Its just a big ugly plastic gaming laptop. I dont really think its remotely comparable to a MBP.

i am not opposed to aesthetics, but when the only knock on a computer is the aesthetic appeal, then i think you've run out of complaints. laptops are not original oil paintings that you're going to keep for your lifetime and given their size, they are very easily moved out of sight. finally, do you spend more time looking at what's on the screen (in which case performance might be a tiny bit important) or looking at the closed case (in which case you might want to look for another hobby)?

Huh? Six months vs. four years doesn't sound like "almost the same" when talking about CPU technology.
The latest C2D (Penryn) is far from four years old. And besides: the performance of the QM-series isn't exactly overwhelming. Especially if you consider the power consumption.

In a notebook I'd rather have a 3.06 GHz C2D than the ('old school 45 nm) 720QM Processor.

Come on guys, Apple is obviously running behind in their deployment of new macbooks. It's a little pathetic trying to justify how last generation chips are just fine while everyone else is getting the latest technology. Even Steve Jobs admitted they are late with the macbooks...and OFCOURSE new macbooks are coming out...EVENTUALLY.

Regardless, the RDF is indeed strong with some of you guys if you have really convinced yourselves that the macbook technological gap is just fine, when it really isn't. You should demand more from Apple. They charge a premium for their hardware, yet offer decidedly old technology. Just look at the new Sony laptops, which are much better value for money. Oh ok, so they don't run OSX.

Anyway, I gotta buy a new laptop myself this month and if new Macbooks don't come out I'm not about to waste my money investing in old technology. My apps work on both windows or OSX, and while osx is sweet, its just not worth taking the performance hit and premium on the order of $1000 difference. For me, Macbooks are extra pricy anyway, because of Applecare always adds an extra $300 right off the top.

IMO, for me screen quality is one of the most importan asthetics for me, and frankly there are several other laptop makers out there that either match apple or exceed them in that department, ie. dell, lenovo.

so it goes....

The 720QM Clarksfield is NOT latest technology. It essentially is a 4 core Penryn with an i7 label.

I haven't seen any 'Waiting for Clarksfield' threads here. Have you?

Specs are one thing but why compare a fat arse gaming lump against probably the best designed laptop in history?

you show an angled view of a 17" laptop and compare it to the side-view of a 13" laptop and then make the stunning claim that the 17" laptop looks fatter. um. i have no desire to own a gaming laptop but if i were to "defend" apple and if i were to use aesthetics and/or bulk to do so, i'd at least try to be reasonable.

Do you really use 4 cores with your day to day use of a computer?
I've had a quad core for something like 4 years now and i can tell you i use 1 or 2 cores 99.9% of the time, even when multitasking.

the i7 720QM in your config is clocked at 4*1.6Ghz. If you only use two cores, you can turbo boost it up to 2*2.4Ghz which will be slower than a core2duo 2*3.06Ghz. And that's, of course, comparing it to an obsolete MBP.

on the other hand, you will have very nice performance while doing multi-cores benchmarks, and stuff like seti@home.

6 years ago did u really need 512mb of ram or a pentium 4? see where im going? (hint: the answer is yes)

Well the 17" MBP would actually look a lot thinner anyway. I'm sure its a poweful machine, but aesthetics DO matter to me. So does the ability to run Mac only apps. So does people laughing at me when i pull out 8.5lbs of ugly plastic gaming laptop in Starbucks.

Are you referring to that "Not To Worry" email? If so that's not confirmed to be a legit email from Jobs and saying "Not To Worry" says nothing. If this is not what you are referring to then please disclose where Steve Jobs said this verbatim?

i appreciate posting alternatives but this thing is the bulkiest, ugliest, heaviest notebook i've ever seen. you could just as well compare the MBP to a slim desktop pc

Don't understand why people are using this laptop as a yard stick for new MBPs, this is designed purely for gamers and by the looks of it is pretty much a desktop replacement. Don't know about anyone else but I wouldn't fancy lugging this around.

The MBP is a compromise between aesthetics, portability, performance and battery life. This Asus is completely no compromise,; portability, battery life and aesthetics are out of the window, this a pure concentration on power. Can't see Apple going down that road personally.

