Bought the 17" Macbook pro in September last year. The hardware has been rock-solid and I've only had one freeze due to flash player.

This is even better than when I used Linux on a Lenovo even though most of those the issues I encountered there were X / graphics related.

Forums can sometimes appear to be the worse invention on the internet. They can be a blessing and curse at the same time. Somebody wants to buy something and they come here and read about SOME legit complaints and all the other OCD complaints and the person gets turned off. Nevermind that there probably 100 times more satisfied customers, this forum that represents less than 1/10th of 1% of Apple's customers is enough to decide the fate of the OP's purchase.
What did people do before there was the internet to read complaints on? They used either consumer reports (which is not the best source) or they just bought and found out for themselves which is what the OP should do. He's only torturing himself by allowing MR and other forums to sway him. Wow, MR should charge for all the power it has over Apple's future.

Just because you haven't had issues doesn't mean they don't exist.

The Apple store "genius" told me that he couldn't guarantee that my replacement macbook pro wouldn't have the same problem (misalignment)... sure enough it did...

The consensus around here is that Apple's quality control is slipping...

I don't think he's implying the problems don't exist, just that such problems are less prevalent than forums such as this would suggest.

Cheers,

Please make sure you fully read posts before you respond to them, either that or make sure you're responding to the right person. Nowhere in my post you quoted did I mention anything about me not having problems, nor did I say that problems didn't exist. In fact I wrote that people do have legit issues but I guess you conveniently overlooked that part.

I was responding to you.

You made some very questionable assumptions with no data to back them up, saying that the ratio of happy to unhappy customers is 100:1.

Seemed to me like you were almost completely discounting the reports of Macbook Pro problems on this forum, dismissing a significant portion as complains by people who have a mental disorder. You seem to think that these complains are pretty worthless, likening them to "the worst part of the internet" , to me they are very significant because the opinions of knowledgeable mac users are likely to be found on these forums - and these opinions/observations are not as statistically insignificant as you make them out to be.

I was not happy with these assumptions, so that is why I made my post.

edit: to be clear I have no problem with you, it seems I did not do a good enough job elaborating.

Maybe

No one but Apple can answer that question, and of course, they are not going to do it ;)
People don't usually post to forums when things go right while people with problems do it, although some don't even know they have a problem and think it's their problem...

I have cancelled my purchase due to the freezing issue, which is a major one (and it's funny how major problems with Apple computers cannot be reproduced... they are always random :). While I'm sure many units won't have this problem, I'm not willing to do the quality control for free :), that's Apple's responsibility...
But you get what you pay for... Apple is not a synonym for quality anymore... blame the iProducts ;) and consumerism.

as it has been mentioned before, only the people who have experienced a problem will post, you won't see people starting threads about how their macbooks being perfect (well maybe a few)

+there's more people buying macs these days than ever before and that's a real statistic (roughly 50%~ or something of entering college freshman)
there's bound to be more people complaining about problems

i couldn't agree more.
I've just recently heard a quote in marketing class.
"Bad information travels faster"

Only a few people that are fine with their products will talk about it. But most people who makes bad experiences will talk about it somewhere.

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies.
I've decided to just go for it and order my MBP 13" :D

No doubt if I do end up with a dud you'll be hearing from me, but hopefully all I'll be posting about is how fantastic my new toy is!

Thanks again. :)

Hi all,

Why is it when I've finally waited for the BTS promotion, got together enough money and I'm just about to click the "buy" button that I start to read seemingly more than usual "problems with 2010 MBP" threads on the boards  :(

Is it just me being paranoid and worrying that I'm gonna get a dud and regret spending my hard earned cash, or does Apples quality control seem to be slipping?

I know that on boards like this you always get people with problems (no insult intended!:D) but it just seems to be more recently.

I guess I just need a bit of reassurance before hitting that button, so please let me know of some good experiences of 2010 MBP's (13" in particular).

Thanks in advance.

My i7 I got last week has been totally fine, bulletproof. However, my Unibody I got in 2008 originally was replaced twice, both my first and first models had thumb prints or marks behind the glass screen!!
So in my experience it's the exact opposite.

The 13" is awesome as always, no issues. Remember that most people who have no issues don't even come to these boards, they are busy using their computer :)

No problems

My 17" MBP i7 has been performing flawlessly.:) No complaints. No problems with upgrades. Very Happy. Will be adding Apple Care.:D

Thanks for the replies so far. :)

Still seems to be a 50:50 split on good and bad experiences so-far though :(

Am I best waiting a couple of months for them to sort out all these niggles or is it not going to be any difference in that short space of time?

Have to say I am itching to get my hands on the mac now though, although I could wait a bit if worth while.

Thoughts?

Thanks again.

You're WAY off base if you're basing your buying decision on Macrumors comments. Get real, this is THE Apple bitch-n-moan web site and the comments here do not represent the typical user experience.

cheers from reality

I'd say a user who isn't out LOOKING for problems is going to be a lot happier. If a tree falls and no one's around...er...if you wouldn't have known it was a problem, then is it really? Glad you went ahead and got it; enjoy.

I haven't said any of the sort or made any assumptions of the sort. You've really got me lost how you came up with all of this, sounds like you're purposely picking a fight with me?

my screen goes black for 3-5 seconds i believe this is some power invertor in the screen. and my hdd has needed 3 disk utility repairs which is more than normal for a new machine. but apart from that amazing. haha. ill take it in for repair.. its not a huge issue.
