I have to say this though, most of those countries aren't as geographically dispersed. People forget this when comparing US networks with other countries.

This is a contributing factor to the poor cellular service in the US. Irrespectively, when it comes to mobile service, the United States is a third world country.

I think it is quite clear by now to people even living in the north pole that AT&T sucks.
Well, claim what you want, but I've been on the majority of carriers over the years and AT&T in Phoenix is the one that I've had the most success with. It's not perfect, no. I have certain spots that consistently drop the connection, but that's relatively rare and I actually have very few dropped calls. They also manage to offer a much more competitive price than the other carriers do, so I'm fine with AT&T. My main problem right now is that 200mb/month is just a bit too small, but I don't really want to pay $10 extra just to jump up to 2gb that I won't use. And that's annoying because I'm certain AT&T planned it that way.

AT&T said they were investing 18 billion in spectrum purchases and equipment upgrades on their Facebook page. In addition, paying iphone subsidies aren't included in capex figures.

AT&T only posts capex for their entire company. Verizon breaks out their landline and wireless figures. So multiple analysts do their best to figure our AT&T each year.

The figures I've found are all similar... that AT&T Wireless' capex has ranged from $4 billion in 2007 to about $6 billion in 2009.

Basically, ATT consistently spends about 10-20% less than what Verizon spends. At least, up until now. AT&T has promised to spend an extra $2 billion this year on wireless, which would match Verizon expenditures.

As for iPhone subsidies, ATT has previously publicly talked about them during stock meetings. I recall last year that they had about a billion dollars tied up in iPhone and... drat, have to go now. Later!

SIGH....even when a high ranking Verizon Spokesman says "No plans to carry the iPhone in the immediate future" people still insist that one is coming this summer... SMH...immediate future definitely covers next week's announcement I'm sure

AT$T can burn where the sun doesn't shine

98% is AT&T's propagandistic figure. Are you really that easy to fool? That's like believing a BP report that only 1000 gallons of oil spilled in the gulf and that the oil is a new non-sticky kind. If AT&T were truly going to lose money from 98% of their users, their stock would have tanked on the announcement. Make no mistake, AT&T is in the business of MAKING money.

Agreed! AT$T is all about making money and the new tiered structure is terrible. There should have been 3 tier levels:

200 MB and under - $10
1GB - $20
3GB - $30
And for the heavy users an unlimited plan for "DataPro" at $60. Maybe $60 is too high, but there needs to be some sort of unlimited plan for business users.

And yes, the way we live our lives in the digital world has forced wireless carriers to nix unlimited offerings. I saw this tiered structure first come from Verizon, so I KNEW AT$T wasn't going to be far behind. Sprint and Tmobile will be next ... then broadband. It's inevitable.

AT$T: I get why you have tiered plans. HOWEVER, I do not get why you are charging for tethering or, at the very least, why the tethered products don't utilize the same usage bin??? What I mean is: if I have an ipad and an iphone, then why isn't the data used from the same data pool allotted to me? I really get upset over your company. I despise your pricing and your plan structures--not just data, but your text and voice plans were/are terrible as well. C'mon 200texts (incoming and outgoing) as your lowest offering? One of my best friends doesn't even like to text because of the costs. Of course I'm going to need more (as well as "98%" of AT$T users) and different carriers offer it at lower prices.

Case in point: Tmo offers $40 for 1000 minutes and then for another $30, you get unlimited web and text. AT$T, you offer nothing even close to that price, and I haven't even checked other competitors like VZ and Sprint. Shame on you and I cannot wait for your exclusivity contract with Apple to expire, so you can fall, falter, and fail without your Apple crutch to support you. I hate you guys.

LOL nah "Immediate future" means friday! Just kidding :D

op is an idiot an isnt getting an iphone cause it's never leaving att!

We don't know that. In the extreme twist of fate it could stay on AT&T. But the odds are against that though. My guess and i'm just speculating that it be on Verizon's network in 2012.

And besides it's not like the iphone is really "Leaving" it will still be on AT&T's network even when another carrier gets it.

But i would love to see how the LTE roll out effects Verizon's finances when they planned to roll out LTE. The economy was in better shape. And their rollout may not be as massive as people think it will be.

At Least in AT&T's case from what i heard rolling out LTE will be more cheaper for them because they can Roll out HSPA + to some area's while rolling out LTE to bigger population areas

But i don't claim to be right i'm just speculating

You really need to take a breath or something. AT&T like all companies are FOR PROFIT

All companies charge for tethering. Sprint does on their current 3G phones and will do so on their 4G phone's as well. Verizon does. They all do.

Now i think at this point we all get that your not satisfied with that. Well no one knows what to tell you then. Because Tiered pricing will be the norm with sprint and t-mobile most likely being the last providers to go to that pricing.

It's going to happen. Regardless of what you think of tethering everyone charges and it's a buisness descion. So i get why they are charging for it.

If your unhappy leave but wherever you go your going to run into the same thing.

I personally could care less about tethering. I have HSD service at my house and 3G works flawlessly on my iPhone so i have no reason to tether

If you dislike the rate plans and want something cheaper Verizon is not the answer for you.

At Least in AT&T's case from what i heard rolling out LTE will be more cheaper for them because they can Roll out HSPA + to some area's while rolling out LTE to bigger population areas

What you probably heard was that AT&T (starting this Spring) began upgrading their remaining 2G sites to 3G, using equipment that can more easily later be outfitted with LTE.

So the latest 3G sites being installed starting from now, will cost less to go LTE later.

The downside is that all the sites previously upgraded to 3G (including all the major population centers) will still need a costly total revamp for LTE.

Yeah, duh. That's why companies are businesses and not non-profit organizations. I get that. I'm saying AT$T likes to charge exorbitant costs as compared to its competitors for pretty much the same plans (AT$T's degraded services also included), and that's being generous. If you shop around, you will see other carriers giving better deals/bundles/plans than what AT$T offers. But AT$T charges for anything/everything for little return because they simply can. After all, they have the iphone. Their services are bad, their plans are overpriced, and their customer service is quite atrocious.

And yes, I could leave ... but I'm in between a rock and a hard place. I love Apple products because they work, look nice, and Apple has excellent customer service. What I don't like is AT$T. Even their commercials are bad, imo, but that's besides the point.

So ...... now with AT$T's new changes, it's starting to seem like tethering a new jailbroken iphone is going to be the solution to my issue. AND I bet I'm not going to be the only one.

There's how many million iPhone owners and we all pay $30 a month since 2007 for the data plan. WTF does AT&T spend all that money on...

I spend $1000 a year for our families data. I'm sure some of you pay more. It's just air... right? lol

Never been on AT&T? Talking bad about them with no experience other than 'opinions'?

Your argument is invalid.

Ok so I'm on AT & T and it sucks. So there.

His argument IS valid. Its like saying... you don't own a Yugo, so you don't know they are bad cars! He is completely valid. However, a little delusional since the Verizon CEO said that they aren't getting the iPhone anytime soon... so... we are STUCK with AT&T.

ATT is spending the most money on spectrum purchases and tower construction than any other American carrier.

Im pretty sure that Verizon spent more money and purchased a good bit more spectrum for 4G than AT&T did. And Verizon has always spent more on building out their network. That may not be the case any more when it comes to their 3G network, because they are busy building out their LTE network and are going to be launching it in 30 markets this year. AT&T is now building out their 3G network which still isnt on par with Verizons coverage of 3G network.

Actually...

Auction 73 ended with the highly publicized open access C-Block going for $4.74 billion to Verizon. The entire auction raised $19.592 billion.
