And to prove some of us don't feel that safe ;)

This thread has talked me into creating ANOTHER CCC backup... I'm partitioning one of my 2TB externals (that currently does not have a backup on it) and putting my 3rd backup (CCC) onto it ;)

If your THAT worried then another thing to do which I do is always use when you can IMAP. You NEVER need to worry about your emails then as it's all in the cloud lol.

Already done ;)

I know it's overkill, but I mean I have all these HDD's sitting around, I might as well put them to use.

I have a few 2TB ones, a couple 500GB, and some 320GB ones... so I put them to good use. After I partition some of them off and split them up, it's technically a total of like 9 HDD's lol... but it works out. I keep certain stuff on certain partitions etc.

Ah well if you have HDD"s sitting there doing nothing then fair enough as they have no value. Not many people will buy second hand HDD's.
I upgraded the HDD in my satellite receiver and recycled it's 320gb one into an external USB enclosure which I use when I wipe my machine to store my data, so I can understand about recycling hard drives.

I use a NAS box with 2 RE3's (2TB each) in RAID 1 (mirrored) for my storage. These are enterprise level disks, but are worth the extra money!

That is hardcore. I think the internet would end before you lose data. That is such a kick ass setup and if I had more money, I would definitely have to mimic your setup. I am guessing you are using Firewire or SATA to connect?

I am feeling like my back-up is lacking but I have to ask given we are talking about backups...does anyone else keep a backup of their most important files at another location? I keep a large flash drive and a DVD-R with my most important files in my gun safe.

...yet oddly enough I keep a gun in my desk.

I know one guy whose NAS box went wrong. All your enterprise level disks don't help you when that happens. And RAID 1 doesn't help you if you delete data by mistake because it will delete in both places. Any data that you value must be backed up in an _independent_ place.

Strongly disagreed. One nice thunderstorm could be enough to take it out. A destructive virus on Windows, or a destructive trojan can take it out. So can user error. Or a burglar.

I have 17.48 GB of Dropbox storage.

content

It's pretty simple. I used a script to generate fake email addresses and pwds and got 8GB within 15 minutes.

www.dropbox.com/free - do every step and you get additional 640 MB of storage.
www.dropbox.com/edu - 500 MB with every .edu sign up

If you also point out a good bug to the developers.. sometimes they're nice enough to give you 8-12 GB for free.

lol you make it seem like off-site backups are like the pinnacle of disaster recovery. I mean...I guess they are, but it's nothing new. I've always had offsite backups but have just now expanded it to rotating backups of ALL my data instead of just the stuff i've made.

Anyway, this is my current project. All you 2x2TB guys running with skizzors (no backup)...for shame ladies, for shame. Mirrored disks = (# of disk) * the pain you'll feel during accidental deletions.

Holy crap...literally this exact time a decade ago I was like stoked because I had a 5 gigabyte hard drive (and a 600mhz Pentium III w/ 8mb of video memory)

How many separate hard drives are you using?

I have an external drive with two partitions
1. Time machine
2. Carbon Copy Clone

Time Machine runs automatically
Carbon Copy Cloner clones my drive every night at 3:00 AM

Do you need 2 partitions to do this or can the time machine backups and the ccc backups reside together?

All drives fail eventually. They all also can prematurely break or become corrupt given sufficient outside influence. Your devices can also get lost or stolen. The solution is to do proper backups on a regular basis.

In addition to an external 1.5 TB HD where I have images, movies, and music backed up as well as regularly-updated bootable clones, I use dropbox for my cannot-live-without files and use Gmail (via Mail), contacts, and Google Calendar (synced with iCal and my Android phone).

The only drawback is the loss of my media files in case of fire etc. For that reason, I'm thinking of getting another external HD. I figure I can back up media files once a month, and store the HD either in my office at work or in the firebox in our basement the rest of the time.

Storage

I use a Drobo for home storage, and I have my main machine set to automatically back up to Carbonite for offsite storage. Also, I back up any academic or professional writing to a friend's server in another state. I have been through hurricanes, earthquakes, and house fires so I don't take chances.

The best of these solutions? Just use Carbonite. The single user account is really cheap, and it automatically backs up all your data from any one computer to a nice, safe offsite location.

Here is what I have so-far...

I have my iMac that has a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD, both have a time machine backup to an external 1TB (Firewire).

Then I CCClone my SSD/HD once a week to a separate 1TB Drive (Bootable backup)

I also use Dropbox to backup some stuff thats important but not private.

I have all my media shared on a Terastation NAS with 4 1TB HDDs in a RAID 10. That serves my AppleTV's and PS3 for media, music and pictures (music and pics are also in iTunes/iPhoto on the iMac HDD. Movies are rips I either made or (got) around 500 movies so I gave up on backing up these, most I watch a few times and never see again so I wouldn't cry if they were lost, would be more sad for the NAS going...

Think Ill drop a USB clone of my iMac into my safety-deposit box just for insurance.
