The 17 inch high res displays are capable of 1080P as they have a resolution of 1900x1200.
Other than movies there isn't too much use for a blu-ray drive yet. I'm guessing the version they would put in the MBP is read only so you wouldn't be able to back up your files to blu-ray if that's the case. In a laptop I'm not sure I see the point of a blu-ray drive but I can imagine that a lot of people will end up getting it, it just won't be me yet!
I did read carefully. I'm not so sure you did. I wasn't arguing your personal feelings on the value of Blu-Ray. The thrust of my statement was that read/write laptop drives are readily available. You made the guesstimation that Apple would use BD-ROM drives as opposed to BD-RE and then appeared to base your value judgment upon that fact. Nothing of the sort in slot-load is currently even manufactured. Hence my question as to why you'd think that? Apologies that I didn't clearly delineate between the question posed to you and my own anecdotal experience.
Incidentally: Here is a slot-loader that'll fit a 17" MBP. The slot load drives are not as prevalent yet certainly aren't $1,000!
Can't play movies on OS X but should work just fine for reading and writing. To each his own.
