Have YOU actually used an iPad 2 w/ ios9? You state a coworker has...but are you able to validate that in any way?
Yes, I setup the device from scratch last autumn. It came wiped with iOS 9. It was a hand me down as most people on our team don't usually get iPads. At first I used it to test some deployments of our app as I needed an older, non-retina iPad. I've been working with her closely lately doing user testing on our current site as we redesign the new one, and even trying to do basic things such as taking notes while we test users has been a huge pain for her. She barely uses it now as it's just not worth the trouble.

At the end of the day though, no one is forcing anyone to buy anything. If people don't like the specs, don't buy it, simple. Though if your average punter is anything like the average punter I know, they couldn't tell you if the inside of an iPad had 2GB of RAM or 300 magic pixies running around passing notes to each other.

I agree with most everything you said except this last bit. The Pro devices have historically been targeted at higher-end users who actually do care and have demanding tasks. What I find unsettling is that Apple seems to be targeting regular consumers with their latest Pro lineup. It's a trend that I hope doesn't spread to other product lines. A machine like this shouldn't be designed for the average person but for someone doing higher-end work.

Hopefully it's just too early in the product lifespan and there are better things to come because I desperately want iOS to get up to par so I can kick back in my hammock on a lazy Sunday afternoon and power through a few thousand 42MP RAW files, haha. Or maybe work on a complex app comp with a few hundred interactive views and be able to quickly change and edit icons on the fly and have my changes sync automatically with Dropbox so my dev team 120 miles away can add the new functionality. Or I can edit files in Coda and have Codekit running in the background processing my SASS ready to upload the changes to my dev server. Then if I need to whip up some SVGs it's no problem to switch over to an editor and save it to my project folder so I can sync the new files to the server.

You see, it's the bigger things like having the power to do more with professional-level graphics and things of that nature, and the smaller things in iOS like letting apps work together while having project folders so that everything is organized and easy to change as a part of a bigger project workflow that has several hundred components. I don't even mind if something like web development and design takes longer on the iPad, I just want to be able to kick back and do some real work casually, whenever I have a moment while out and about or what have you. Usually it's just to do part of a project. Although something like photography could actually be faster. Apps like Adobe Lightroom Mobile are pretty slick and I can power through my workflow maybe even faster on the iPad, especially for rating things, and the editing sliders are great for touch. But they still require a Mac to load RAW files, and the files themselves are low-resolution proxies that get synced back to your Mac. Hopefully one day we won't need Macs at all. They'll still work together, and Macs will still be faster, but they will be optional. That's the key.

complaining about just 2gb of ram is TOTALLY justified.

If we're paying $1,000 for a device it's sort of a joke that it doesn't have 4 or 8.

$1,200 for a device with 2GB is laughable.

But look at all of us who bought it anyway, myself included.

That gives 11 layers on the iPP 12.9. You can have a canvas as large as 16k x 4194.

my bad, i meant i want to work with A2 sized documents without problems. i get crashes when i try to work at that size. 4gb is still too small for my work. 8 is minimum. i do allot of photobashing. i know they say you can do so many layers, but real world experience says otherwise.

all the reviews are saying it's a great tablet but overprice and you guys disagree?

oh come on. Does anyone actually think this thing is reasonably priced? One grand for something with 2gb of ram? $200 more to go from 32gb to 128gb?

It's a total and colossal ripoff and if you think otherwise then you need to re-evaluate your value of the dollar.

I bought one, and I'm going to enjoy it. People who buy these either have so much money they don't care that it's a rip off, or they just really like them and so to them the price is justified.

But come on, their pricing scheme is hilarious. I can comfortably afford to buy one mine, and I even felt dirty pushing the "confirm order" button.

By that analogy then no one should drive a Ferrari or Lamborghini because they are colossal ripoffs too if you solely look at price. What does it do "more" than another sports car 1/4-1/2 the cost with 4 wheels?

Love how people here think they have a duty to defend the public or something. People can make their own choices, end of story. Or if they like the device FOR WHAT IT IS NOW IN 2016, they are an Apple apologist. Sorry, but Apple never PROMISED you 5 years of usage out of an iPad to b*tch and moan about- they never promised any lifespan in fact.

No my friend. My point is exactly that yes, the iPad is disgustingly overpriced, like a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. But the people who buy iPads either have so much money they don't care, or our personal intrinsic value of the ipad exceeds its opportunity cost.

"Overpriced" is subjective.

Where is another tablet that runs iOS with the size and specs of the Pro and Apple Pencil support with a lower price so I can call this iPad overpriced.

Can't think of one? Because there is only one. You have to pay a premium to get a product only made by one retailer

If there were dozens of other tablets just like the iPad at reduced prices, then I'd say that the iPad is overpriced.

