Has anyone with a moobook tried using it in a library? If I can't even browse the internet at the library at my university without distracting other students...

Are there really Macbooks that do not whine or moo at all?

My macbook doesn't moo on the battery unless I hella force the temperature up by running hella apps and stuff. I have yet to try it on AC tho (Just got a replacement today for my old moobook. This one moos quieter, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet on AC.

Anyways, I had a listen to that soundclip of the moo, and I definitely don't have it, although in a toungue in cheek kind of way, it is amusing. That sounds pretty close to a real moo, if you ask me.
I've even ripped CD's for an hour straight..definitely don't get that.
I think I have an early machine too. Mine got to CompUSA on the 18th, I think.
Well, mine makes a very slight hissing/whining noise when idle. Not audible unless the room is near silent, though I must admit.
It also produces the 'moo' sounds at idle, which are audible and very annoying. Particularly distracting in a quiet library.
In addition, anywhere near load, the fans rev up as if the thing is about to take off. Something as mundane as an video conferencing with iChat causes the fans to gradually rev up to full blast.
Far louder than my previous PowerBook G4 1.67GHz ever was at full load, or even my Dell D600. Yes, I realise with iChat the CPU is encoding video/audio in realtime, but this thing is loud.
It also trips into thermal panic and throttles when hitting full load. Even with the fans on full blast, it isn't enough to cool the thing down it seems.
Suffice to say, a replacement is already on its way.

I got a white 1.83 MacBook today and it does not have the moo but does have a slight bzzzzzzz sound coming from near the magsafe plug on the side. It really is not that loud and something I can tolerate for sure. ALL 5 macbooks on display in the Apple store when I was there last made the very same sound.
I'm gonna load windows on this thing tonight and see if it still does it. My guess is that it will go away running windows. I posted earlier that I honestly think Tiger is the culprit of this buzzing sound. My G5 dual 1.8 AND dual 2.0 were silent with Panther and had a very high pitch noise during idle after getting Tiger. VERY similar to the MB and MBP. Since I have no other issues with the MB I'm going to keep it, love it and wait for some type of firmware update / leapord in 2007 to shut this thing up 🙂 I'm just glad I don't have the moo 😱

I just installed QuietMBP on my MacBook and it did the job. I can't hear anything now and it uses almost no system resources. I have not noticed any increase in temperature or a noticeable drop in battery life either. It looks like we have a winner for me. The problem is obviously within Tiger and the way it handles the idle of the processor... same exact problem as with the Dual G5s when Tiger came out. Oh well, it is gone with this app so I'm content.
I also used QuietMBP on the MacBook that I had. However this was one of the main reasons I got the moo! Quieting the whine caused the temp to increase, and stay, around 68°C. It used around 8% CPU, which is a lot I thought, and running it also caused the MacBook to warm up quite a bit more than if I just left it whining. Daniel Jalkut (the author of QuietMBP) reckoned it cost him around 15-20 mins of battery life on a MBP.

The whine can be fixed by giving up very little of my system resources and without much of a hit on the battery life so that I'm ok with that. On another note, I can't get over how solid this thing feels! It has a much better feel to it than the iBook did, IMO. Glad to hear yours is good to go man! I have only heard my fans kick on once today and I have been using it all day. Also, after hours of use the heat is not bad at all. It is on par with the Dell Latitude I had before this. However, compared to the IBM Thinkpad T43 it does get hotter. Then again, that was a single core processor on a slower bus so the story could be very different now with the T60.
Finally, mine has a very slight vibration to it while in use. Does anyone else have this? I think it is the hard drive I'm feeling since it is located below the palm rest. Thanks for the input 🙂

Well it looks like I spoke too soon. After a day of it being silent it has just started the moo like crazy. It has been going for about 5 mins now 😡 I was just at the Apple store today on my lunch and had my macbook with me. I asked a genius to check out the sound but everyone claimed they could not hear it. Now with this moo I'm going to have to put my foot down and make them give me an exchange... what a pain!

lol chrispy, the one I got for a replacement is mooing as well. It's going back soon. It's jsut such a hassle dealing with the mac geniuses at the apple store.

I may just use my fully loaded Dell Latitude D620 that I am getting from my employer and make a partition on that for myself for awhile. WillMak, I really hope this is true!! It sounds too good to be true!! Can you please check your friends Macbook again, just put it in a completely silent room, open photobooth and wait 5 minutes? If it doesn't moo then he can consider himself really lucky!WillMak said:

All of them on display in the Apple Store had the whine (could hear it even in the store) and two of them I have had so far do it too. To quiet the whine you then have to deal with the moo it seems. It is so unfortunate because other than that these things rock! I just can't deal with sounds like that tho. High pitches and repetitive noises do my head in.
