Well, I can't pass a law, can you? No? Thought so.

So, we're back to you balking like a true "patriot", that if people don't like something, they should just shut their mouths. What a democratic mindset.

Last time I checked the "democratic mindset" embraces voting with dollars, not seeking sanctions against business for legal activity.

By the way, love your use of the icons.

Major bummer

While I respect Apple and AT&T's right to protect their investment, AT&T does NOT offer service in my area (yes, I do live in the US). So, I'm completely unable to get the iPhone without unlocking. I was prepared to pay full price for the new iPhone, and the subsidy doesn't really matter since I can't even get AT&T. Lame, lame, lame... If Apple was going to lock service to one carrier, why couldn't they pick a carrier that actually has service available in every state?

omg!

uuuuuh i'm so busted, here in mexico we don't have iphones, so we have to wait to somebody go to th United States, so now the 3g will be mor imposible to reach, thanks at&t :(

it'll be quite a shame if i can't just take it home and activate it, as that appealed to me when i purchased the first gen. i hate waiting in line and the stupid bs of the people at the att stores. you'd think there would be some other method to prevent unlocking though. certain sim card requirements or something that would be att only or something.

. Also I guess the Apple store is gonna start doing the activation too?

I think its kind of cool (less the $720 fee for online per two (2) years... Might have to try and get an Apple friend to see if he/she can get me a discount then talk to some AT&T friends.

Anyway, have you ever been to some of the stores? The one in Pasadena California had big vans of chinese people every time I was there all buying 5 iPhone packs. One friend told me he saw a guy that spoke no english hand him a post it with the number 5 on it and phone beside it. LOL.

Seems like the chinese folks are going to be quite peeved.

To simple to think, ahhh, reduced price...nope, once again, there's a catch. Just like the mini/macbook (3.8X faster) except for games (translation), no PRO APPS for YOU!! Or non MATTER iMac's (translation, no GRAPHIC WORK FOR YOU) or crappy FIREWIRE on iMAC/Macbook (translation, you have to buy a PRO (MBP or MAC PRO) for PRO use, period, even though the technology is there.

Well, when it comes to your mindset, that is the icon that springs to mind.

You don't even try to pack it in: You're saying a company can and sould be able to do any- and everything, because consumers can just vote with their money. That would work all fine in utopia, but in the real world it doesnt.

How do you "vote with your money" if you say aren't satisfied with the service AT&T provides, yet want or need 3G. Oh, and you live in the country where companies are protected as individuals?

Or, hell, let's say a company screws over their existing customers, do you vote with your wallet there too, and go "ah, ****, I should just keep my mouth shut, and let other make the decistion to buy or not to buy from the company's press releases, because if I speak up, I must like communism," as you implied earlier.

Seriously, you come across as one of the people who consider themselves to be "true patriots": You know the flagwavers who like guns.

Oh, with regards to music, I still like Simple Minds. In the real world, however ...

thank god I didn't sell my 1st gen iPhone!

But even if I did, I'd pay cash for the phone itself - let's see some penalties now suckas!!

But of course, you know the usual people will unlock the iPhone :p

Thank you for being the first person to articulate a very strong argument against this new deal, and for articulating the action you are going to take against it. It is refreshing to hear a real world example of both the problems it causes, and how you will vote with your dollars next time around. I mean that absolutely sincerely.

If you look at an AT&T coverage map it says I should have coverage in many more places than I do, the map is a lie, pure and simple. Had the map been accurate I wouldn't have bought the phone to begin with.

I've had several times when the EDGE network went down and I needed it. I went to sleep in Waddy, KY after surfing a bit on the phone when I woke up I wanted to check the miles to my stop, no EDGE. The EDGE was down until I got into South Carolina. A couple days later it was down in on my trip from Albuquerque, NM to Phoenix, AZ. It was out between Boise, ID and Salt Lake City for several days. I use my phone everyday in my route planning and I can't have these silly outages.

I've never had an EDGE outage with T-mobile. That alone is reason enough to unlock your iPhone.

The new iPhone is quickly becoming less and less appealing. The $10 increase puts the new iPhone almost back at its original price price over 2 years. Plus the in-store activation?

Its not just the $10. Its the fact that you have to resign a contract for 2 years that's the killer for me. I would be upset if the price was the same but you had to resign. I hate contracts.

I totally agree with you; AT&T is horrible. I look forward to letting them know by not buying their products and services. And if they commit fraud to induce me into a contract, I look forward to suing the hell out of them and, if their fraud is strong enough, to bringing in the Attorney General's office for criminal charges.

does anyone know if ATT is planning on making a pay as you go plan available for this like they did for the old iphone?

Yes, like all their other phones. For those who don't want the credit check or who have bad credit and don't want to put the deposit down.

It's more a pre-pay plan. The rates are higher though, and you will still need to agree to the 2 year contract.

When they ask for your SSN, you give them 888-88-8888

If you're hoping that there's a cellular provider that has perfect coverage at every location in the country, then you'll be waiting a loooong time. If they chose a provider that covers your area, then others that now have service would be complaining about the holes.

Then BE A MAN, AND SAY CONCISELY, ARTICULATELY WHAT YOU WANT. A law? Criminal charges? What do you want?

so you can still do it at home just as long as u do it within 30 days? also i have a iphone already so will they let us just put in our sim cards or what? hows this going to work. i cant see them activating them all on launch day it would take hours

espo

Very good point. "Within 30 days" would stipulate you leaving the store without activating, right?

Here's an interesting fact: Anyone that knows exactly how activation is going to be handled isn't saying. Anybody that's saying doesn't know.

The activation info will be revealed later.

Yes, I know. Simple terms and all that, ironically.

I wan't global companies to have ethics and not by sleight-of-hand trying to screw the customers over. I want companies to be open and transparent.
Oh, and I want to laugh at people who apparently think it's a good idea to give companies the same rights as the citizens in their country.

I think waht is going on here, is since AT&T is subsidizing the phone. they may be taking the stance that if you do not activate your phone, you will be automatically charged (and taken to collections) for the price of the full phone, and then they may put a block on the FCC CAP# preventing it from being able to be activated anywhere else. But if you do want it activated through AT&T, they will not let you until the penalty is paid.

kinda like what Sprint does, if your payment lapses or you cancel your contract you are charged an early termination fee. then you cannot re-activate your phone without paying the fee and a re-connection charge.

This may not be apple's doing ,but may be AT&T's.

• Well if they can ZAP the phone let alone find the phone (not sure if I like that or not, perhaps if it was stolen) then maybe they can charge you - on the other hand, if you're buying as a gift, I don't see what they can do. They certainly cannot charge the purchaser if he/she is buying it as a gift - not sure if I could stand seeing the chinese lines again at apple store and their so called 5 iphone gift bags though.

Then again, if they can figure out how to buy a $200 phone, and if you're signed up with AT&T already, it would be pretty dope to somehow get the 3G for free, a savings of $720, this, one would think, would be quite popular, similar to OSX86, the hacking site.

Sounds like hes saying there will be penalties if its not activated with att in 30 days, so taking it home wouldn't matter, you are still stuck with att. or receive the penalties, sounds fair.

Then start laughing. The only person who brought up "same rights as citizens" is you.

As for no "sleight-of-hand" tricks by companies, I agree. And I have good news for you; there's a thing called "class action lawsuits" that takes those companies to the ground.

So again, I ask you, what do you want that you don't have?