A9X? True Tone? Apple Pencil? Better camera? Better speakers? Modest battery improvement?

They are not the same device at all (and those 3 cores are still slower than the A9X 2).

If those improvements mean nothing, than it's overpriced. That's why I said it's subjective.

Technically the pencil isn't a traditional stylus which is a pointing device to select items on the screen, too small or otherwise, and used very little for writing (think Palm treo). The iPad is 100% usable with a finger without the pencil.

It's a way way more of a drawing tool than a traditional stylus.

"Really hurts" An operating system designed to run at a reasonable performance level on 512meg of ram really hurts with 2GB?

Slight exaggeration surely?

As someone who monitors memory usage closely when developing apps, I've not seen anything to deem 2GB of memory for iOS to be a disadvantage.

Really? The difference is obvious between my 6s Plus and my iPad Pro 12.9". The 6s Plus is dumping apps in the background way before the iPad Pro. Not even a comparison!

So your 6s Plus is completely intolerable then, barely works at all, needs replacing immediately?

Of course there's going to be a difference, oddly enough when two devices with entirely different chipsets and memory configurations go head to head, there's always one better than the other.

That doesn't immediately mean that memory in excess of 2GB is an absolute necessity for iOS. I'm sticking with my 6+ until the 7 comes out and it's only got 1GB of RAM. Yet I don't see any of these extreme limitations you would suggest its should have, despite me being an extremely heavy user. Do I notice differences? well, of course I bloody do, but nothing that would have me whinging about performance issues.

At this particular moment there's lots of apps in the background, on my 12.9" Pro, there's some file transfers going on in the background and it's streaming music on Apple Music.

It's also hooked up to Xcode while I do some debugging and I'll grant you the results are quite shocking.

And just while I'm here, here's the same but on my iPhone 6+ with it's piddly 1GB of RAM.

I must be in the minority, or have too much money, which I don't :D But I honestly don't think it's that drastic a change. In the UK, compared to the iPad Air 2 at launch, the difference is only £60 more for the 9.7" Pro on a comparable spec. Which is only about a 9% difference in price.

Considering the extras the Pro offers it could have been worse, considering its Apple. But that's why they've kept the Air 2 around. It's still a capable system and a viable option for people who don't need, or want to pay the extra for the Pro.

+1

In the end, each one has to make his own trade-off / cost-benefit analysis. I for one like to think in $$$/day. For my cars, my bikes, my phones and my computing devices (notebooks, tablets, etc). I used to buy top of the line VAIOs for my work (believe me, they cost way more than $1K). My iPad Pro purchase (128Gb + LTE) will cost me $1/day but will end up after 3 years in the hands of my son or another family member.

Apple gives you lots of intangibles: I have only one iPad 1 that failed me (after 4 ½ years) probably battery died. But I still have iPad 1, 2s, 3s and Air going strong. The Air with me and handed others down to family. I heard numerous stories of screens been broken and fixed for free (I had one of those). In terms of iPhones, I never bought Apple care but I had 4 phones replaced by Apple (all without lots of questions). Recently and iPhone 5 was replaced due to the faulty power button recall (and yes it had some cracks in the screen but Apple replaced the entire phone at no cost).

I'll bet you most people by iPads to SAVE money not because they are big spenders. Or have you not heard any horror stories from people that bought other vendors tablets, cheap PCs, phones just to need assistance in 3-6 months and suffer to get support or a replacement?

Same here. TCO and utility matters. Sure I can buy an Android tablet for $50 or maybe a Windows tablet with 4GB RAM that's priced the same as the iPad but if I'm not using either because they suck, that's just wasted money (and yes, I've wasted a lot of money trying alternatives to iOS).

This, too. Part of the reason I continue to buy Apple mobile devices is I because I can just walk to the nearest Apple Store (we've actually got 2) to get it fixed or replaced. With other manufacturers, I've pretty much come to expect that when my device dies, I'll need to buy a new one rather than deal with customer service for weeks or months.

Once again, your specific use case may not necessitate the extra RAM. My use case does. And 1GB was hopeless. Safari tab reloading even if you switch only one app? Craziness.

For a "Pro" device, the 9.7" should have had 4GB. But I'm not surprised it doesn't. Cause Apple.

Stinks to hear about the smart covers. I'll be skipping the keyboard

I agree. The fact that the new smart cover doesn't properly fit the new iPad, and instead overhangs the side is a real bummer. The fact that Apple designed it to pair with the back case at another 60 bucks really stinks.

For me, it's not about the extra money—although that is annoying—but the WHOLE POINT of the iPad vs. just using a Macbook Air is it's super thin, easy form factor. When the cases start making is as thick as an Air, Apple is destroying part of the value prop for people like me.
