Yes, a 6.1” device with the same PPI as a 4.7” device will look worst overall. Plus it’s cheap to do this as the old Plus at least has a 5.5” 1080P screen!

Lmao. If it has the same ppi, then it’ll not look worse because it has the same ppi.

Maybe you mean if the 6.1” has the same resolution as the 4.7” it’s gonna look worse. Luckily the 6.1” has a higher resolution that’s resulting the same ppi as the 4.7” iPhones.

Why would I downgrade from the X?

Why would I downgrade from the 8 Plus?

The lower screen resolution, the single camera, same RAM, 2x2 MIMO... I could keep my 8 Plus. The only move I would be making is for the full screen with notch and FaceID.

I do believe it’s a great move for anyone coming from the 6/6s models, anyone looking to return to iOS, or anyone on a budget. I’m actually curious to see how the colors will look in aluminum, especially the blue. I’ve been wanting a blue phone since forever. It’s the one thing I’m kind of upset about not getting with the 6.5.

You don't understand what PPI means do you? In the above example the 6.1" device will look identical to the 4.7" device.

May have the same PPI but I bet you the 4.7” looks sharper due to being smaller.
And yeah I do. Pixels per inch. It’s a cheap move by Apple IF true.

Mmmk you go and look at it once it’s out then.

Haha are you kidding? Go analyze the iPhone 8’s display as close as you can get to it without loosing focus and then the X and tell me which one is sharper. 458 PPI PenTile with a ton of anti-aliasing makes the X display almost as sharp as the Galaxy S9 at 570 PPI.

It's well established the 8 Plus has a sharper display compared to the X

Seems like you missed the conversation last year discussing PenTile vs. RGB stripe.

Below is 8 Plus (left) vs. X (right). Anyone can see the lack of sharpness on the edge of the icon and the screen-door effect due to lower PPI on the X.

Do you also believe there's more cake if it's cut into smaller pieces?

Try this.

Make your display smaller by covering half the phone with your hand. Does the display become sharper?

If so, you should contact an eye care professional immediately.

Big ios fan here but for the money no way save a extra 200 bucks and purchase a iphone x or even a Galaxy s9
2018 is old skool for LCD.

Well, no need to be rude, I’m sure also we don’t all have 20/20 vision like you? Perhaps you should think about that before making a comment like that eh..

I see your hung in on the PPI also. No point discussing it further really. You buy your 6.1” and enjoy it.

I’m not sure why the need to have incessant arguing over PPI and screen resolution, just choose what you want for an iPhone model, everyone has different preferences in price point, features, display, ect.

The 6.1 LCD iPhone will do well, its set up *not* to fail with a cheaper price point, Face ID in a new form factor and a 6 inch display.

Absolutely not. Looking at the videos of the dummy models, this phone looks huge. It’ll be a real shock to a lot of people coming from the 4.7” models, leaving the only real option to be the more expensive 5.8” X version 2 (perhaps this was deliberate)

For people on more of a budget, surely the standard 4.7” iPhone 6S/7/8 is a much better buy than a de-featured brick that will still be pretty expensive. Don’t get the thinking behind this weird 6.1” iPhone at all

This has nothing to do with 20/20 vision.

PPI is a system of measurement with a base unit (inches). This means there is no scaling factor to worry about. Whether you have a 1" display or 100" display, the sharpness is the same. Your perceived sharpness may vary depending on your viewing distance. That viewing distance does not change with a 4.7" or a 6.1" display.

I guess because of the oddity Apple uses with the retina term and the inability to stick with traditional resolutions with each of its iPhone offerings? The 6.1" LCD will be a very safe product in terms of feature offerings and compromises. With 3D Touch being redone or removed, it might be the more equipped for future updates as well. A 5 year update cycle might be realistic with the budget iPhone, which is a very sound purchase if I intend to use a phone for 2-3 years at the very least with an option to hold onto it much longer.

I don't want to go back to Android since iOS works better for me. But if I have to? My Apple Watch will go on sale and I will have to get something with pure Android, like Android One or a Pixel.

The 6.1 LCD iPhone is exactly what Apple needed to do because the starting price point for the 2017 5.8 iPhone X is simply too high for consumers to want to spend that on a smart phone, which only would increase their monthly payments. If you look at Apple’s competitors, they’re all offering 6 inch iPhone smart phones, but Apple needs to see the Phone market as a *whole*, and not just with an exclusive premium model like the iPhone X.

Yeah, their positioning makes a lot of sense. However, from my consumer standpoint? There are plenty of compromises to consider: network connectivity (2x2 MIMO meaning possibly no band 71 coverage in the 6.1 LCD model), obscure display resolution on a large screen, first gen Face ID, etc.

I would gladly prefer to get a FaceID and iPhone X form factor even with a LCD display if it means saving $ over the 2018 X because it's way beyond my budget. Unless T-Mobile offers the X for half off w/ trade in of the 8+, no way to consider spending that much.

I would like to spend like $300 or less to upgrade my 8+ to a new form factor though. Gotta taper my demands with the resolutions though to say the least.

For me personally, I don’t want any sacrifices with a cheaper iPhone, I want the best of the best that’s offering an OLED display, camera capabilities, second GEN Face ID if that’s offered, etc. But I think for the average consumer, they don’t see the technical specifications like we do, because were are more tech oriented, where the average consumer just see’s the new form factor, Face ID and a the biggest contributor being thecheaper price point to top it all off.

Really, it depends what somebody wants to spend, but obviously that’s why they have a difference in models that have different features and hardware specs.

Nope. My iPhone 7 is still kicking along just fine. Maybe next year I’ll upgrade.

If I had the $, I would go X+. I have no choice but to go LCD if I want 2018 iPhone sadly.

Wow. Big frickin deal. Like anyone is going to notice that during normal use. I can’t even see the screen door effect on my X from 2” away. I didn’t even know it was there.

You know what I can see? Washed out gray blacks on the 8 Plus. I would gladly trade some microscopic pixelation over that compromise.

I read every article there was on the X’s AMOLED display. Go to settings and get as psychically close to the display as possible when analyzing text. Now back to the 8 Plus. You’re telling me the 8 Plus RGB is sharper?

“The iPhone X uses Sub-Pixel Rendering, which further improves image sharpness because the individual Red, Green and Blue Sub-Pixels are treated as independent addressable image elements and are not bound together into fixed Pixels, so the closest sub-pixel is used when rendering the image. In some cases Sub-Pixel Rendering can make the screen appear to have up to 3 times the resolution of traditional Pixel Rendering.”

458 PPI for Green and white, 324 PPI for red and blue. Sub-pixel rendering and anti-aliasing makes the X the sharpest display Apple makes.

The picture says a thousand words.

Probably. I’m fine with an LCD screen and hopefully they bump the resolution up to 1080p.
