I really hope I'm wrong, but do you have any reason to believe any significant feature may come out between now and June/July (when the next phone come out)?

...There's really no precedent since 2.0 came out for real features to be added.

Do you have any reason to think there *won't* be significant features between now and June?

There were features added between 1.0 and 2.0. I can't remember them all now, but the location feature on google maps was one.

IMO apple is just being slow at this point because it's better to be slow and have people be a little annoyed than to rush it out, crash people's phones, and have everyone really annoyed. They have publicly stated that push notifications and copy&paste are on their list of things to do, and I imagine that once they are ready we'll see them. There's no reason to deliberately hold them back until 3.0.

Why give away for free something which could be a major new feature for the next version?

apple could impliment a feature like the wallpaper just have an option t set as background. that way any picture could be used.

my 1.50$

Re-read my post, then re-read your own post above. You answered your question yourself. Of course, there was a lot of stuff added between 1.0 and 2.0, but nothing significant has been added in any of the 2.x updates. So, logic would follow that we won't be seeing anything significant until 3.0.

Speaking of the location feature, does this use your voice minutes or is it part of the Data service? I ask because doesn't it use Cell locations for the information?

I tried backgrounder with AIM and no badges popped up when I got a message. I take it this is because AIM is not set up to do so?

I do the same. All you have to do is go back to like the buddy list or a previous page and back to the conversation. Works well other than that.

Now taking in to consideration all the comments in this thread, it could be possible that Apple is waiting for the 2009 iPhone to add features like push notifications & apps running in the background.

Both would be good features that could be added to a newer iPhone (software and/or hadware) which would entice people to upgrade, along with other small things like a better camera and so on.

You're prolly right. They likely have background notifications developed already, but its just not running as smoothly as they would like on the current iPhone. Therefore, they likely have decided to just roll it out with the next iPhone - which will probably be able to handle them better.

I have two thoughts...

1) What if "By September" meant in an SDK form, not public? I'm almost certain that Scott Forsall never said released to the public in September. The SDK version with Push came in July, which would have been early and then they took it away. Hence, they never lied or messed up and now are just holding it.

2) They've been holding it due to the Steve health issues and will announce it as a big announcement next month along with a 32GB iphone.

Thoughts?

that doesnt even make any sense. so you're saying the proposed new 2009 iphone will have push notifications while the iphone 3g won't? push notification doesn't even have anything to do with iphone hardware anyway its clearly server side on their end.

Sure, the new iPhone will have 512MB of RAM, and thus can secretly run apps in the background.

Apple will tell no one, and pretend that they're actually using the push notification service.

:D

I just watched the WWDC Address again and regarding the Push Notification Service, Scott Forstall said this:
"This will be available in September, but starting next month, we're going to be seeing developers, so you can get your hands on it, early."

Yeah, that would have been neat! What's the last thing that Apple released on time when they set a time frame?
