XS - still going strong. Battery capacity still 81%
Biggest concern is app no longer being supported because XS doesn't do iOS26

I don’t think that will be an issue within the next two years. I gave my mom my 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 512GB (iPadOS 17) and app compatibility hasn’t been an issue yet.

Honestly, I wish Apple would stop updating iPads at the same time they drop iPhones with the same chipset. That way, the iPads still get security updates while performance remains decent.

Apple A10
  • iPhone 7 - iOS 15
  • iPad 6th gen - iPadOS 17
  • iPad 7th gen - iPadOS 18

Apple A12
  • iPhone XR/XS - iOS 18
  • iPad 8th gen - iPadOS 26
  • iPad Air 3rd gen - iPadOS 26

The main issue is compatibility. Sooner or later popular apps will stop working altogether (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, FaceTime and iMessage).

Technically it is unsafe to use this OS, however there is a very small chance of getting any virus while browsing the web, especially with such an old JavaScript version where most websites would break. Currently JS is the main method how hackers inject malware in iOS. If AdBlock is used it might be a much safer browsing experience since AdBlock works like a mini antivirus by banning most useless trackers and links. However it is a good habit not to visit unknown websites

iOS 15 on the iPhone 6s and 7 have received recent critical security updates so I think they're still mostly fine. As you mentioned, app compatibility is an issue with 15 at this point in time.

I am close as I use a SE 3 as my daily driver and love it.

That's circa iPhone 13 so I reckon that counts.

I caved and replaced my SE3 with the iPhone Air.

My SE3 is reporting like 89% battery health but it needs to be charged 3x a day which is too much (very light phone use with average of 10 minutes daily onscreen time).

Using a 13 pro max and honestly, still don’t see any need to upgrade. Still does every I need in the blink of an eye, battery still last a full day easily and never once has the camera let me down. Maybe I’ll upgrade to the 18 when it comes out but if I do, it’s just for the sake of upgrading and not because I think the 13 is no longer useful.

Until two days ago I used my 12 mini for almost 5 years.
Battery health at 55%. Even at full charge the phone was choppy, but not unusable by any means!

Thought about replacing the battery after reading rumors it will get iOS 27 this year.

But I got an renew offer from my provider and get a 17 with discount.

Opted for that, and to be honest after defending and only wanting a mini phone, I don’t miss the mini at all.
I was using a 12 mini as my daily driver for 2 years too so I can relate. After upgrading to a 13, then 15, now 17, I don't miss it at all. Mini is no longer for me. A lot of apps have grown too big for the mini screens.

My iPhone 12 mini remains, as far as I can tell, superior to anything but perhaps an iPhone 13 mini. (With the exception of the previous main phone-type device, my first-gen iPhone SE, on permanent duty as a server traffic display.)
I really want to get a 13 mini ... How is your 12 with the newest software ?

I was on an Apple refurbished 13 mini for a bit coming from the 14 Pro. Decided to move up to the Air and gift my father the 13 mini to replace his 12 mini (which was having battery and storage issues).

I’m expecting/hoping to get at least 5 years out of the Air now. My M4 iPad Pro will likely be replaced around then too, might end up getting a foldable iPhone at that point.

Hanging on to the 13 mini for the time being, and even that’s a bit too big for my hands. If the new foldable is usable one-handed when closed I might consider a refurb.

I’ve been using my iPhone 11 since about a week after it was released back in 2019. Nearly seven years and two new batteries later it’s still going strong and runs iOS 26 very smoothly.
