What is the motivation for Apple to push the lightning connector so aggressively?

Make more money selling more expensive cables? That's kind of a wash since new devices include the cable in the box.

There's not that much if any fragmentation being caused by it especially since its a USB on the other end of both.

Help push 3rd party manufactures to lightning? Not really a benefit to push your competitors to make better products. Regardless there are adapters.

This is something I don't see why force it when time will naturally and inexpensively take care of it itself.

I'm pretty sure that Apple take a hefty sum each year from accessory royalties.
By pushing everyone to Lightning and getting people to buy new docks, Apple makes money.

Every time you see the 'Made for iPhone' sticker, some of that money is going to Apple.

Also, just for convenience - they bash Android for the software fragmentation, would be no different here apart from it's hardware, not software.

It could just be an iPhone 5 in a cheaper shell, this way they can sell it for a cheaper price and have better margins by using cheaper materials and just discontinue the older models.

So there's basically no new cars ever because they are just updated models of the 1910 model T?

And everyone knows that the iPhone 5S will be the same materials, same size, everything really.

They might put a new chip in it, but that's it. But it'll sell though.

Didn't think of it that way. That makes sense though.
