Written on my 3G ipad...

Why would anyone assume that 3G iPad users intended to maintain 3G data constantly? I bought the 3G iPad so that I could buy data when I need or want it. Normally that will be while I travel because I use my Droid X while I am running around in my home town.

I’d consider getting the 3G model and then not paying the monthly plan, just to have the GPS and compass for use with AR apps, and especially for driving directions from Navigon/etc. (GPS apps that don’t rely on the Internet to get their maps). I’m not 100% sure that would work, but I know Navigon on my iphone gets me around just fine even when I disable data on my iPhone. (Not in Airplane mode though—then the GPS is disabled.)

It works just fine. I used Copilot Live before enabling 3G on mine.

Of course by 500,000 they mean the 500,000 people who bought a 3G iPad and discovered they needed to register it with ATT just to use the GPS functions.

There aren't 500k subscribing members on the ATT network.

I call ******** on that number.

You only have to register with AT&T if you want to use a service that stores its maps online. Not all GPS apps require that.

I enabled 3G this month for a cruise to Alaska. I cancelled it when we got home and am now bringing my iPad to work to use the 3G at lunch until the month ends or I've used my 2GB.

Why lock your yourself in to AT&T (and to a single device)?

If I were to buy an iPad, I personally would go with a 3G model just to have the option. Can't say if I would use it though, especially not every month at $25/month. I have not much use for an iPad though, so I never bought one.

Why not save the $129.00 of the 3G model vs WiFi only model, and spend it on something like a Virgin Mobile MiFi which is only $20 more at $149.00? The trick with the Virgin Mobile MiFi is there is no contract, and it's only $40.00 for "unlimited" when you need 3G. In addition you can "hook" up to five devices at one time, including things like a notebook (e.g. An iPad, a MacBook, and an iPhone). I am not sure if "unlimited" is truly unlimited or Verzion "unlimited" of a 5GB limited. Either way, it worked great while I was traveling , via the Interstates from Pennsylvania to Florida, watching Netflix Instant stream while traveling at Highway speeds was cool (no DVDs, or stored movies required). :)

If I'd bought an iPad it would have been a 3G model because lack of 3G connectivity is the second biggest annoyance I have with my iPod touch.

However, I haven't bought an iPad because I realized something that big would stay home 99% of the time thus negating both the need for 3G and the need for the device entirely.

I wish I had sprung the extra $130 on a 3G model. Up here in Canadia I would have 4 different carriers (okay 3, but Fido is different...sorta) and it would have be awesome for trips to the states etc. A microsim and a few bucks later I could have web service instead of relying in crappy hotel wifi.

Am I the only one that opted to get the wifi version because I can tether my iPad to my phone for free?

iPad wifi - $500
iPad 3G - $630 + minimum of $15/month data

For $500 I have the same functionality (except assisted GPS), with no monthly fee.

3G as an option only

I am one of those people that bought their iPad with the 3G capability, and have never used the 3G and likely never will. Wish I hadn't spent the money to get 3G. WiFi is fine for me.

activations do not equal active users. there's no reason the believe the numbers aren't current.

I will bet you a large number of people who purchased the iPad are coming from the iPod Touch.
That doesn't sound right.

The demographics between the iPod touch and the iPad are considerably different. The iPod touch is heavily used by teen children and the 18-24 set. The iPad's demographics are skewed much higher to an older demographic (25-49), much like the iPhone. As a matter of fact, the average iPad owner has a self-reported income of $100,000.

While Apple does not break out sales figures for individual models nor countries, Steve did mention earlier this month that the iPod touch overtook the iPod nano as the number one selling iPod.

Basically, the iPad is being bought by the same parent who buys his/her kids iPod touches and himself/herself carries an iPhone (and probably a MacBook Pro). Something like 85% of Mac households also have a Windows PC.

The iPad is an additional purchase, not something that is replacing an existing device.

Not on AT&T

Maybe this means that for everyone that activates an iPad 3g on AT&T one person deactivates their iPad on AT&T.

I know that at the current time I will just purchase an iPad WiFi & tether it to my Sprint smart phone. It can be done month to month also. Some added benefits are 4g in Chicago & Kansas City & some other cities that I go to plus the thing that I can use my iPod Touch or my 17" Intel MacBook Pro on this same tethering system. 4g time is not counted against any told time/data transfers.

I'm gad AT&T raised their rates on the iPad using that old bait & switch of only having to pay for the months that you want but making those that started out with unlimited time have to pay for every month to keep that historic feature.

No more AT&T connections

Very cool! Though I am surprised the number of iPads with 3G is so low. You'd think that the whole concept is that they are useful no matter where you go? And that might not include wi-fi?

AT&T chased me away from purchasing an iPad with 3g with their bait & switch pricing policy. I'll just get a lower priced WiFi model & tether it to my Sprint phone during those months that I need it.

This may be what happened to the iPad with 3g.

???? You change the data plan AND you offer no subsidized price. People will choose the cheaper iPad. Initial and total cost is all cheaper. I wonder what most people will choose...

"some customers may simply be finding that they do not take their iPads out of the home as often as they had originally thought"

Because they are too big and heavy. Cue the 7" iPad.

I Jest I Jest :p:D

Or maybe a Motorola or HTC EVO model for a larger screen & a choice other than AT&T.

let me tell you something,if the all you can eat for $14.99 data plan was still in play at att them new ipad user would be tearing up att's network. We all know that 2 gig ain't sh**! And for $25.00 a month? Att must be smoking crack.

God I hate it when people give the "", when they just don't get it themselves. Subsidized products are for when you are tied into a contract (thus they know they can make the money back). The iPad does not require a contract and is unlocked. I'll give it right back to you:

I bought my Dad the 64 GB iPad 3G for Father's day. I activated it at my home while loading it up with apps for his use. Then when I got to his place I found that AT&T only had EDGE where he lives, so I promptly disabled the AT&T service.

Which is to say, whether the user actually activates and continues to use AT&T is no measure of iPad sales.

Thankfully, a Verizon MiFi works great with the iPad. I just wish I hadn't bothered with the iPad 3G version in this case, since it bites on EDGE and so WiFi over the MiFi would have worked best and saved a little money.

I purchased 3G service Once, then Twice only to realize I hardly used it at all. WiFi is so readily available 3G barely made sense for me.

Update 2: We've now heard from an AT&T representative that Stephenson was in fact simply repeating the number from the 2Q 2010 earnings release discussion, rounding the figure up to the higher end of the original range.
Sounds like a CEO.

I struggle to understand the hype surrounding the ipad, why would i want a crippled notebook?

I bought the 3G model knowing I would not use itnthat often but would need it on occasion for biz travel or vacation... to me the addt'l $129 was worth the times when I would need it. Had it since the beginning and have had 2 months of service (not in a row).

I also bought it because I wanted better resell value.

Hey Att,
How about bringing back the 30 dollar month unlimited plan for iPad so I can buy like 5 more 3g ipads.

I really hope verizon gives an unlimited plan whenever they get the iPad.

Why would it matter where he lives? He has no wi-fi at his house?
