Thoughts of the possibilty of the iPhone's screen being longer but not wider?

  • Hey, as long as the screen is diagonally larger, the lack of extra width doesn't bother me.

  • I agree, the screen should be BOTH wider and longer than the current iPhone 4S screen!

  • I just want the screen to stay at 3.5 inches. Anything bigger than that is something I won't use!

Like steve jobs said. Its all about the software wrap around a great hardware! Thats what drive me and others, and not the other way around! Thats how it was for the first ipod. The softwares around it made it popular.

Im sure if i was looking for the best cpu biggest screen i would have been with samsung or htc. Trust me i use lots of smartphone and os, and every single time i always have to have my ios device as my main.

Of course… 70% of smartphones sales in Japan last quarter were iPhone. If I knew the numbers for other countries I would say that as well, but I don't.

You will have to provide proof because this is the latest i found from February and it dont support your claim. Article is from April 24th, data from end of February. Android was almost double the mobile market there.

Also in 2011, this says iPhone was the best selling PHONE in Japan but Android has 69% of smartphones sold there. In other words, the iPhone since it has only ONE phone ....it sells well but Android is still kicking its butt and the reason it isnt #1 is because they sell many different phones so though not one particular brand is the best selling there, as a whole, iOS is getting doubled up in usage.

In Spain, Android accounts for over 72% of smartphones sales. Apple does well but clearly it is doing the best here in the USA.

Kantar Worldpanel: Android Dominates Smartphone Sales Overall; In U.S. iOS Closing In

New figures out today from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech — a market research division of WPP — show that Android is, overall, continuing to make large gains in the smartphone market, accounting for a majority of sales in the 12 weeks that ended March 18.

Drilling down, Android is doing particularly well in some places. In Spain, Android is the platform to beat. It accounted for a 72.3 percent of smartphone sales in the period — the highest proportion among the markets analyzed by Kantar. But Android’s domination is not across the board: in the U.S., sales of devices based on Google’s platform actually declined by about 6.6 percent over last year and accounted for 47.6 percent of all smartphone sales in the country. Apple, meanwhile, saw its percentage of sales in the U.S. go up by 12.8 percent to account for 43 percent of all sales. Kantar also says that while now the majority of consumers in the UK and Australia now own smartphones, in other markets that it analyses, the tipping point has yet to be reached.

I hope apple released the front panel as a way of seeing how we react and are reading this thread.... same width is too small. Same length sentences meaning constant scrolling down, agree with everything the op has said.

Apple will make it wider at some point and all the devs will have to update their apps so why not do it now while they have to update their apps for a new screen resolution anyway? Such long cyclles for 1cm taller and then another few years for a 1cm wider is just silly.

I don't trust Apple, I trust Steve Jobs.

Look at what happened to Apple the last time he left.

Not the same thing. The first time he didn't leave he was forced out by a Board that thought Apple should be competing with Microsoft and was taken over by a guy who used to sell soft drinks not software.

This time Steve hand picked his successor and design team and gave them full control. He also left a roadmap of products.

I have a fear about Apple's future 5 years and out but not products that are released within a year of his passing.

I'd rather it be wider than taller - its gonna look strange if they just make it taller

I think this lengthened screen might be their first hardware blunder if it goes through.

...if you don't count the glass back and antennagate as blunders, that is...

Why? Every other phone has 16x9, now the iPhone will, and all you all can do is bit&h?

What about my apps!

I'm really not excited to have to go back and adjust the incredibly in-depth after effects composition I have as my app intro to move important things away from the edge for when I have to use UIViewContentModeScaleAspectFill to avoid black bars...

I've been using the HTC One X for about a month now, which is a 4.7 inch device. All I can say is that the width is not good. Holding your phone in one hand can be extremely difficult at times. Increasing height won't interfere with your hand position, but width will.

I'd rather have wider opposed to taller too if we only had one choice.

Found this on the net

I'm glad people are writing about this. Taller alone is not a big improvement

Maybe for somebody less than 5 feet tall.

Dont believe rumors till we see the actual phone..

dont you guys remember up to a few weeks before the 4S was announced, everyone on the web was coming out with photos and new cases and covers for a total redesign of the next iphone? none were accurate and the phone physically was exactly the same as the 4. wont belive any rumors until Apple shows it to us.

You're missing an option on your poll... Those of us who don't care so much about screen size, but DO care about the phone size. By keeping the length and width close to it's current size, the next phone will still fit easily in pockets and be easily used with one hand.

I care far more about that than adding extra width for the screen. Besides, they could just about keep the phone exactly the same size as it currently is and still have a 4" a screen....that's what I'm hoping for.
This.

That's why I would be alright with it being even a little taller, just not wider. Will still fit comfortably in the hand and the pocket.

Now I'll still buy it if it's wider AND taller, I just won't have an issue with it if it's just taller.

I'm 6'4. I used the Thunderbolt for two weeks. Much more difficult to hold and navigate than the iPhone.

There were never any leaks regarding the supposed tapered iphone 5. The only thing that appeared was an Apple 'design document' that all the case designs and website renderings were based on, including the ones commissioned by Macrumors. There was never any evidence that a total redesign actually existed - in contrast to the various part leaks that appeared for the 4S.

This time we have plenty of evidence that a new design is in the works; the altered home button, new internal layout, the new frame with moved headphone jack, altered speaker grills & smaller dock connector, the elongated metal backplate and the longer 4" front screen with centralised Facetime front camera. We even have the schematics!

Could it be that all these are controlled leaks by Apple to throw us off the scent? It's possible, but unlikely. Everyone said the same thing last year when the 4S parts showed up, and look how that turned out.

All those calling these leaks fakes are likely hoping that they are, either because they want the screen to stay the same size, or because they're holding out for a more radical overhaul.

Give this man a prize because he's got it going on.

Unless these leaks were from the failed attempt at a new iPhone 4S last year, it looks like this is what we're getting.

I would like the wider screen, personally. I have fat fingers and I'm always hitting the letter next to the one I mean to hit, gets kind of annoying. And if you flip the phone 90 degrees you can no longer text with one hand, it's too wide. Maybe I have bigger hands than most but I feel there's a sweet spot in the width just a little larger than it currently is.

I think a lot of us agree with you.

I switched to the Galaxy Nexus because of all these rumors and I had been waiting to try it out for a long time and with the wider screen on that phone, I definitely type faster than on the iPhone. Without the extra width, a lot of iPhone users are pretty much using the same phone, unless they like widescreen video.

If the next iPhone is the same width but with a taller display, it will sell tens of millions and next year there will 10 android knock offs with the same layout...

I'm delighted that it's NOT wider! think about it... this is a PHONE, therefore will spend much of it's life being carried about in trouser pockets... the wider it gets, the worse it'll be, period.

I keep reading about pockets.
I personally don't know one single person that carries their phone in their pocket... Seriously.
All the ladies I know place it in a pocket in their purse. All the men I know, have a case with a clip that hooks to their belt or pants.
Even if it were wider, which I wish for... There would still be plenty of room in a pocket.

Sounds like a dumb phone would be your perfect companion.

Conversely for those of us who use smartphones for what they were designed for, it's not something that just occupies a pocket.

Mine gets used a tremendous amount day in and day out. It's the ultimate way to stay connected, handle email, log onto the company website, etc. :)

I....love....this!

Exact opposite for me. I don't know anyone with a clip anymore. Everyone I know carries it in the pocket. I currently have a Galaxy Nexus, and I love the size. But since I got the iPad I don't use it as much. I'd rather have a device thinner, not as wide, better battery and much better signal. With full sync to my iPad using iMessage I don't think I will need to use the iPhone half as much.
