I really love Civ 5, but it's too darn slow. Even running it on my PC that's a quad core i5 + GTX 460s in SLI w/ 8GB of RAM, late in the game it starts taking 30+ seconds between turns.

On my latest MBP i7 w/ 8GB of RAM it's even worse. It's only playable with medium graphics at most, and the lag between turns late in the game is just sad.

If the normal 15% or so decrease in performance from PC -> Mac applies here as well, I think I'll just stick to dual booting to play it.

Agreed.

I think the wait between turns at the start of the game is the most annoying part of Civ V (although no stacking units is a close second). I was playing it on a i7 iMac with 12Gb RAM on Win7 (64bit) and the long delay between turns is there from the very start. Civ IV BTS slowed up around 1960 when there was a lot going on but at least you could wiz through the early part of the game quickly.

Nice.

The sad thing is that after some time, when the most shops will sell the pc version for 15-30€ with the expansions (the ones will get out sometime :p) the mac version here in Greece will be still priced around 50€.

I have no idea what the hell is wrong with those guys here...

I got civ 4 with 2 expansions for 15 euros last year... for my pc, because the mac version was about 50 the main game, and 30 each expansion...

Steam on the other hand doesn't made things easier as the pricing is similar and you can get a good price on weekend deals, but what the hell again? They sell it for (e.g.) 50$ and in euros it still 50, even with the difference we get in currency conversion...

The game industry are just so money hungry...

I have first gen alum unibody macbook (late 2008) running leopard. will this game work with that macbook?

Another great example of this is Age of Empires 3. Current price in the UK?

39 GBP or 61 USD!

Have a look: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Age-Of-Empi...2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1287578476&sr=1-12

Oh, and you can get the Complete package with AoE3+2 expansions for 25 GBP / 39 USD for PC.

DirectX9 is the solution

This is a common complaint. Running in DirectX9 mode will usually help a great deal with performance issues. The DirectX10/11 mode is buggy currently and may not be resolved until new graphics drivers are released and patches are made to the game. Performance is poor in that mode even with the best hardware available. The graphics quality is still very good in DirectX9 mode anyways. There will still be waits at the end of turns as the AI is very complex. It is multithreaded and having multiple CPU cores helps reduce wait times.

Hopefully the OS X version will be less buggy but I am not holding my breath.
