i dunno how true this is or not....its a rumor, but...
after sept 14, they going to start charging for the plan without your consent..
again, i dunno if its true or not....

If you don't know if it's true or not, then don't post the (mis)information.

All we can deduce is that they want something to happen by September 14. Those who do nothing now will probably receive further, more urgent-sounding text messages in the future. We might know more by then.

its a rumor, so no rumors on macrumors? hehehe sorry, couldnt resist..

That wasnt a rumor, just misinformation.
I think I heard but not sure if its really true but might be maybe not :D

ummm

i think its still a rumor....define rumor...

1 : talk or opinion widely disseminated with no discernible source
2 : a statement or report current without known authority for its truth

So, rumor has it, that they are going to charge you come Sept 14 for a Iphone package if they detect you have a iphone.

I know, theres a fine line between rumors and misinformation though. :D

ohh, i totally agree...but in this case, its alittle towards the rumor side.

Im not making this up, i read it off another site from a person who called CS and asked about the message. This *supposedly* what the person said when asked what was going to happen come Sept 14 =)

So since i heard it from another person, its a rumor...since we cannot confirm nor deny that its going to happen.

Misinformation would be when we KNOW FOR CERTAIN it will NOT be happening...therefore we would of been misinformed about this...

Dont you agree?

please dont take offense to this....im not arguing with you at all =) im a lover, not a fighter...

Yes, we'll just have to wait and see where it goes.
But I highly doubt they will force data onto everyone like that. That could open a can of worms for AT&T.

honestly, i see it happening...of course they going to go about it in a professional manner, hoping not to lose business in the process.

What sucks is that they are within their rights to do so...im surprised they havent done it yet. Dam ToS!! :D:D

We got a month to ponder whats going to happen....we should start a poll hAHAH

I dont think they can afford more bad publicity.
They already take so much heat for no MMS and internet tethering. Rejected apps on the app store and many others.
This would make it alot worst and they'd lose tons of subscribers to other providers that let the customer pick wether they want data or any other service and not force it into their contract.

How does AT&T know?

How does AT&T know that someone has a jailbroken iPhone? Is this through the IMEI?

What can one do without having to pay for an unwanted and overpriced data plan, but still be on AT&T?

This is not detecting that you are jailbroken per se as it detects that you have an Iphone (through the IME) that has not been activated through itunes. Therefore, by default, if you have an iphone on the AT&T network and you did not activated it through itunes, it must be jailbroken.

As to your other question, it depends on how vigorously AT&T wants to enforce the data plan requirement on those without a data plan. I suspect that in the pursuit of more revenues, they might do it. When and if that is the case, my wife will have to say goodbye to her iphone as a phone as she doesn't use data, but likes having an ipod with her for pictures and music. So she will carry her sim-less iphone plus her old Samsung phone.

I got that same message but I don't want to wait until sep 14 cuz I don't want the data plan on my bill. Is there anyway to make att think I have a different phone or should I jus put the SIM in my old Sony ericsson.

i dont think so...ATT will know you have a iphone due to the IMEI number.

Ive been hearing that you can get away with it if you dont make a voice call or send a SMS, this way your IMEI will not transfer and ATT will not know. Now, does this work? I dunno personally.

I kinda knew this was going to happen. I heard a rumor they were going to do something like this (i guess the source of the rumor is good).

Its simple the way i heard it....if you have a smartphone you need a data plan, if you have a iPhone, you need a iPhone plan. If you try and use a non iphone plan with the iphone, ATT will end up charging you for the data if it detects the iphone on your account.

All in ALL, we all knew it was going to happen....was just a matter of when...

i dont understand why anyone would want a crippled iphone. it seems like alot of expense and risk. all to end up relying on a wifi connection which you could have gotten the same thing with an ipod touch and kept whatever phone you already had.

When you turn your phone on, it logs onto the cellular network, when you logon, your iPhone sends information about the device to the network, and thus tracking, etc. can be done.

If you're not paying for their unlimited data plan and you have an iPhone, your iPhone is jailbroken. There's no way around that. And an MMS workaround? Not sure what you're getting at?

Don't pay for data, but pay for everything else in large monetary values. I was getting at the point that they know you have an iPhone, jailbroken or not, and if it's jailbroken, AT&T will eventually find you and get you to pay for the plan if you are not.

That is wrong. Can't people buy iPhone off from somewhere else in the world that is factory unlock and use sim card from At&T? According to your words, if i am using AT&T sim card for my factory unlock iPhone then my iPhone must be JB?

What kind of moronic conclusion is that?

You can't make phone calls with an iPod Touch.

The iPhone is ONE device, that is exactly like the iPod Touch with the added extra of a camera, phone, and the ability to have data on the move. Some people just don't need this data on the move part.

Thus the reason I refuse to Jailbreak the iPhone.. Im just waiting on a customization app.. but Im not holding my breath.

That would get them in an UNBELIEVABLE amount of legal trouble. That would be EXTREMELY stupid of them on their part.
