It is interesting how reviews for any product, restaurant, job company and more, there are always tons of negative reviews and I always do think.. what about the people who are happy. My dad was always the type of guy who would compliment someone if they did a great job or talk to someone if there were issues. But he taught me that I do not just complain when things are bad, you compliment when things are good. So I get that there are people who love the 17 MBP and some who are against it.

I will look into the 2015 MBP. It would save me some money, that is true and less issues, but there is that part of me that wants the New laptop. Current one on the market. Of course they could come out with an updated one right after I purchase it and that is fine, but I think when it comes time to purchase, I will go with the 2017. Unless reports come out saying that they they are worse than everyone thought!- Then 2015 MBP it is.

Yes there a ton of negative reviews out there, but everyone’s opinion is different. I bought a 2016 MP touch bar early last year and honestly couldn’t be happier. I’m on it 50% of the time as my iPad Pro takes up the other 50. But I use the MP similar to what you will be needing for and to do minor editing pictures. I’d recommend the 2017 for sure. Even if you wanted the 2016 model you can great deals on a brand new one right now. Just my two sense. But I’ll recommend it

I understand that reviews often are more negative because complaints tend to be louder than compliments. Nevertheless, there are times when good companies release defective products.....it happpens. Is the new MBP keyboard design defective and prone to failure? These are very expensive computers, and the keyboard is an essential part of a laptop, so it needs to be right. The evidence is anecdotal because no official statistics are available from Apple on keyboard failures. One of the reasons people come to these forms is read about products and user experiences before they make a purchase. So, while not scientific, user complaints and input may be all that is available in some situations.

Based upon what I have read on this and other forums, I would not buy a new rMB or MBP until I was convinced the problem had been fixed.

But... the repair not a simple matter of just replacing the keyboard. On the new design, the ENTIRE TOPCASE must be replaced. The cost runs $700+ -- to fix ONE key!

Problem with this is.... even on the original Unibody MacBook Pros from 2008-2012 it was also a 'whole top case unibody full keyboard' job as far as Apple was concerned. Even though you could easily do it yourself and it was physically possible, it was impossible to obtain new, genuine parts from Apple who have a closed off supply of parts (not by accident I'd say). And with a 90 day warranty on official, costly Apple repairs it's sometimes too risky to go for it. So the very valid point you're making about the current MBP applies to all former models too. Sadly.

I'm not going to say that I regret my purchase, but I do wish a few more improvements were made between the 2016 and 2017 models. My (numerous) 2016 MacBook Pro(s) had keyboard issues and sleep/wake issues. My 2017 makes the infamous popping sound as it heats up, and more recently one my my USB-C Ports has decided it no longer wants to hold the cable like it used to.

Unless I'm mistaken, to fix the popping sound, Apple will have to replace the top case / keyboard/ trackpad / touch bar / battery / (and possibly the display) and then to fix the USB-C port it's essentially a logic board replacement as well.

What's left to change?

I am in the same situation - have been going back and forth between 2015 and 2017 for almost a month and even though I did like 2017 I went with 2015. I don't know - last thing I want is to deal with faulty keyboard etc. I used 2017 for a week and a half and one key became less responsive, but canned air worked. Nevertheless it did make me think twice. I have finally shipped 2017 back to apple and kept 2015 with dGPU, which was hard to catch and I did. I guess that was part of the reason, as if I returned it it would be very hard to get another one. Apple was kind enough to let me keep it and test for more than 2 weeks. The other part is that 2015 is $700 less. But still, the main question is - do I want to pay so much money for 2015 model? For my needs it is going to be fine. I tested 4k video editing on 2015 - it works good for me, the only thing is that the fans kick in pretty quick. I might have made a mistake and should have taken a risk and go with 2017? Hard to tell.

Interesting, I have been checking apple refurb page, just for fun and saw 2015's today, with 500gb storage. It took 15 mins for them to be gone. It does look like people are hunting for these models.
