You are joking right? It's just a phone. You're not going to die by not having it. It's a luxury item, provided at a cost, it's not a need.

I think the smiley face w/ tongue sticking out was a hint that it is in fact a joke.

I find it funny that people think ATT is doing us a favor by letting people upgrade early. Clearly they are doing this to lock as many people into contracts as possible before the iPhone goes to other carriers. Seems pretty obvious... They are doing it to help themselves.

And who's reaping the benefits of that business decision? The customers, who don't have to pay 600 bucks for a new phone.

Now granted, it doesn't mean i don't want the phone... i really do.. it is more than just an ordinary phone. It plays a pretty dominent roll in my life (especially as i am someone who's constantly traveling). But yes, i reallize that it is just a want and not a need... especially since i have a fully funtional and working 3GS.... but it doesn't mean i can't get jealous and question certain reasonings dang it :)

I love the logic to these threads:

  • User signs a contract with AT&T
  • AT&T abides by the contract
  • AT&T is a crook?

Very well put!

My wife wanted an iPhone so I bought a 3GS for her when they came out and about a month later I decided I would get one as well. The wife's number was the "main" line since it was the first one activated. I found out how AT&T handles upgrades and knew the main line would be eligible first. I called a CSR and had my line set as the "main" line. My wife doesn't care about upgrading her phone every year and I knew I would probably want the new iPhone. Doing this back a year ago gave my line the ability to upgrade now for the $199/$299 price.

Moral of the story, it pays to find out how things work and plan ahead.

Really? Then why are they not extending the offer to their other non-iPhone customers, i.e., letting customers upgrade early if they choose an iPhone. I mean if your goal is to lock up the iPhone universe then why just risk other customers getting away?

Also, do you think the iPhone 4 is that desirable to someone who really is begging to leave ATT? If I hated ATT's service that much I'd go buy an Android ASAP. But I don't hate the service that much, and do like the iPhone.

Maybe advancing people's upgrade 6 mos. is benefiting them, but you know what they are doing me a favor. I get the iPhone 4 mos. ahead of schedule. Thumbs up. People that hate ATT shouldn't take advantage of the offer thats all. No one is forcing them to do so.

I definitely believe the new iPhone is desirable enough for people to stay on with ATT if they were given the choice right now. Assume ATT did not do this and later this year iPhone comes out on Verizon you don't think people who have their upgrades come up during that time would think twice before sticking with ATT? Most people do hate ATT's service but stick around just for the iPhone.

Just ignore this idiot. He's just trolling. NOT everyone hates AT&T's service. I get better signal than Sprint in DFW. Verizon's rate plans are horrible even with my 25% discount. Your opinion is your own.

so if only one line is eligible for the $199/$299 price are the other lines still eligible for the $399/$499 price as long as a new 2 year contract is signed and the $18 upgrade fee is paid?

I do believe I said most people, not everyone. That was my opinion. What is wrong with you?

If people think Verizon is coming in a couple months then they are not going to reup w/ ATT next week, no.

I couldn't fit everything in the headline.
I have 2 lines in my family plan and last year I got 2 iPhones 3GS onthe day it came out (July 2009). I called AT&T today to find out why only one line was eligible, they said since it is a family plan only the main line is eligible for the discount EVEN THOUGH if I get the iPhone 4 on both lines, the termination fee will rise from $175 to $375.
The rep acted as if they were doing me a favor to allow me to upgrade one of the lines early, when they are raising the termination fee.
I spend around $230 a month on those 2 lines, I think If someone should be eligible, I think I should.

Am I overeacting?

Are you overreacting? Yes, you are. First of all, I don't think you are explaining everything. So, I will have to assume. AT&T is not stopping anybody from getting iphone 4. If you are not eligible, then you have an option to buy an iphone 4 at either full price or early upgrade price.
You are spending 230 dollars a month, but I bet 60 dollars are for data package and other 30 dollars is for unlimited family messaging. That leaves me that you are spending 100-120 dollars for two lines. The primary line is eligible because AT&T thinks that line is a primary holder who pays the bills. Is it not? If account is under your name, I don't see why you can't just take other person's upgrade. Are you sure that you are just upset because other line is eligible and you are not? Maybe, are you upset because you want iphone 4 on both lines?
Look, Mister. No carriers in the US allow customers to buy new phone with full discounted price every year. This is just not AT&T. This goes for everyone unless you are a primary line with 100 dollars worth of voice plan.
I am having an hard time to understand what your issue is. If customer service representative was rude, then we may have another problem. However, based on what you said, what you are asking for AT&T does not make sense.

Please, AT&T has an issue with their network and customer service, but Verizon is no where near perfect. They are far from it. Do I have to mention 350 dollars ETF?

Please show me the proof that Verizon iphone is coming this year. Without it, then you are just talking based on your imagination. This is America. You may speak as freely as you want, but if you want to make a point, then you must support with evidence. Right now, you are just frustrated because you cannot get a new iphone.

Actually I have a 3G and am qualified for the upgrade so your last point is invalid. And even if it was offered on Verizon now I would stick with ATT because of my family plan. I am merely speculating on ATT's motives.

You locked in for two years onto a 3GS. Yes, AT&T is doing you a favor by letting you upgrade that one line.

complaining here isn't gonna do anything. If you call them and be nice, but firm they may give you a break. You still have some leverage since your etf is currently 175. If you threaten to walk now, they will probably cave. If not, take your business elsewhere.

Having suffered at the hands of Sprint for years (but being too lazy to switch...this was before number "porting"), I can attest to the fact that AT&T has given me comparatively excellent service.

Mister? Who are you and what are you talking about? When did I say you that if you have iphone 3G, then you are not qualified?

Also, I don't care about verizon iphone because I had service with them and it was a nightmare. I was just answering the thread starter's question. If you want to quote me then point out what was wrong with my thread. Don't just my point is invalid. Which point is? Are we talking person to person?

You quoted his post and implied that his theory was only due to not being eligible to upgrade.

Right now, you are just frustrated because you cannot get a new iphone.

Excuse me did you read the quote that this post was based on? You were talking directly to me and said "...you are just frustrated because you cannot get a new iphone"...
