I don't see the wi-fi taking off unless a LOT of people get Zunes, in which it would be a cool feature to have.

Otherwise, there's nothing that the Zune has that strikes me as a reason to choose it over the iPod, let alone purchase one WHILE ALREADY owning an iPod.

am i mistaken in thinking that the wifi sharing only allows 3 plays or something? if that is true then i really don't think wi-fi will work. i guess its all that copy right thing again.

but it can't be as cool with the ds sending message thing right? so may be what we need is a dspod. defo interested in that!

Unfortunately or fortunately, I've found out recently that I'm more or less obliged to give Zune a chance.

From what I know so far, Inter-Zune sharing will be slapped with a 3 day evaluation period on copyrighted music. This is quite sensible as it gives people a chance to listen to legally obtained music but doesn't enable mass piracy. If both Zune users subscribe to the 'All You Can Eat' subscription Zune service and the original track was obtained from there, the track when it is wirelessly transmitted should be enabled for unlimited plays the next time it is synced.

I won't be in the market for a player for some time but I doubt Zune will be an option for me when I am

I won't never. why? freaking shxx doesn't not be compatible with mac. even if it could work with when I use bootcamp to use windows. I won't. when I've used ipod once, there is no turning back. itunes store has tons of contents which enough to enjoy. Zune can't even download podcast.

I read somewhere on Engadget that the Zune won't be compatible as a standard removable USB drive. Meaning, if true, you would need special drivers to use the Zune on anything other than Windows. Which in turns means it won't work until someone reverse engineers the drivers.. not really easy. But I will probably eventually get one, just to see how crappy #2 is :)

Edit: anyone know when the Zune will be officially launched?

i will give it a chance if it is ever ahead of the ipod in form and function.
as of right now, juuuuuust a bit outside.

No - and here's why

Well, are you?

I want to when it works with my MBP.

I bought my wife a nano the other day and I was thinking, why is it that Apple is doing so well with the iPod? It wasn't the same when the Walkman was on top of its game. Sure it was good to have the iconic machine itself, but a Panasonic could be just as good, sometimes better. Then I realized what it was. If you have a stack of tapes it doesn't matter what you play them on, there are thousands of tape decks and portable players, but if you get locked into the wrong MP3 player you risk having to buy all over again the player, and worst of all not being able to play the music you paid to download (or subscribe to). MP3 players and services change like the wind, the only provider that has kept a consist presence and a consistent product is Apple. It also helps that its technology is light years ahead of the competition. MS will have to prove that they are indeed going to keep the Zune going and not just ditch it when they decide to give something else a go or when they give up trying to compete. It is not like buying a flashy Walkman, people are not buying MP3 players just because they look good, they are buying them for how they work and with the greatest possible amount of reassurance that they will go on working (and that means companies keeping drivers up to date, something that was not an issue with tape and CD). Am I going to give Zune a chance? No way. I don't need it, I don't want it and I know that my life will be less stressful without it.

Well I'm not expecting Microsoft to put the "Apple markup" on the Zune.
The point is, even with the Apple mark-up, the 30 GB iPod is cheaper than the 30 GB Zune, at least in the U.S. NZ prices of Zune have not yet been announced AFAIK, but will likely be similar. The difference in price between the two will be minimal. And if Zune also comes in a higher capacity, the iPod will likely have a large price advantage (look how little price difference there is between the 30 GB and 80 GB iPods).

The Zune should be an MTP device so it has a chance of working with XNJB (which, with all due credit for the author for even attempting to support POS Creatives, is not a great piece of software per se).

I might guve the Zune (or any other MP3 player) a chance if it can add a gap between songs. I get so fed up with my Nano for running songs toget her and cutting off the very end of a song. Otherwise I love it. And yes, I have researched and asked on both this and Apple's forum and nobody has answered my question.

Turned off gapless?

As long as it's open source (haven't checked), someone can always extract the API part and write a new GUI for it to synchronize with iTunes. That's what I plan to do at least :)

I don't see any setting for gapless (I haven't upgraded the Nano at all and iTunes is the previous version). Isn't gapless a feature of the latest iTunes software and iPod firmware?

In that case you're doing something very wrong. Post screenshots of your iTunes Importing screen.

Thanks, I'll do that tonight. You're the first person that has offered to help. Thanks again!
