Reuters reports that AT&T is seeing "extraordinary demand" for the new iPhone 4S which became available for preorder at around 12:01 am Pacific time on Friday, October 7th. AT&T reveals that they have seen over 200,000 preorders for the iPhone 4S in the first 12 hours of sale.

For reference, last year, Apple announced that they saw a record-breaking 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders in the first day across all carriers in US, France, Germany, Japan and the UK. So, 2010's 600,000 number included all of Apple's launch carriers and over the first full day of sales.

This year, AT&T alone saw over 200,000 pre-orders in half the time. Unlike last year, the new iPhone 4S is now also available on Verizon and Sprint in the U.S, which will account for many other U.S. preorders. Despite being split across three carriers, AT&T says that this is "the most successful iPhone launch we’ve ever had".

Similarly, Apple also offered iPhone 4S preorders in several other countries outside the U.S. too (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK). So, it seems certain that the iPhone 4S will also be Apple's most successful phone launch ever.

200,000 just from one carrier? And people said this phone wouldn't sell. Great news. :apple:

No, we didn't say it wouldn't sell, we said it wouldn't be great.

Then again, I bought one, despite being dissatisfied with the offering.

Everyone knew this thing would sell.

The "people" don't care about specs. The "people" are not analysts. The "people" don't sit all day on macrumors. The "people" wan't iPhones.

Any guesses on the total number? I have no idea, but I'm going with close to a million. Or is that way off?

Not only this, but I would say (just judging from my own experience this morning) that the pre-order process was not as terrible as it was last year.

This year I tried for a little bit and the page/apple store app wouldn't load. Went back to bed and when I woke up for work I tried again and everything went right through with no issues.

Wait you mean all the experts on the internet were wrong?!

Lol. Experts? The 4s is just as good if not better than most offerings out there. People over reacted.

Ordered my 64gb.

And before all the idiots come with thier "iSheep" comments just know, if you make a good quality product and stand behind it, people will buy it. Apple does that.

RIP Steve.

Great news ! Was good to see international Apple Stores got their delivery times set back to 1-2 weeks within a couple of hours of opening. They must have been peppered with pre-orders. Way to go Apple !

No you are wrong.

People do sit on mr all day and then bash iPhone 4s AND then order at 3am

The apple store ordering for a family plan approved upgrade was complicated/inefficient. Went directly to Att and was successful. So maybe there were many others in the same situation which added many more phones to Att's total so far.

I was secretly hoping it wouldn't sell so I could just walk in to Carphone Warehouse at the end of the month and get one.
