Play on any server against people with a 5k HLStats score.
The difference is control. Console FPS requires less skill because of auto-aim helping, slower pace. Whereas PC FPS is a lot faster and requires much more skill.
I disagree on the console FPS = less skill front and PC FPS faster/more skill based.
Anyone who plays console FPS with auto aim, aim assistance, or anything similar needs to be shot themselves. As for faster, no. There are console only games out there that are plenty fast, PLENTY...play Time Splitters 2 on the Xbox and then tell me it's not fast - that game is insanely fast. Coupled with the fact that you start a lan deathmatch with no radar + autoaim off and its as intense as any PC FPS out there in deathmatch. I know several people who cannot play TS2 without having motion sickness because of how fast it is. (God I miss that game...*sigh*)
You can even compare one vs the other in games they share, like CoD4. CoD4 was fast as hell (in the multiplayer beta is what I'm basing this on) on the 360, I see no reason to believe that the full version of CoD4 will be any different,
or that the PC version would be any faster than the console ones.
Granted, there are some FPS that are primarily console based that are slower compared to other "fast" ones out there (Halo a biggie). But you can't lump in ALL the games and say one is exclusive of the other and consoles don't have fast FPS's to choose from.
That being said -
Is a mouse/keyboard faster than a controller? Absolutely. You only have so many degrees that you can tilt an analog thumb stick and you can crank up the sensitivity only so far before it's disorienting and when you combine the two - you absolutely do not have the precision, speed and quickness that you do in moving a mouse a smidge or all the way across a mouse pad (3-5" plus).
I still don't get the FPS skill argument a lot of people have.
Control issues aside, if you're on an even playing field - aside from memorizing maps and item locations, IMO a FPS is little more than a twitch contest where anyone on any given day can win. I'm not saying higher end FPS players get beaten by noobs who are on their first match, but it's not a chess match by any means. Anyone can be better with one weapon than someone else or end up with a lucky shot or camp or spawn or whatever. /shrug/