For those hoping for an Apple equivalent in the near future, you're gonna be seriously disappointed.

Believe me friend, out there no one gives a damn but their own laptop. Besides we really should not base our computing purchases on the approval of other people.

If I only had a nickel for every time someone created a thread saying:

"I was considering this laptop, do you think I'm an idiot for buying it?"

I can't wait for Arrandale any longer, I just bought a 3.06Ghz MBP, do you think that I made a good choice?"

I decided to go for a PC laptop instead of waiting for an Arrandale MBP, what do you think of these specs, did I make a good choice?"

At first you'd think they were just asking for recommendations but since they bought it already, in essence they just want the approval of the forum which is plain stupid because they feel guilty for jumping the gun and they need people to make them feel better.

The G73 is an awesome machine, depending on what you're using it for. If you were resigned to buying a 17" macbook pro this thing is a MUCH better value for your dollar. Enough so that you can probably pick up a low end MPB on the side [if you happen to need portability]

Well designed, it has actual heat dissipation and is quieter than my wife's iMac or alum macbook [limited edition non-pro ;) ]

For many people [and probably 90+% on this thread, the G73 is way overkill tho. I do a/v processing and encoding, so I tend to make good use of 8 cores. It's really only about 7 lbs, the other 1.5 being the power brick. It's actually not bad to transport if you had to, and can find a bag that'll FIT it.

Take it for what it's worth. I gave up on Arrandale, bought the G73 for my performance needs, a refurbished 1.86 air for my portability and daily surfing needs, and still came out a few hundred bucks ahead of what I was preparing to spend for a 17" macbook pro.

There ya go, a nice thread on the G73. . I swear it makes the "waiting for arrandale" threads look moderatly short by comparison ;)

I would be laughing when you are pulling a laptop out at Starbucks in general.

Hasn't anybody noticed that the price/performance ratio of PCs are improving all the time, laptops like the G73 would have cost twice as much not that long ago while MacBooks still offer the same (lousy) value.

You will not be getting a Radeon 5870 or dual disk drives in the MBP, if you want that, buy the Asus. If Hackintoshs were more fuss free, I'd probably get a HP Envy.

The same goes for the 17" MBP, which by all means is a desktop replacement that can be lugged around if needed. Sure, it does have really good battery life, though.

My, My, My...

Well I must say after being off this thread for a little bit, there are some really interesting comments flying around. I think we all have way too much time on our hands.... :D

I started this thread because I found interesting some of the hardware and price point the G73 was offering. There is an upgrade in that i7 chip that is available as well. I'm not a gamer, I was just looking at the over all hardware configuration and performance.

I'm also wondering why Apple is running so far behind the rest of the market and will this next update really be worth the wait.

I'm unable to do what I want to with my Photography at this point. My 6 yro PB just ain't cutting it any longer. Slooooooooooowwwww....

First of all, I have been throughly :apple: "Mac'd" I CAN'T go back.... :apple: :D There is absolutely no hope for me ever going back to a pc. OSX spoiled me rotten... :)

I'm a retired IT guy that spent too many years cleaning up Billy Boy Gates screw ups and being the MS R&D department for their premature releases of "bloat ware". I shudder at even the thought of playing with windows again. I have a Think Pad that I keep up and running for the wife but beyond that, forget it. When I retired I bought the computer I wanted. A 17" PB. That was 6 years ago and I never looked back...

I'm looking for that desktop replacement that I only have to lug from my coffee table up to my lap sitting in my easy chair with my feet up and a power point within easy reach. So, as you can see my requirements are much different then what most of you good people need in a laptop.

Hopefully we will get some relief soon. I also was wondering where everyone will go and what will they do when the new MBP's are in hand and this thread becomes irrelevant?

We all just might have to get a life... ya think??? :D:D:D Next Tuesday eh....

Well, Apple isn't really "behind"- OSX was by far more efficient than Windows, and with a limited set of hardware, application developers and such are better able to write code that taps into that power. The performance of a 2.8 GHZ C2D is still more snappy in OSX than a 2.66 GHZ Quad Core in Windows 7.

all those specs for 1699. I might buy one just for that price. But it seems to be sold out on newegg and anywhere else.. Selling like hot cakes (literally hot)
