"Pre-ordered devices will ship on or around Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011."
-from AT&T's website.

Glad I got my oder in! The status is "pending shipment".... is it next friday yet?

Another thing to ponder (I don't think anyone mentioned this yet), is that the ATT announcement only mentions the 4S. I bet they sold a good amount of the "Free" 3GS on top of the 200,000 4S sales.

Well done Apple, but why the hell would anyone want ATT? I'm trying to run away from it.

Experience with any carrier can vary depending on location and other circumstances: mine with ATT has been fine (except for their yet having to make good on "expanding our rural outreach" which I have been hearing since God was a toddler). I use the iPhone from upstate New York areas like exurban areas of Southern Tier north to the Finger Lakes, and as far north and west as Rochester. I have rarely had dropped call issues, the call quality has always been great and their customer service has invariably been polite, informed (or willing to go find out what the deal is and get back to me) and informative. So for me, what's not to like? Nothing. So I stuck with ATT.

Of course I would be happier if my iPhone could actually see a tower from my kitchen table... but hope springs eternal. Maybe some politician will buy a vacation home around here sometime. That's probably all it would take!

Congrats

Congrats to the fellas that did get their preorders through.

Most likely this phone will sell as good or better than the previous ones.

To the trolls: I don't think that the good sales numbers have to do with the fact that Mr. Jobs Died. I think the trend of good numbers will continue over the next quarters.

I will look with a little envy on your 4S's. I pass on getting the latest this time. Usually renew cellphone every 2 years when my ATT contract is due...

I will be in line next year for iPhone 5 or whatever the name or form factor is.... and I know it will sell like hot cakes too.

Disclaimer: I am not an analyst.

We'll probably see another surge on or about November 18. That's when folks who got their iPhone 4s on day of release become eligible for AT&T upgrade pricing.

Voice and data at the same time... check dropping the voice call every 5 minutes... check. I left AT&T the minute Verizon got the iPhone 4.

I never had a dropped call with AT&T. Of course, I never had one with Verizon either, that I can remember.

I ordered mine from apple and it just says processing. Mine is an ATT phone!

at&t is making a killing. 200,000 preorders were made through at&t, and that's not counting the at&t activated iPhones preordered through Apple.

Dang, at&t!

I personally want at&t to succeed in the wireless market, but not in the home services market. That's where Comcast comes in.

here we go again, for all the naysayers here that said this update was lame.
People forget the geeks/people here at MR are a microcosm of Apple's market.
I knew this phone would be a success. iPhone 4 had a great design and was a winner and now the 4S is a much better one.
Buying it last night was a nightmare. I hope Apple/AT&T will fix this online system next time.

Thats it? 200k orders in 12 hours? They can't build a server infrastructure to handle that? Not lets give our customers who are dying to give us there money a piss poor user experience?

Really this is the company that built my Macbook Air?

200,000 in 12 hours isn't the problem.

It's that 100,000 of them are trying in the first 5 minutes.

Wow! 200,000 iPhone buyers live in rural Nevada?

Seriously though if AT&T is getting 200k then you got to figure the others are getting 2 to 4 times that. Most people where waiting for a new phone to switch carriers. My wife and I and literal everyone we know who has an iPhone is switching form AT&T with the 4s. One friend of ours is even paying to break his contract. There are a few people that bought their first iPhone last January to get Verizon.

AT&T is dead last in customer satisfaction, and has been for a long time.

I have had good times with my AT&T plan. They just gave me unlimited mobile to ANY mobile service for being a "valued customer" for so long. Now, the only time I use minutes is when I call a landline... almost never!

I'm eligible for the 4S as my 3GS contract is done, but I also have another line with the new HTC Inspire 4G, and I'm really impressed with it so far. It does voice-activated stuff, but I'm sure Siri will nicer. I'm thinking if I wait a year longer, I can upgrade to whatever is awesome then, and always be one year away from eligibility for a new phone upgrade as each two-year contract ends. Muahahahaha?

Long live Apple!

Siri feature

well this should really help their stock being the most successful launch. ill admit i was one of those people who thought this wouldn't sell and i was wrong. i also bought one  i think siri played a major role in this. siri was the biggest reason i bought it. after watching the keynote it really impressed me and i couldn't believe this device could do something like that. everybody i have showed that section of the keynote to ends with there mouths dropped. great job Apple! despite not having a redesign, you managed a way to bring another big hitter to the plate.

I think people are underestimating the impact and appeal of Siri. I am moving from my 3GS to a 4S, and looking forward to using Siri, integrated into iOS. I fully expect a Siri feature to be built into the next Mac OS X iteration (10.8). Call it part of Steve's vision.

Thinking outside the *bubble*

Call me crazy but from the technophiles I associated with are calling this :
iPS / i4S/ = Iphone For Steve.....
All of them and their friends for the most part are purchasing , not only because it is whats under the hood instead of the aesthetics , but to pay tribute to the last iconic edition of Steve's Era.
I had grunted and complained about the new pricing tier that has been set in place, BUT I dont care about it! I plan on shelling out the $694.43 , adding the 2 year Apple+ and being happily content with what I have purchased!

Why? Because its the love of passion for the technology......

Well I predicted 2 million units sold within the first 72 hours when it launches, so certainly seems possible.

None of this is surprising. The iPhone is offered in way more places and on way more carriers now and it instantly is the best smartphone on the market, supplanting the previous best smartphone on the market the iPhone 4.

No, we didn't say it wouldn't sell, we said it wouldn't be great.

Then again, I bought one, despite being dissatisfied with the offering.

Everyone knew this thing would sell.

****, congrats on a device that will be rocking iOS8 while the 4 gets parked. This is going to be a mirror image of the 3G - 3GS leap, then some (Camera, Siri, etc).

Upgraded from 2 16GB 3GS's, wife and self. No problem continuing the grandfathered unlimited plan through AT&T (30bucks). Only difference is we will be rocking 2 32GB 4S's next Friday; now if I could only get this Otterbox 4 vs 4S thing straight.

No... People said it was doomed because it did not have a bigger screen and because it was not keeping up with android. LMAO.

So for 2011 the top 3 smartphones will be the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S, and the iPhone 3GS.

Any guesses on the total number? I have no idea, but I'm going with close to a million. Or is that way off?

I believe the iPhone 4 sold 1.3 million in 72 hours. I am predicting a whopping 2 million in 72 hours of actual release for the 4. We shall see. I certainly think it will surpass the 1.3 million the 4 sold.

If I plan to buy this phone unlocked should I have preordered today, or was that not an option? I want to be guaranteed a device, but I was an indecisive iPhone 4 owner that didn't preorder. Any ideas if I will have a hard time getting an unlocked device when it launches?

I would cancel your preorder.

Apple has announced they will have unlocked versions for sale in November.

I can't see the demand for them being nearly as high, given the $649++ price. Yes, some people will want it, but the bulk of sales are going to be subsidized/contract sales.
