I am because I have been looking for decent new music for almost 2 years now. Most of my bands have been horrible disappointing with new releases.

This will be a great casual way to check out new music that my friends are listening to, rather than scouring the web and sorting through the "bubblegum pop" as stated before.

granted the artists there now aren't anything great, but its still day 1

I am on the tran that thinks that we don't really need another Social networking, an integration to the most populars one would have been more than enough

i signed up. we'll see how much i use it though. not many bands are in yet it seems...
but you can "like" albums from anyone.

No. It's totally useless unless you buy your music from iTunes. I can't see what any of my friends are listening to and vice versa. What's the point?

I have to say the Zune social functions are 10 times better and I'll be interested to see what Microsoft adds with the soon to come Zune software update.

zune's are still around? never knew that! not seen any on sale here in the UK in at least the last year or 2, thought they just stuck it into xbox live as a last ditch attempt to salvage something for it....

I chose that I'm tired of social networking.

"Oh, Sam, I NEED to use your computer to check my Facebook."
"No. I'm on it."
"But it's REALLY important! I HAVE to check my Farmville!!!!111!!!1"
"No. No ******* Farmville. Do it at your house."

Well it's not just Zune's any more, Windows 7 Phone will be using the Zune software for media management and syncing.

I think it might be useful in finding new music. However, they need to make the algorithm for suggesting people to follow a little more sophisticated. The same is true for 'Genius' and music. It's about time Apple abandoned the 'you bought X, and others who bought X also bought Y' approach and start identifying features of the music we like.

I want Ping to work. Popular music is so cr*p, as is radio in the UK (thank god for the TuneIn Radio app), that iTunes is the only way I can find new music I like. It'd be nice to have a group of people who share the same esoteric tastes in alternative music that I do (Big Black, The Chills, Ali Farke Touré). It's not like I am going to meet people like that in my sleepy town in Scotland.... :( So... here's hoping....

Right now, Ping is artist invite only. My band has many CDs on the iTunes store, and distributed through Sony. I talked with Sony yesterday about it, and they claim Apple will be letting them know "soon" about signing up other artist accounts. Basically, closing off the artist accounts to only those mega star bands, whose labels paid big bucks... I mean... were "invited" to be a part of it, is a horrible way to start a social network. A community will make this successful and in order to do it, it needs more then Lady Gaga and U2. The launch of this feels premature, and I can't help but wonder if Google or someone else has something like this on the horizon, and Apple wanted to beat them to the punch, and released it before Ping was ready.

I signed up, I'll see how it goes with usage. I'm not a huge social network user. I'm on facebook, that's about it and even then I hardly use it.
