The build quality is no better than the 3G. The OP happened to get a perfect one but it's not indicative of anything. The original iPhone is the only one with superior fit and finish.

Hmm. Maybe Apple should redesign the iPhone to be easier to build therefore reducing the manufacturing flaws.

I wish Apple built the iPhone like they build their MacBook Pros. Those machines are SOLID.

Also, I'd like to point out that my first generation iPod touch was PERFECT in every way. I didn't have negative black, uneven bezel, crooked glass, uneven glass, cracks, light leaks, or lines on my screen. I wish they would build the iPhones with the same type of quality.

I still have my iPod touch because I refuse to get rid of it.

If you have a perfect iPhone, DO NOT SELL IT... you have a rare item, and it's going to be hard to find that kind if quality again.

I wonder who's in charge of quality control at Apple's Chinese facility. QC is really human related therefore it's crucial who's in charge. The guy in charge of QC must be a relentless quality freak, otherwise, it's bound to fail.

please don't forget MR is a minority, and just because it looks like a lot of people have problems, remember most people that don't have problems don't go online, so it's going to look like qc is worse when it may be the exactsame if not better... though I do agree the 2g is superior in build, it's probably bullet proof... :)

My nearly 1 year old 3G was (is) pretty good. A few minor dust specs under the screen have developed over nearly 1 year in my pocket and it has a few subtle cracks in the white plastic that have been well reported.

But on a whole, the phone has been solid. Good screen, strong battery, good reception and no GPS issues.

And my release-day original iPhone is also still going strong (even after being in the employ of my pre-teen daughter for nearly a year!) though signs of battery fatigue are showing.

And yesterday I had the pleasure of handing down my white 16GB 3G to my wife (replacing her 2 year old original) in exchange for a 32GB black 3GS :)

The 3GS seems to be well put together. Bright screen, no dead pixels, perfectly centered display... a fine specimen.

This is the 5th iPhone in our household and the 2nd 3GS. Each has been without any significant issues.
