Just remember the new iPhone will not be released in June, it will be shown for the first time in June. Actual release will take place in July. This, just like last year, gives them time to complete drop shipments and get people trained on the new hardware.

Seconded. We might see an announcement at WWDC - but we're not likely to see a release in June. No reports of training on a new handset being given to O2 staff afaik, and little if any real rumors on the hardware of a new handset giving indication of a time of release

Not enough info to really say with much confidence - much quieter than last year.

I've been a dedicated Apple guy, but, I'll be purchasing the new Nokia N97.. I'm tired of Apple's secretive hide everything, never knowing what to expect nature.

I have budget for a new handset in July, Apple has nothing as far as I'm concerned, so, the N97 is the winner by default :)

Apple's only secretive to the extent that we don't know what they'll be releasing, only that they will release something. That's the great thing about Apple. They have cycles by which you can set your watch. They will release the iPhone 3 in early to mid-July and it'll happen every year. But everyone knew there'd be a new iPhone long before Apple even hinted at it because it was painfully obvious that they'd have to go 3G to compete with...anyone.

The cycle will maintained by 3.0 OS, which will be released in June/July. There is no reason to assume Apple has any obligation to upgrade the hardware as well, and since there is no evidence to speak of... your post is 100% speculative and holds the same sense of entitlement that a lot of members here have. It's far smarter to assume that nothing will happen and to be surprised if it does, rather than assume all these things (nano) which never happen (and are stupid).

I hope they release a whole new iPhone and not just a new OS. My 3G is falling apart.

Not necessarily. The Touch didn't get bumped like last time - indicating it'll get a refresh at a similar time to the iPhone. They're going to get OS 3.0 together.
The Touch could get fielded for sports, alongside the Nano and shuffle for all we know.
Not denying that it could be a July release at all - but the cycles aren't necessarily going to stay there completely constant - some cycles might be more reliable than others (e.g. back to school - going back to school time doesn't change).

Really? 100% speculative? You must live on the forums, because if you actually bothered to read the stuff on page one, you'd put the information there together and come up with a new iPhone. The timing is just the icing. Also, Apple is pretty good about staying on its cycles with all of its products, not just the iPhone, but the MacBook and MacBook Pro and such. So it's only natural to assume that they would continue on with that trend with their iPhone releases, seeing as both of the other iPhones have been released around the same time.

And why is it smarter exactly? Because you can feign surprise when Apple does exactly what everyone else knew it would do?

But generally they stick to the same cycles. And the touch may have been the exception that proves the rule. I still think that the Touch was sort of an afterthought originally and it took them a little extra time to get it up to par.

You can keep believing what you will, the fact is schiller said there would be a hardware update every year. He said it in TWO keynotes.

Every year may not be a complete overhual, updated it will be none-the-less. Software has NEVER maintained an update cycle with Apple or any other company for that matter. That is unless you're referring to a SOFTWARE update cycle. (re-read my note about Schiller talking about a HARDWARE update)

This will most likely happen:

Announcement of it at WWDC ([World Wide?] Developers Conference)
Release date of the Tuesday around July 11th.

Please cite links with the specific times where he said "yearly hardware updates."

To my mind, the fact that new apps must be compatible with 3.0 OS would suggest that the latest 3G iPhones are going to come pre-installed with 3.0 OS (probably on or around the official release of 3.0 for download). Obviously it wouldn't be very good (especially considering Apple's latest marketing scheme - "there's an app for that") if new users endured 2.0 style crashing.

Unless they don't make anymore 3Gs, as was the case for the original iPhone when the 3G came out.

The only two articles I need to read this month are (1) iPhone 3G shortage or no longer available and (2) AT&T employees not allowed vacation time from date 'x' to date 'x'.

Just like last time. Except they very well could keep either the 8gb or 16gb around and lower the price as a $99 entry level phone.

We'll see in a month folks! Gonna be fun! :D

If I recall correctly 2.0 was released with 3G last year. So why couldn't 3.0 be released with iPhone 3? Also Apple needs a new hardware update to get sales back up. If you haven't heard, RIM recently surpassed them. And it isn't going to get any better. A software update isn't going to cut it if Apple wants to increase sales. The only people a software update will hype up are the people who already own an iPhone. Gun to my head, I'd guess there will be a new iPhone rather than not.
