I have a 3G iphone and with all the rumors and speculation, i see no reason why anyone would upgrade to the new one unless there was something truly kickass coming out like a front facing camera.

reasons why someone would upgrade to a slightly better 3G are:
-still have a 2G
-wants more storage
-better processor? eh, lotta money i bet you can save

im basically saying, apple made allot of money off people upgrading from 2G's to 3G's so if they want that again they better have thrown a video camera on the front or ill keep my 3G till next year.

I'm not gonna....I just don't see anything too groundbreaking happening in a year :-/ Maybe next year I'll get a new one.

I admire your restraint, but I really think that the mere fact the iPhone has 3G is a large enough reason to upgrade. If you do any browsing at all away from Wi-Fi hotspots I can't stress enough how much better 3G is than EDGE. If you do all your browsing on Wi-Fi then that doesn't apply, of course.

First you have to have 3g coverage. That would help. Most of the areas in the US do not have 3g.

There will come a time in everyone's life when they will stop upgrading, I'm not prepared to accept that I have reached that point yet.

I validate my existence by my need to be 'up-to-date', makes me feel better.

I wish I was a cat.

If it's something small, I probably won't upgrade, especially if they don't make any changes to the design.

I will definitely upgrade if they have any 2 of these features:

-New design, that is more scratch-resistant
-Video camera
-Flash for Safari
-Turn-by-turn GPS with voice

Uh, up to three of the items you listed may be possible with software upgrades to the current iPhone 3G.

I'm definitely getting one but it'll depend on the aesthetics. Camera, I could care less since I have my Sony T700. Front-camera? Could care less. They both will have 3G anyway. So if the new one looks bad, I'd just get a 3G for cheap on craigslist.

sorry for dumb question, but i am just wondering about the upgrade.

If I just buy through att (meaning extending my contract) will i be able to buy the new phone with no extra cost the day the phone comes out (the cost i bought my first iphone for with getting a contract with att)?

so $200 for a new phone?

No body knows.

Open your AT&T online account. It will tell you if can buy at a reduced price and will tell you to the day when you can buy at the full subsidized price.

I am already thinking that there is almost nothing that will convince me to get the new iPhone. If it looked like the mockup in the "Best new iPhone mockup ever" thread which is thinner, and smaller but with the same sized screen ... I would probably be sold. But all the rumors are leaning towards an almost identical look but with a matte back and black or no bezel... What's the point then? I'll keep my 3G for another year and hold out for a decent upgrade.

But... My decision now is based on speculation alone, so it's pretty much worthless until about noon tomorrow.

If I wasnt unemployed since Dec....I'd be so YES right now....

Sorry about your situation. Most people here on this forum do not realize that our economy will be the biggest factor in who will or will not upgrade. We have close to 10% unemployment here in the US. Over 350,000 people lost there jobs last month and I don't see that changing any time soon.

I wish you the best of luck. Hang in there.

probably not. it wouldnt necessarily be just 200 or 300 dollars. there is a new case/cases, applecare if you want it, and possibly having to rebuy all the apps you purchased on your 3g, unless you are able to get them back without purchasing them. i dont really know the answer to that one actually  . there would have to be something more than just a faster processor and more ram to get me to buy another phone. ill wait and see tomorrow! i cant wait for the keynote, ill be watching it live at 1EST, i hope its as exciting as i think itll be.

I'm willing to pay up to $499.00 if I have to. Not eligible until August of next year. I'm hoping AT&T/Apple will let everyone get it for the subsidized price as I plan to buy one for a family member as well. If it isn't readily available to current in contract iPhone owners I'm probably going to get a Bold until I'm eligible.

Absolutely i will buy it!!.. i am a harcore iphone fanatic since day 1 of release of the original. I dont care what it looks like or what it has in it. i will buy it no matter how much it is.. or how much of an upgrade it is. Apple is ****ing amazing!!!:apple::apple:

Even though this is my third 3G and I am not eligible for the upgrade discount, I'll still upgrade. My first two 3Gs I sold for $500 each and I also had the first generation phone. I just want 32GBs on the new one.

I'm still hoping that 3G owners will get some sort of subsidy, but I'll buy it regardless.

Plus from what 3G's are going for on eBay, it'll more than make up the cost. :D Seriously, I've seen them going for $700 and up and still getting over 20 bids. hahahahaha
