Assume if you're on a budget, is the 6.1" rumored iPhone worth considering?

I'm in a strange spot myself. Kind of on a tight budget but I currently do not have a smartphone at all but I do have a very well used 4 year old iPad Air 2 (battery has lost about 20%) and I've been considering replacing it with a larger model iPhone (possibly the rumored new Plus model). In this day and age I could really use a smartphone and while its 4 years old my iPad Air 2 has been serving me well as a laptop replacement (still have a windows gaming desktop though).

The talk of the plus model got me thinking maybe I should (since I don't use a keyboard with the ipad anyway) replace the iPad with a larger sized smartphone. I know the plus will be expensive but I'm not sure if the 6.1 inch "budget" iPhone will be large enough. I'm in a wait and see pattern until they announce specs and I can see them side by side.

My wife upgrades every other year and her past two phones have been a 6 Plus and 7 Plus. Will likely get the 6.1” iPhone for her.

Seems like a great phone, especially with A12 and dual-SIM capability (for certain regions).

Unlike the iPhone X, the 6.1" doesn't use a stacked logic board. So, it's less likely to overheat like the A11.

The only downside is the 326 PPI Retina "only" display.

Why would I downgrade from the X?

This is where this phone is going to be odd. The CPU and GPU will be upgraded from the X... the screen tech may technically be a “downgrade” but I’m not sure if we will be able to consider this 6.1” phone a downgrade from the X.

TBH this 6.1” phone is the one I’m most interested in just because I wasn’t to see how it compares to the X.

Not to mention the updated Intel modem.

For A12, Charlie at SemiAccurate is expecting a 50% increase for single threaded performance.

This exactly. I’m more about performance then anything else. LCD is fine with me. If this phone’s performance is 50% better than the A11 then count me in.

I'm interested in the 6.1 if the display is the one from Japan Display that has been touted as superior to current LCD tech. If the difference is small, then it may make sense. I worry about OLED and burn-in - although I am probably overstating any danger of it happening.

Screen resolution aside, I agree w/ it seeming like a nice offering.

326 PPI with that much screen area is pretty lame in 2018. Other than that, it seems like a nice offering for its price point.

I don't understand when people say that.

The 6.1" has a higher PPI than iPhone X. This is due to iPhone X using a Pentile pixel arrangement.

The 6.1" has the same PPI as the 6.5" model.

Only the existing Plus series phones have higher PPI.

I would if it had the dual camera. I have the 8+ now and do t think I could go back in that department. I’ll probably go with the 5.8 model

If the leaked screen resolution is correct, why would you want to buy a phone with in effect a much worst resolution then the iPhone 8 4.7”? And then it may not have 3D Touch either and limited storage options.
May as well get a second hand or much reduced X or the new Plus. Or even the 8 Plus

Because it has the same PPI.

I have the 8 Plus - I think Apple is targeting this product to people like me, and those that own 6/7 series phones. The issue I am struggling with is that based on what has been leaked so far, I don’t see the 6.1” as much of an upgrade over an 8+.

I’ve got a 6S currently so I’m definitely tempted by the 6.1. All depends on specs - eg if it has 1st gen FaceID but the new 5.8 has a 2nd gen, that might sway me.

The 6.1 LCD phone is not an option for me, simply because I do want the OLED display, larger display with the 6.5 iPhone and bigger battery. However, I think the 6.1 LCD iPhone will do well for the price point and it will support Face ID in a new form factor, but obviously there will be a clear differentiation between the 5.8/6.5 models.

Haha are you kidding? Go analyze the iPhone 8’s display as close as you can get to it without loosing focus and then the X and tell me which one is sharper. 458 PPI PenTile with a ton of anti-aliasing makes the X display almost as sharp as the Galaxy S9 at 570 PPI.

Yes, a 6.1” device with the same PPI as a 4.7” device will look worst overall. Plus it’s cheap to do this as the old Plus at least has a 5.5” 1080P screen!

You don't understand what PPI means do you? In the above example the 6.1" device will look identical to the 4.7" device.
