I'd really be interested in finding out how much it COSTS networks like ATT for the bandwidth of their wireless data backbone and then compare it to the actual price per month they charge iPhone users. You know they make a killing off of texts but what about the actual iPhone data, how much % profit are they making?

Their net profit margins aren't that high. The wireless is just a growth business, especially the data and that pays for slower growing or money lossing business like residential phone service

AT&T this doesn't have to be that hard....

Something like $49.99 unlimited for iPhone and iPad per user.

You want new "subscribers"????? Give them a reason to buy!!!!!

The Wall Street Journal reports (subscription required) on comments made today by AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson at an investor conference in which he noted that he expects Apple's iPhone to be an important part of the carrier's offerings for "quite some time". Stephenson did not address, however, whether the company is expecting to lose its exclusivity for the iPhone in the U.S. in the near future.

Stephenson also noted that he is pleased with the progress AT&T has made on its network, particularly in New York City and San Francisco, where users have been troubled by poor performance. In addition to voice quality issues, which Stephenson noted should be greatly improved by mid-year, AT&T has also been working to increase data capacity, with the company now handling half of all wireless data traffic in the United States.

On the issue of LTE (4G) deployment, Stephenson reported that AT&T is "not in a tremendous hurry" to deploy the next-generation network, noting that the technology is still being developed and widespread availability of products taking advantage of the technology is not expected until 2012.

Lol, As long as they have it, I will not. And uhh . . who was supposed to care again? Guess iphone 4G won't be feelin' the silkiness of the insides of my pocket according to them either. Maybe iphone 5G? They're not in a hurry to build better networks? LOL WOW ! So somebody please tell me what it is they do besides rip people off. I REALLY hate to say this and never thought I would. I was holding out for Apple to do some things first. It seems they are not, so here I go . . Blackberry and decent pricing, here I come.

In an Arnold Schwarzenegger type voice: You"ll be back...:D

This wouldnt work for AT&T - why on earth would anyone sign up for anything but the cheapest plan knowing that they just pay the higher price if they go over?

That would be exactly the point. If AT&T priced it right, they wouldn't make any more or less money than they do now, and actually implementing such a reasonable and fair pricing structure would undoubtably attract customers away from other carriers using the current pricing structure.

Why shouldn't I be able to simply pay for what I actually use every month. What if I normally have almost constant WiFi access and then suddenly go on vacation and use 4GB of data. As much as I like my iPhone, I would switch to Verizon pretty quickly if they implemented a pricing structure like this. I wouldn't really mind having a minimum tier that you pay for even if you use nothing, but it's just silly being charged $100 for excess minutes/data/text when $5 or $10 will buy you the next tier up in service.

I thought Apple Fanboys were bad... but AT&T fanboys? You've got to be ****ing kidding me.

Next Gen as in 4G... not 3G. That is being handled rapidly.

Really...? 3G is being handled rapidly. Shouldn't that have happened like three ****ing years ago?

This sums it up perfectly... Cheers to segfaultdotorg. Of course it's followed by a douchey response.

That explains why I don't have 3G where I live. Guess they're not in a tremendous hurry to deploy the current-generation network, either.

Maybe you should just move to an important part of the country, ya know, a big city, with swimming pools, movie stars, that kind fo stuff. If' I lived in bumblefudge I wouldnt expect superior service.

Then this crap:

This will shut Verizon fanboys mouths for a while. Get it through your heads, Verizon and the iPhone do not mix!

Yeah, because with Verizon we might have better coverage, less dropped calls, and the ability to choose our carrier and plan. Yeah. That would suck.

AT&T sucks balls. Admit it. Why would you have allegiance to this ****** and sub-par wireless carrier? The only reason I am with them is because the iPhone is tied to them and I do happen to like the iPhone. AT&T can lick my satchel.

Ya, Right!

I for one am glad the iPhone is not on Verizon, I would be stuck with the same old clunker I had for 3 years.

I am very happy with the Droid, as I multitask, use my keyboard, get lots of free apps that work, etc, etc, etc.....:D

San Fransisco and NYC get ****** service on AT&T.. i guess those are rural areas though, right?

500MB per month: $25
Unlimited: $35

But here's the REASONABLE part... If I sign up for the 250MB plan but, in an odd month here or there, I go OVER 250MB, instead of then charging me some OUTRAGEOUS amount for each extra megabyte, kick me up to the 500MB for that month and only charge me $25. Likewise, if I go over 500MB, kick me up to Unlimited for $35.

You got that right. This thinking explains why many people don't own their own business. I see the "Just Say No" campaign needs to be reinstituted :D

he didn't say anything about it being exclusive to AT&T, simply that it would be an important part of AT&T.

