2020 Redesign with 10th Gen CPU and improved dGPU, to me the 16" is a stopgap due to the significant negativity the 2016 MBP design has brought to Apple. Might be wrong, equally think the 2020 MBP will be the One...

Yes there's always bigger & better around the corner, equally Apple has been rightfully pissed on from a great height due to poor design since the 2016 MBP launched. 2020 Apple can correct the course or reinforce...

Q-6

I can't see them redesigning the entire laptop in 2020 if that is what you mean. IMO, an incremental update/ refinement is more welcome than a bunch of new design changes that lead to similar problems over the last few years. If thermals are better and the keyboard is solid, and they're giving more for the same price, that is good with me.

No track record with the updated keyboard - one would hope its an improvement but its new...
Gen1 product and make no bones, this is a gen1 product
Not needing the machine, i.e., can wait.
T2 chip is still being used and still can produce stability issues.
Not using 10nm chips, so performance isn't going to be that much of a bump.

On that last point some of the GB scores look pretty good. Remember the RAM is faster and if they have improved the thermals maybe the chips can run at higher clock speed for longer.
I guess there are not enough scores in for a stable estimation however.

I should note that performance potentially will be noticeably more due to

1. Better thermal solution
3. Apple allows CPU to draw additional ~12W power than current gen (hence the upgraded 96W adapter).

Then there is the GPU/RAM upgrades which will only add to the performance.

Will be interesting to see benchmarks as in theory this will not just blow away the 15” despite no CPU upgrade, but also XPS 15/X1E etc.

Have to wait and see...

I think people expecting some big overhaul redesign in 2020 may end up being disappointed. In tech in general, big massive leaps are kinda over. Especially for ones that stick to a yearly release cycle. The tech isn't advancing quick enough to facilitate these big crazy overhauls people are expecting anymore other than just design changes for the sake of it. I think things like what Apple did with the 16" MBP is what we'll see more of. I think things are going to stay iterative for a while. Maybe in 2020 they'll add Wifi 6, or whatever the next available new CPU will be or stuff like that, but i don't think it's going to be anything insane or game changing (or even a radical visual design change) like some are hoping for. Even if they make the ARM switch in 2020, i think that transition period is going to be slow and painful unless Apple knocks it out of the park on the first chip and is also working magic behind the scenes to make sure software developers are all making ARM versions of their apps and they have the time to work out any associated issues that may come with figuring that out.

As good as the 16inch MacBook Pro is I think it might age quicker then we would all like. Within 18-24 months you could be comparing it to a new macbook with:
  • Mini LED or OLED display
  • USB4
  • FaceID
  • WiFi 6 (802.11ax)
That's not even considering a possible transition to ARM. Personally I'm using a 2016 MacBook Pro with a recently replaced keyboard and plan on waiting it out.

I forgot about Mini LED/OLED and USB4. Those would be compelling reasons to wait for me personally.

They might innovate around the touch bar in 2020.

I think the biggest argument against the new MBP is the price. Looking at the specs of comparative laptops from other makers, it is apparent that, even allowing for superior components and manufacturing standards on the Macs, the profit margins on these machines must be obscene. I understand that Apple are very keen to increase the Mac user base and if so, the best way they could do this is to reduce their profit margins to more reasonable percentages. This would make the product a more attractive purchase to non-Mac users. I will probably wait until next year and buy a refurbished ex-demo 16" machine. I would love to get rid of the keyboard on my current 2016 15" MBP, where I am now on the 3rd replacement and even that one, new just last week, is still making multiple keystrokes and that is with the Unshaky App running, to prevent multiple characters.
