Aspyr didn't hold the digital distribution rights to Civ IV, so 2K was allowed to make the game SteamPlay. I'm sure Aspyr wasn't happy about it, and it's the only Aspyr product on Steam. They probably worked out a different licensing arrangement this time around.

Well if it isn't distributed on Steam, it will be useless for multiplayer. If they release it on Steam, it will most likely released on steamplay. If it's released on Steam play, it will have to be given to early PC purchasers since otherwise there is no framework to buy the Mac version for those users. So really it will either A. Not be on steam and not have steamworks multiplayer with Windows users, or B. be available for free to early Windows purchasers.

Too bad this is the ********* Cov game to date.

No unit stacking, no spies, no religion, no planets to settle, ****** ****** ******!

No, it can utilize SteamWorks without being distributed on Steam. Again, see SupCom2. You must buy it separately, but the game requires Steam to launch and integrates with it.

Interesting. They will probably go that route then.

When is fall?

Goes through December 20th. Officially, though this year the solstice happens on December 21st at 23:38. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_solstice) ;)

I have already purchased the PC version on Steam. If you're not going to simultaneously release it, you lost my $$ unless you offer steamplay.

I wish these Mac publishers would get their head out of their asses and realize that Steam IS PC gaming for a large number of customers. If Mac publishers can't realize this, I hope you die! I'm not playing games any other way lately (Starcraft II, HoN being exceptions). I'd be even willing to pay a $5 DLC charge for a Mac version on Steam, but I'm not going to pay full-price again for a game I have the PC version of.

I know nothing about ports and have a couple questions.

1.Will the patches for the Windows version be applied to the Mac version? Are they delayed?
2. Will all the mods work on the Mac version?

Unlikely, due to porting costs. It will probably work like SupCom2: Buy the Mac version separately, register it on Steam.

as stated earlier, civ iv on os x was available for for free to people who bought civ iv for pc on steam.

As stated earlier, that was a special case for Aspyr.

1. Patches are delayed, unfortunately.
2. Many will probably work, but it's too early to tell.

I already purchased it on Steam, and would be very angry if they expect me to buy it again. I don't mind waiting a bit, but I do expect it to work.

What's more, I believe with Supreme Commander 2 it's a one way SteamPlay relationship. You buy the Mac version, register with Steam, and get the PC version for free. So Mac users get the PC version for free, but PC users don't get the Mac version for free. This way the Mac porting company can still make money per copy sold. This is mostly likely how Civ V for Mac will work.

Unless, Aspyr and 2K Games with co-operation from Valve/Steam can work out how many PC owners are additionally downloading and playing the Mac version, and then pay Aspyr per copy. That would require 2K games take a cut from the money they already made on their PC sales and giving it to Aspyr, which seems unlikely and would probably have the accountants up at arms especially with all the financial regulations on how you are allowed to book revenue, like the difficulties Apple had forcing them to sell iPod Touch OS updates for the longest time.

They'll probably do this, and we'll probably see crazy outrage like there was when they initially weren't going to give previous PC purchasers the Mac version.

While I'm happy Civ V is coming to the Mac, I'm annoyed it will be yet another Aspyr port rather than native.

Aspyr's ports are native. Sometimes they're not that great, though (*cough* Civ IV.)

I was under the impression they used a proprietary wrapper similar to Wine? As in the core game still makes DirectX calls, but they get translated to OpenGL?

I'd be happy to be wrong but if Civ IV was anything to go by, I'm much better off using Boot Camp.

I'm glad they will take their time to finish the game. The Windows version is awfully buggy at the moment. I've played a couple of games and I haven't been able to finish any because of showstopper bugs.

As soon as the worst bugs are ironed out and the AI is improved it should be a solid title in probably the best series of games all-time.

Aspyr and steam

won't happen.

the steam version will come directly from steam. Pretty sure that was the deal with civ 4 but please don't take my word for it.

I recently had a correspondence with someone under an NDA also making ports for 2K suggesting there were talks with steam but nothing has been resolved due to Steam's complicated business model.

the problem lies with 2K and other major publishers not releasing mac versions with ALL of the other versions under the same license. Go to bio-shock website and look at all the versions on the bottom of their page. Feral makes a port but its not listed with the rest. I'm hoping the 10.6.5 update comes out tomorrow. Supposed to have major graphics GLL changes. lets hope that gives dev's more incentive to get these games out when every other one comes out. Tired of feeling like a 2nd class gamer. Valve seems to be the only ones taking os x and apple seriously.

I hope for good por

Well, I don't have my faith put on Aspyr, I bought NWN2 a few years ago, and the port was horrible, horrible horrible, I mean they did a good job in making the worst mac port ever of a great game, so at the end i never finished the game just watch e finale in YouTube. But who knows maybe they decided to don't be lazy assess and do things right.

If it isn't released on Steam I will probably give the Mac version a miss but for those unable or unwilling to use Windows or Bootcamp, you can't go wrong by supporting Aspyr doing the Mac port and buying it. :)

Great news in the end.