Jeez, why do you hate Verizon so much? You realize that a large portion of this country would be without adequate wireless service if Verizon wasn't around. It is to the benefit of the average American if the iPhone were to come out on Verizon. Not only would it provide competition to AT&T, but more people would actually be able to use the thing.

Not to mention, I actually enjoy making phone calls without dropping them, which is apparently something that AT&T seems to have a problem coordinating.

Exactly. I was in Cuppertino, in the Apple parking lot in mid 2009. I couldn't make or take calls on a iPhone 3G. The phone was not defective, but ATT sure was cutting my calls. Ring-ring-silent hang up. In either direction...

I went blackberry thereafter, even though I loved my iPhone, because the ATT network was just lame.

And no ATT blessed tethering. That has to be the biggest joke of 2010.

That the best phone in the world, which has tethering _in its OS_ can't actually be tethered to anything that involves reusing the ATT data service in the United States of America (but can just about anywhere else).

I think of this like having a race car, say a Formula 1 Turbo BMW from the early 80's (think 1500bhp in qualifying), but having a walking path to drive it on... complete with pedestrians and their dogs stopping to poop in the path.

I'm sure Apple has a good business reason for staying with ATT at this point, but as a user, I don't see any sort of thing :)

There are entire regions of my state with no coverage, except along interstates and very major highways, merely major highways --- no service. In any area a person can generally pick at random on a un-colored map, I can either tether my BB in EVDO service, or pull out my verizon usb modem and enjoy EVDO bandwidth. ATT really is a joke in their coverage. And these are areas are not bumblefudge nowhere... they house major industrial power houses.

Oh you meant 3g? I would have been happy with merely having EDGE or GSM Voice!!!! Yes, there are areas with absolutely no ATT service, large swaths of such areas.

That's sad in 2010.

Shshhh. The fans don't want to hear this.

Which brings another point (not about the fans, but something I should have noted about the networks):

If you take minimum digital voice service into account, ie., not using a old analog phone --- the AMPS network is off --- Verizon has the nation nearly saturated, while ATT is at best giving mostly token interstate coverage towers in most states. Areas where verizon basic digital coverage is non-existant, generally does not have any ATT service either.

Good luck dialing the autoclub in bumblefudge nowhere, I guess cars only break down in metro areas and on interstates. Magic ATT gnomes keep your car/truck/equipment wheels rolling where the blessed ATT cell network dare not tread. Too bad these gnomes can't provide cell service!

Anyway, enough ATT bashing tonight. I am thankful to have any coverage at all... I would never have figured cell service would be as advanced as it is now. There is so much infighting among the players, over protocols, spectrum, phones, and such that I figured it would stagnate eventually. But now, companies like the big V are marching towards open networks, an amazing step for the wireless companies.

I look forward to the day I can build my own wireless device in my basement, and access a ubiquitous worldwide network wirelessly, just with a personal token of some sort, not having to have the phone blessed by a entity of any type.

But I thought we were getting the iPhoneLTE4G this summer? no? Well, if this is the case, then I am going to spend my allowance on something else if no iPhone is coming out. If anyone has any objects before I spend my iPhone savings on something else, speak now or forever hold your peace (ahem, Steve, did you have something to say?)

How come we haven't heard anything about iPad data plans for existing iPhone customers? If they kept their promise about tethering, my bill would be unaffected because I'd use my iPhone as a modem for the iPad.

Sounds like AT&T is trying to rip me off. Again. I'm already paying you for unlimited access to your (deficient) 3G network and I can't really use two devices at exactly the same time. Why shouldn't my iPhone payment be sufficient to cover my iPad data access?

This is what I am eventually hoping for.. I saw a Palm Pre commercial today where they touted it as being able to be used as a 5 device wireless router.

Ultimately I think AT&T will be forced into this, but instead of being a follower, I would prefer they be a leader. If they told me I could pay $10 more dollars a month ($40 a month total), to make my phone a 5 device router, I would be all over it.

I will not get a seperate 30 dollar plan for the iPad. So instead of getting 40 dollars from me they will get 30, for pretty much the same amount of data used.

Not rurall just sucky places to live.

Nice to visit, bad places to live.

I live in a place that is not so nice to visit but good to live.

People in SF and NY should try it sometime, it is much better to live in a place that is nice to live and visit a place that is nice to visit than vice-versa.

I for one support AT&T in their battle to drive people out of these bad to live places. Although it is going to make the place I live less nice to live.

On second thought...

 So AT&T is now recommending where people should live based on where they deploy coverage? Crazy times we live in.
