There is no way I am buying a new phone for a few years.
I have an iPhone 12 mini and an SE2020, both have 100% battery health and are in perfect condition.

I sold my X as it was getting a bit old. This part funded the purchase of the mini.

I don't plan on upgrading, I paid off my 13PM already and am happy with it. I just don't see any "wow I need to upgrade" with the rumors on the 14PM. Besides, I just bought a new MBP and now have that to pay off.

I'm from the Eurozone, so for me it depends on what the iPhone price in € will be doing.

iPad Air 5 is already considerably more expensive than iPad Air 4 was at launch. The new MacBook Air has obviously seen a price increase in $, but it's even worse in Euro's: M1 Air went for around €950. M2 Air for over €1500.
If similar things happen to the €-iPhone price, I'll not upgrade at all or perhaps even look for friendlier priced Android alternatives.

Most likely I wouldn’t upgrade if they raise the price of the 14 Pro Max to $1,200. Instead I might just get the monthly AppleCare+ for my 13 Pro Max before it’s 1-year warranty is up and stick with it long term.

Here are a few of the reasons that would compel me to upgrade in the future:
  • USB C port (finally)
  • Satellite connection
  • Much lighter weight
  • Matte side railings
  • Even greater battery life
  • All screen display
  • 1200+ nit display

I can afford it but I won’t pay more than £799 for an iPhone on principle. So yes, a hike would put me off and i’ll buy an iPhone 13 instead. It’s not like there’s much difference in hardware anyway and I’m 40 years old, so don’t have to have the latest.
