+1.

Pretty sure this site is run by Americans, and most of its customers are American. Rule number one of running a company: know who your customers are.

First of all, 58% of Apple revenues come from outside the US.

Secondly, I am pretty sure there is a very sizeable portion of users here who are NEITHER US citizens NOR residents.

Finally, the fact that a domain is ".com" tells nothing about its origin or owners.

So in a nutshell, is this SlingPlayer news any relevant to other markets? Can we watch live TV with SlingPlayer in other countries? Thank you.

This is about time and I can only think that it has to do with pending competition. 5 years on an exclusive contract with AT&T was just too long Apple and we have paid the price for it. This should have debuted with 3G access and not an afterthought of almost 1 year!

I personally think that Apple didn't expect the iPhone explosion much like AT&T didn't either. Besides, I think Apple is very coy about product releases with expectations for continued revenue on hardware upgrades. This is why we are waiting with baited breath for a camera in the Touch or the iPad. They will hold out just long enough that once I buy one the week after they will release the upgrade. HAHAHA. So they hold out on 3G and then give it to us. They hold out on cameras and we will eventually get them as margins drop low enough to spice things up a little again. Seriously, just capacity upgrades get a little boring.

next with uverse?

It's been long rumored that AT&T would build an app / add functionality to watch content stored on your uverse dvr on your iphone. I really hope they're still working on that and that it's not too far away. It would be nice if I could basically have sling functionality with the dvr I already have. Since it's already AT&T hardware and service, I don't see why they're not all over that. I kinda thought that it may have been a contributing factor as to why sling was only wifi for a while... AT&T wanted to support uverse as much as or more than sling. Guess not :(

You should probably then just ignore any news stories that reference AT&T. Trust me: you're likely better off. iPhone users around the world have been in a better position than those in the US due to AT&T. Maybe it's beginning to get better for us.

Well, at least you still have unlimited data over there...virtually no other carrier offers this.

I'm curious if the app is going to change content quality depending if you are on 3g or wifi.

I know folks have jailbroke phones with the 3g hack...how is quality streaming over 3g?

In my experience: crappy.

It's cool that they're allowing it over 3G, but as a practical matter you're going to be looking around for wifi whenever you want to watch something on your Slingbox.

I have slingplayer mobile on my BB and it is so worth it! I don't miss a sports game at all :D Now i might have to purchase an iPhone 4G in June. If only there's a program that can connect to BBM then i'll be a happy man:)

A Spanish friend of mine offered me a free dinner in case I show him an alternative for watching live Spanish football (I mean REAL football as in soccer) on his iPhone.

Is the SlingPlayer a possibility? He told me he uses satellite TV to watch his matches.

This is awesome! I am totally stoked!

Now if they would just enable some basic multitasking capabilties I'd go from being 99.99% happy with my non-JB iphone to a full 101%. I really just want to be able to stream audio (and now Sling I guess) while browsing the web - not much else.

Yes.

Hope quality is decent better than youtube?

I agree. This quote from a story on wired.com today seems to indicate that it will certainly be lowwer quality than wifi- (as expected).

AT&T’s announcement claims that while the Sling app had always been optimized for 3G, AT&T “worked with” Sling to make it even more efficient (i.e., degraded video and/or audio quality until the Sling app consumed an acceptable amount of bandwidth). Read More http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/02/att-will-allow-optimized-sling-app-for-iphone/#ixzz0eb4N3Mdy

Unless it's worse than YouTube, I think I'll pretty happy as I expect I'll only use it over 3g in a pinch anyway.

If Sling deciding to rework an app that is optimized for the iPad, then it looks as if I will be spending a pretty penny on an iPad and Slingbox in the near future. :D

Well, most of the stuff people over the pond complain aobut are stuff that ATT gets the blame for stopping. Tethering is the only thing on top of my head I know we have here but isnt available in the US. But if ATT offers slingplayer over 3G I guess it brings hope for the rest of us, just as if they stop something we can expect it to be stopped over here.

Still waiting for Skype... a more useful application over 3G, IMO.

Well considering most people's iPhone, ya know, have a phone already on them. Skypes kind of, not a big deal. IMO, this is. This act could change how lots of apps function, for the better.

An article with AT&T in the headline that is ranked positive? Did hell freeze over?

Wish list:

1. MMS: Check
2. $10 500mb tether add-on: Not yet (convenience)
3. $5 500 text plan: Not yet (should be free w/data)
4. Faster 3g: Check (recently went up to 5mbps here)
5. Sling over 3g: Check
6. VOIP over 3g: Check
7. 3g outside big cities: Not yet
8. 4g: Not yet

AT&T has definitely been making some progress. Might actually keep them around if they keep checking off my wish list.

AT&T is making an effort to improve it's network and services (although personally I've never had any problems). We have this and their announcement they are about to spend multiple billions to improve their network. Don't think they aren't listening... I think they were overwhelmed by the iPhone and its demands for awhile and may finally be catching up.

I hope this can start to quell the "AT&T is evil and abuses their customers, Verizon is the best!" talk. They are both businesses, they both base their decisions on the same things. Neither of them are benevolent entities - they don't exist for that.
