I'm in contract with T-Mobile, but I will break it in order to go with AT&T and get the iPhone. There's other benefits for me, too, though.. T-Mobile service is terrible at my new home, and my roommate with AT&T has no trouble whatsoever talking indoors. I've got to stand on the doorstep to get decent reception.

Yes, but the main thing is that Cingular is claiming that you have to be UPGRADE ELIGIBLE in order to get the iPhone. So ALL AT&T/Cingular customers that are in a contract and not upgrade eligible would have to pay hundreds more to buy the phone unsubsidized or pay the termination fee (and I don't know if this would allow you to keep your number). I'm eligible in November and I'm ticked off. I don't know why I can't buy it now and sign a 2-year contract that will start when this current one ends in April. Win-Win.

I'm still amazed that anybody can be confused about this. Unless & until Apple/AT&T make an announcement or change to the contrary, here's the pricing/contract deal, as it has been since January:

New customers
4GB: $499 with new two-year contract
8GB: $599 with new two year contract
Not sold without contract

Existing customers
4GB: $499 with two-year contract extension
8GB: $599 with two year contract extension
Not sold without contract

Every statement, documentation, or SteveNote slide from either company thus far has not said anything beyond this. Everything else at this point is pure speculation, so the panties should become unbunched. 😎

2 Cingular business reps over the phone and both a corporate and non-corporate Cingular stores. To test this, go to Cingular.com and choose any store; ask them if someone who is not upgrade eligible will be able to get the iPhone on Friday with a contract extension that starts either when the phone is bought or when their current contract expires. Then call any of the customer service numbers for Cingular and ask the same question.

Since AT&T hasn't released iPhone specifics, I wouldn't trust what any of the sales people tell you.

Once AT&T has made an official announcement, it will be linked to by every Mac site and gadget blog.

Until then, it's all rumor.

I've been with AT&T (Cingular) for a couple years now and will resign to get the iPhone.
