Morality issue is interesting, though

Normally, I'm not a big fan of hacking but I feel like so many iPhone buyers got screwed by Apple/AT&T in so many ways, that in the case it's justified.

For the first time, consumers, not only pay hundreds of dollars for their cell phones, they're tied to a two year contract, with no choice of carrier. What's more, according to the fine print on the box, you're stuck with AT&T for 5 years. The two year contract is only for rates, after that AT&T can raise them to whatever level the market will bear.

In France, it's illegal for a cell phone company to force the consumer to buy both the product and the service from the same company. It should be illegal here too.

I had an old cingular plan, and just wanted to add a data plan to it. The at&t people told me I couldnt do that and would have to upgrade, as well as being some of the most rude people I have ever dealt with in my life. I called at&t corporate and tried to talk to them. No avail, so I was just gonna get a new plan. When I activated through itunes, I was able to keep my old voice plan and just add a data plan.

What did we learn? At&T are a bunch of morons

Should we act more like France here in the U.S.? I don't think so. As has been noted in other threads, France is limiting consumer choices. I don't want politicians telling me how to run my business, especially a country like France which can't even keep their film and tv industry viable without restricting the consumer's choices to: anything the viewer wants, as long as it's French.

I don't mind the government stepping in to squash monopolistic practices that would serve to limit consumer choices. However, in this case, nobody is making anyone buy an iPhone and there are plenty of other choices.

It's hardly screwing a company out of money. I am in the same situation but haven't been outed. we chose to use our iphones without the data plan - that's our choice and why should be bullied into this. If they do this with me, I'll immediately switch carriers since I'm not in contract anymore.

What does the code do? Will it give you back your service? Lock your phone? What did they say, exactly? I'm sure a lot of people want to know.

thanks
Why bullied into this?
Terms of service.
Open and shut case,
Don't like the terms?
Don't buy the phone.
Cruel to be kind situation.

Are you sure about this? I think its against the law to offer more then a 2 year contract for cell service. That is why they don't go any longer. AT&T can raise the price anytime they want- they normally will not as if they make you too mad you might pay them the 175.00 and to them where to go.

What is displayed on your account page is based upon what IMEI number you've given to AT&T. If you change phones without telling them the IMEI of your new phone, it won't show your new phone in the account page. But when you activated your iphone, you gave them your IMEI without knowing it.

this isn't accurate. I know when I first got my iphone, i put my old sim in it and all the phone and sms features worked just fine. when i logged into my att account PRIOR to activating the iphone, my profile clearly showed my current phone as the iphone. so ATT knows what phone you're using and that info can be updated without you doing it manually. just an FYI.

why do people who oppose the war in iraq forget the 20 yrs of terror inflicted on them by Hussein? i guess ethnic cleansing is preferable to liberation?

go stalin!

They say its a PUK unblocking code but when I switch phones it works fine.
No matter what sim from AT&T or even the go Phone I put into the iphone I still get "no service". Is there anyway that they locked the iphone itself via edge or sat?

But maybe that's just the honest person in me. ;)

sounds like u should have just got an iPod touch. I'm sick of people complaining about AT&T. They didn't force u to buy the iPhone and second, I think $20 for unlimited data is a hell of a deal. Is it really worth complaining over $20? I mean really. They also announced these plans before the phone even went on sell so people are well aware of this. You should do more research before u buy something so you won't gripe about it. Sell the phone and get an iPod touch and choose another service provider if u can't afford the $20 for unlimited internet

What some people fail to understand is that there are still people using old plans from pre-cingular days and that these plans can be better than what is offered today. For me, that has been the case - my family plan from the pre-cingular ATT is just what I want and need. To go with the iphone plan I would have to spend quite a bit more to get less of what I need (minutes). It just doesn't make sense and ATT doesn't seem inclined to give me a deal that matches what I have now.

Also, I don't want to sign up for a 2-year plan because I move around, am often abroad and hate paying for things I"m not using. Does that make sense?

BTW, I'm perfectly with my current situation. However, if ATT decided to disconnect my phone because it's unlocked I would immediately become unhappy and walk away. Oh, and I would have bought an ipod touch if Apple hadn't crippled its calendar and mail functions.

Just wondering, how long have you been with AT&T?
