable posters here.

Yep, moderation always comes down to personal input and if they see it. There are plenty of better ways to mod a site, but that's what get here at MR. Reports are typically how anything gets seen/looked at by a mod.

Just curious, as this was posted in the Alternatives to iOS and iOS Devices forum and promptly moved to the Wateland for no apparent reason. It's not just this post, there seems to be many where those who don't conform to the fanboy mentality of Apple are penalized on this site.
Actually we have more haters than pro Apple....

Yep. The negativity growth here has been crazy over the last few years. This community has been slowly becoming a wasteland and nobody cares to do anything about it. I remember when I first discovered MR, everyone was so helpful and friendly. Now it's just endless, off topic comments about Apple not updating product lines or snarky overused one liners for upvotes.

Even the attitude of "Apple evangelist" has changed around here, we used to help each other, now it is a raco to who knows best...

I miss when Apple was the outsider!

Yes, why would an otherwise reasonable person question why his post, that for for all intents and purposes followed the rules, was sent to the trash?

This is truly shocking. I will do my best not to question Apple in the future. :D

Agreed. While I don't always agree with how they handle things, overall, this is a great site to visit because of the moderation. Too many other sites just are filled with attacks, profanity, etc.

People tend to forget how bit this site / forum has become, and how difficult is to see / moderate it all, it is a hard task, sometimes i too don't agree with some decision, but at the end of the day if we all could have it our way it would be a huge mess.

Kudos to the MR team, for mantaining as much as possible.

Could it be better? yes but i have seen far worse forum!!!!
