I plan on getting Leopard with a shiny new MacBook (pro) ( as well as iWork and Apature 1.5+ ).

The switch has been years in the making and I finally made the commitment to switch and now I'm just waiting for the next release before making my jump. I could write volumes on why I'm switching, but I'm sure this crowd has hear it before. Needless to say I want to work and not spend my time talking to Bangladesh to re-activate a legal copy of XP _again_ or reprogramming cups or the kernel so that I can download images.

I would have bought already, but it seem like waiting a month or two is prudent at this point.

ALERT. No matter what happens in April - and I agree FCS 6 is likely - you need to take advantage of Apple's once in a lifetime offer to go from FCP 4/4.5 HD PPC or any component of the PPC Final Cut Production - including upgrade versions - to the full FCS 5.1 UB for only $199. The upgrade from FCS 5.1.2 UB to FCS 6 will still cost a lot less than it will if you don't go to FCS 5.1.2 UB for $199 by March 20. This offer was supposed to end December 20. But Apple is bending over backwards to extend the offer for three more months through this winter. Anyone who has the old software and doesn't plunk down the $199 for the upgrade is making a big mistake.

There is no upgrade from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Studio 5.1 UB. The upgrade from FCE to FCP has been discontinued iMacZealot. You missed the window of opportunity to do that. If you had, you would have been able to go from your FCP to FCS UB for only $199. But that time is gone. Sorry. :(

NOTE: $200 rebate on Final Cut Express HD, when you buy a new Mac with it, expires Tuesday March 27. Looks like a date we might expect something new to show up. Wonder what it will be? Like Leopard? Just guessing. ;)

Oh, no, I wasn't expecting an "upgrade" to FCP. I knew they discontinued that a while ago. I was planning on just buying the whole thing for $699 (my sisters are in college and can get the edu discount.) I was looking for a copy of Motion 2, DVD Studio Pro 4, or Soundtrack Pro so I could upgrade for $199, but it's impossible to find one of those.

But what are you suggesting I do? I don't see why I should buy FCS 5 now for $699 and then see FCS 6 come out in six weeks and buy an upgrade to that or pay full price for it.

Oh, and are you suggesting that FCS 6 will be Intel-only? That'll be scary for me because I won't get a mactel for at least another year, and I can't be using FCE for much longer.

Absolutely. This would be the first OS I would upgrade because I just bought new PCs before my iBook. Plus, I've had $140-ish saved for the past 2 months in the back of my wallet, just for Leopard. I can't touch it until then.

The only thing keeping me back from buying it the day it comes out, I can't drive there myself.

you think the new pages will be that good? I really doubt that...

I've been using the demo version (iWork 06) and have found it a perfectly acceptable relacment for Word. I would have bought it already - if iWork 07 was not expected soon.

I started using Word back in the days when you could run it off a floppy. Since then it has become bloated with features that people just don't use. I just need a word processor that is also file-compatible with the version of Word that was included in Office 2000 (rtf will do in a pinch).

The one thing I would like that Pages can't do (as far as I can tell) is to be able to display the word cound for a block of selected text. As Pages can directly tie in with voiceover (a useful proofing/editing tool to have the text spoken back), I consider it a trade-off I can more than live with.

YMMV, but the brutal truth... (you are about to disclose the brutal truth. Allow or Cancel) ... is that most people don't need all of that stuff that fills the Office install disks. They don't need the latest version of Office (most people I know are quite happy with 97 to 2K).

I've tried Open Office, but it does not "just work. I'm looking at the options of buying two licences of Office 2008 (unlike Office 2K where you could install the software on a desktop and a laptop under the terms and conditions of the licence) vs a family iWorks 07 pack. Less expensive. Less bother (no activation). No MicroSoft.

I'll probably wait until 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 to upgrade. I'm quite happy with what I have now so no rush. :) (But then again, that could change quickly :p )
